Precipitable water (PWs) is a meteorological measurement that quantifies the total amount of moisture in the atmosphere by imagining an invisible cylinder from the ground to about 10,000 feet and measuring how much water vapor nature can extract; when PWs values exceed 2 inches, it indicates significant atmospheric moisture that, combined with favorable weather patterns like high pressure moving to the southeast and tropical southwest flow, creates conditions for heavy rainfall that can help break drought conditions.

Weather Word of the DayAdded:
So, how do we break out of this drought?
It's all in the PWs. Yeah, that's the big water cooler word of the day, PWs, precipitable water. So, meteorologists love numbers. So, think of an invisible cylinder from the ground to about 10,000 ft. And really, we can measure how much moisture nature can squeeze out in the atmosphere. And when you start to see these numbers come up over 2 in Thursday, Friday, all the way through the weekend and next week, that is a lot of moisture that can be wrung out in the atmosphere. And with the front nearby, yes, conditions are looking favorable finally for at least putting a big dent into this drought. High pressure moves to the southeast, nice tropical southwest flow. This is what's been missing. And you can see the deep green.
That's where you have all that heavy rain. Latest rainfall amounts coming in on the Euro, we've got the purples, we've got the reds, we've got 2, 3, 4 in or more of rain on the way. So, keep checking back with us. In fact, on that 10-day forecast, we'll keep those high rain chances going starting late week, this weekend, into next week.
