Hello everyone and welcome back to our channel. If you're new around here, my name is Lucy and this is my wonderful husband.
>> Hello, my name is Lu.
>> We are living in the south of Sri Lanka, spending our days looking after many animals, running our homeay business, and creating these videos you see here on YouTube.
I'm originally from the UK from a county in the southwest of England called Somerset, but came to Sri Lanka for a 1-month holiday and never left. 6 years later, and here we are today. In this episode, we're going to be sharing with you a typical day in the life. How we're getting through our days in this intense heat and humidity as Sri Lanka rolls into its hottest time of year. We're glad you could be here with us. So sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy this episode.
Free flowing, sailing with the wind.
Not knowing how this story ends.
Kind and brave, I know you'll find a way.
Live your truth and good will come to you.
Home sweet home.
Home sweet home.
Hey Don't take all of our mangoes.
>> You going to climb it?
>> Oh, you've got a hole in your trousers.
>> We won't zoom in on that.
>> Oh my gosh, it's huge. Pooie, what's that? No, don't eat the papaya.
>> Good morning everyone. In the morning, I start to papaya harvest our own papaya.
Day start today.
>> It is a very very very hot day just like every day. Now we are in the hottest time. It's actually come forward a month. The seasons are changing. We're finding we've not had rain in a very very long time. Usually the hottest time is April and May, but we're seeing this year that it's come forward in March.
It's insanely hot. There's weather warnings out. I think the schools are some schools are closed in some regions of Sri Lanka. We've not had rain in a very, very long time. So, there is drought also in some parts of the country. We're also affected. I mean, we're trying to keep our plants alive as much as possible, but we're also struggling with um water harvest from the well because we're not getting as much as we were when there was rain. Uh so, yeah, it's a bit of a struggle.
We're making do, but our garden is still thriving like these papayas and also loads of bananas. We have got so many banana trees and recently they've all been ready to harvest. It's amazing.
We've had four bunches of bananas >> together or alone.
Build your home.
You are your home.
Home sweet home.
Home sweet.
>> We've got mango, papaya, and harvested three bunches of bananas today. That is insane. You can tell you've been busy today in the jungle, Ru.
Yeah. Also, lots of papayas. Papayas have been a consistent for the last few months. It's incredible. And also, mango season is coming. Uh, all of our mango trees, the old ones and also new ones that we planted four years ago, are all in fruit. It's incredible. So, hopefully in the next couple months, we're going to have loads of mangoes. So, it seems that these kind of fruit trees are not affected by the lack of rain.
Oh.
Do more exploring deeper than knowing just what is essential for life that is thriving.
Go deep.
Mute out the ch. So I've just refilled the freezer with our bananas and papaya.
all have been harvested from our own land, so it's homegrown and organic. So, the freezer is now full. We always do smoothie bowls for our guests. And also, I have smoothie bowl every day. I make it into an ice cream, which is what I've done today because it's so hot at lunchtime when I'm hungry. I get to have a lovely healthy ice cream or an ice cream. So, yeah, freezer is full. And also, we always collect the papaya seeds because we sprinkle them around the land and just try to grow as many papaya trees as possible cuz we want to be as self-sufficient as possible. And then, of course, all the leftover peelings, the papaya skin and the banana peels, we then give to the most beautiful cow in Sri Lanka, Sunshine, because she loves all the compostable things, all of our scraps. She loves it. and she loves the fruit scraps because she gets a sweet treat and she's very happy about it. And yeah, it's just wonderful to have a cow that we can be giving all these lovely, lovely fruits and vegetables to. It's just one of those days where we're getting loads of jobs done, doing a spot for cleaning and doing our bed, changing the sheets, all that kind of good stuff that you do on a day in the life video. So yeah, just put another wash on. Super grateful for water and for our washing machine because these kind of things we do not take for granted. Water especially is something we've been suffering a lot with. Luckily for us, we still do have water, but it's been a bit tricky to navigate and make sure we're managing it all correctly because we're now pumping from our well. And then the other day the washing machine decided to break and we had a load of laundry that needed doing. We had a huge pile up because of set water situation. So the washing machine then kind of stopped working. We had to pull it all out. Look at all the tubes, the inlet pipes, the filters, all that kind of stuff. And yeah, we just had to do a bit of a clean on that. And then we got it working again. And so I'm so so grateful for these basic things that we have in life. I really feel these kind of things we just don't think about generally. We don't think about water or electricity or any of that kind of stuff until you don't have it and then you're like, "Ah, Yeah, we need this stuff." So anyway, now it is the hottest part of the day. Going to try to not be outside if I can help it and just be on the inside. We've got the fans on. The dogs are all chilling here on the nice cool concrete floor. And I think I'm going to jump on the laptop whilst waiting for the washing machine and get some editing and admin stuff done. Feel it burn off the fire.
