Severe weather forecasting involves analyzing atmospheric conditions to predict thunderstorm development, rainfall intensity, and potential flooding risks across specific regions. Meteorologists use risk categories (slight, marginal, general chance) to communicate severe weather potential, while satellite imagery helps identify training thunderstorms that can produce 2-3 inches of rain per hour in areas like Louisiana, Mississippi, and surrounding states.

May 23-24, 2026: Severe Weather & Stormy SouthAdded:
This is Kate Weatherwise with a weather update for the South concerning the slight chance for severe weather today where you could see training thunderstorms, some severe weather, and just lots of rain that could add up to flooding. Let's get right into it. The Storm Prediction Center has there in yellow a slight risk for severe weather today with the darker greens a marginal risk and then light greens that's a general chance for thunderstorms throughout today. As we see here on this map, you see these areas highlighted.
We're going to go to West Texas first where you already see some thunderstorms beginning to pop up. Some of them strong in southwestern Texas. That yellow oblong box is in the panhandle of Texas for the most part. Your thunderstorms are expected to start later today. Down near the Houston area, you have some heavy rain with strong thunderstorms as well moving through. They're not moving very much so that could cause some flooding. And then we go to New Orleans and central and northern Louisiana into Mississippi where you have lots of rain and some instances 2 to 3 in per hour where that will continue for most of the afternoon today. That area right there in the middle, those are some strong to severe thunderstorms that are moving to the northeast and that will affect, like I said, the area in the afternoon hours.
Moving further east, you see another convective discussion over into central Georgia around the Atlanta area where you have numerous thunderstorms popping up. That will create some rain, some frequent lightning, and some small to medium-size hail. Those will be going on throughout the afternoon today, too. You can say the same for South Carolina as well. Today is just going to be a pretty active day for thunderstorms, some of them severe, and lots and lots of rain.
Taking a look at the current satellite imagery, we see lots of bright white clouds here with rain and thunderstorms underneath. Those thunderstorms and rain are not moving very quickly. They are sort of standing still, moving around, just meandering around. There's not a whole lot of direction for them because this is just a trough that's interacting with the moisture and the Gulf of America. So, there's not a lot of direction for these and why we're seeing that training of thunderstorms over areas that will continue to drop two to three inches of rain per hour in some locations in Mississippi and Louisiana today.
Heading east and north, those same situations are going on with that low pressure system to the north heading into Canada, draping behind it a cold front. That's helping to enhance some activity in those areas as well. Of course, if you would like to stay on top of weather and forecast for all across the nation, go to my page, like and subscribe. For now, this is Kate Weatherwise, always looking up.
