[00:00:00]The dry frozen desert we called Mars wasn't always like that.

[00:00:05]Around 4 billion years ago Mars had a thicker atmosphere a warmer climate and liquid water flowing across its surface.

[00:00:15]Rivers carved valleys, lakes filled craters and in the northern lowlands there may have been an ocean.

[00:00:23]In early 2025, China's Zhurong rover found underground beach deposits. These are ancient coastal sediments buried beneath the Martian surface adding some of the strongest evidence yet for that ancient ocean. We're not completely certain. The ocean hypothesis is still debated but multiple spacecraft, multiple rovers and multiple independent lines of evidence all point the same way.

[00:00:52]So, what happened? Well, Mars lost its magnetic field which meant solar wind gradually stripped away its atmosphere.

[00:01:01]And without that blanket, the water evaporated or froze.

[00:01:06]So, Mars didn't fail to become Earth. It became Earth and then lost it.

[00:01:13]A warm, wet, potentially habitable world slowly undone over billions of years.