Let go until there's peace to your core.
So yeah, whenever we're using the washing machine, we always catch the water that is draining. We catch it in lots of different buckets and then we have a kind of system in place. We have a bigger bucket on the outside of our bathroom window that we then pour all of the water into. So we can pretty much collect all of the water that's coming out of our washing machine and then we use that for things like dog blankets, cleaning our floors, and also watering the plants. So sometimes the same water can have two or three different uses for different things. So yeah, that's what we've been doing to try and stay as frugal as possible with our water consumption. We're just trying to conserve as much water as possible basically because we know how sacred water is at this time of year. And yeah, it might seem like a lot right now, but actually when you get into the routine of it, it just becomes normal. So, it's very normal for us to be collecting all of our washing machine water at this point. I don't know if we'll ever go back to allowing the washing machine water to go down the drain and not actually reuse the water. It's kind of fun. Live a life you adore.
Silence the noise away from the program.
>> It is lunchtime. And of course for lunch today, just like pretty much every day, I have a smoothie bowl, but actually it's like a smoothie ice cream because I put it in the freezer. It's been in there since this morning. And I've topped it with our homemade granola, also some lovely cranberries, and also some papaya from our garden sprinkled with chia seeds. Absolutely delicious. I look forward to this every single day.
This is like the highlight of my day. So really looking forward to talking into this guacy.
Moving performance to self all that's standing.
Live free from worry.
Live by just being power and finding your wholeness. And now the church feel it. It looks like you're fishing for line.
>> You got it. Oh, it's stuck on the branch, I think.
>> Okay, so R just popped out for quite a while. He had to go to Wiggama to get some electric supplies. We're actually also at the same time as all of our other projects, we've also started another project, of course, and that is Chili House upgrades. So, that will be a video coming at some point in the near future. But he's come back and he's harvested some of our lemons, limes from our tree, uh, which are amazing and super delicious. And he's made me the most beautiful lemon juice. Perfect for this hot hot weather. It's nice and cold. It's got fresh ice. Oh, you look like a professional barman.
Woohoo.
And yeah, this is just the perfect way to cool off when it's super super hot outside.
Perfect. Cheers everyone. Okay, so the last job of the day is >> here. She's here. Oh my goodness. Delia is the last job of the day. Uh she is one of our rescue dogs. Of course, all of our animals are rescue. Uh she's a super super fluffy one. She came to Animal SOS as a tiny tiny disabled puppy, like fully disabled, but then we basically got her to run before she could walk. She's been like a crab ever since. She literally runs like a crab and she's kind of like one-sided. So, whenever she lies down or sits down, she's always lying on one side. So, that means that one side of her always gets quite matted and she's super super fluffy and it's very, very, very hot at the moment. So, plan is to give her a little bit of a haircut today. She's probably going to look pretty awful after it, but I think she's going to feel much, much better and a lot of relief that she doesn't have so much fluff in such a hot climate. Plus, the fact that we don't have air con, we only have the fans. I think she's struggling a little bit at the moment. So, I'm going to go change my clothes and then we can get to shaving.
Okay, Galia, are you ready?
Are you ready, girly? I hope I don't make this look really bad.
