India's southwest monsoon is approaching, with the India Meteorological Department predicting it will set in over Kerala around June 4th, marking the official start of the rainy season. However, before the monsoon fully arrives, large parts of the country are experiencing increasingly erratic weather patterns, including thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds reaching 70 km/h, dust storms in Rajasthan, and persistent heavy rainfall in the northeast. Mumbai has been placed under a yellow alert for thunderstorms and squally winds, with pre-monsoon showers causing waterlogging in low-lying areas like the Andheri Subway. This demonstrates how India's monsoon transition period brings complex and unpredictable weather conditions across different regions.

Indian Monsoon: India Faces Erratic Weather Shift As Northeast Prepares For Heavy RainfallAdded:
India's weather map is turning increasingly unpredictable as the southwest monsoon approaches the mainland. According to the India Meteorological Department, it is likely to set in over Kerala around 4th of June, officially marking the start of the rainy season. But before the monsoon fully arrives, large parts of the country are expected to see turbulent weather. Delhi and neighboring states, they are forecast to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds through the week with wind speeds potentially touching 70 km per hour in some areas. Rajasthan faces the added threat of isolated dust storms. Further east and across central India, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, they are likely to witness thunderstorms and strong winds with severe thunder squalls forecast in some locations as well. The northeast, well, this region is likely to remain under persistent rain with heavy downpours forecast in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. Light snowfall was reported in parts of Bandipora in Jammu and Kashmir as the country is witnessing a striking mix of weather extremes. The shifting weather pattern is now moving towards western India as well.
Thunderstorms and scattered rain, they are expected across Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and large parts of Maharashtra as monsoon conditions could strengthen over the Arabian Sea.
And nowhere is that transition being watched more closely than Mumbai, the financial capital. It has been placed under a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds, while several districts across Maharashtra they remain under higher level warnings.
As the monsoon edges closer, Mumbai could soon become the next major city to feel the full force of India's increasingly erratic weather season.
And there's more on this from our principal correspondent Disha Shah, who sent us this report from Mumbai.
>> [music] >> India's financial capital city Mumbai woke up to heavy pre-monsoon showers bringing much-needed relief that the city needed for a very long time. In fact, IMD has predicted yellow alert for today as well as tomorrow for Mumbai and its adjoining areas like Thane district as well. As on today on Wednesday morning, little bit of disruptions were uh reported across the city specifically with the waterlogging reported in few of the low-lying areas including the very famous Andheri Subway which is used for east to west uh travel uh through the city. Uh it was temporarily shut for half an hour due to the waterlogging uh which later was resolved. Uh authorities are now on alert. In fact, they have uh advised people specially to travel uh with caution in low-lying areas as the pre-monsoon showers have set in and uh and this is expected to continue till June 6th and after that uh we can expect a full-fledged monsoon to hit the city of Mumbai as per IMD.
