The video provides a clear and necessary correction to the common misunderstanding of PEMDAS priority, specifically the left-to-right rule for multiplication and division. While the clickbait title is a bit dramatic, the step-by-step explanation effectively simplifies a fundamental concept that many students still struggle with.

Hello great minds. Let's solve couple of these type of questions without a calculator. Okay. Now we have 9 + 12ide by 3 in parentheses 1 + 1. Okay. Now many people made mistakes in solving this particular question because this is what they did. Okay. They first of all attended to the parentheses which is the right thing to do but along the line they got confused. Okay. So they had um 9 + 12 / 3 * parenthesis is 1 + 1 and that is two. Okay. Now this is where they made a mistake. Okay. Because they thought that um multiplication is of higher priority. So they multiply first.
So they had 9 + 12ide by 3 * 2 is 6. Okay. Now they now divided this. Okay. So from here they had 9 + 12 / 6 will give us 2 and 9 + 2 = 11. Okay, a lot of people say that this is the right solution to this but I said no because according to the order of operation which is permas P E M D A S. Okay, without this you can you will definitely get the wrong answer. Okay, so this is parenthesis, this is exponent, this is multiplication, this is division, this is addition and this is subtraction. And this multiplication and division are of the same priority.
That is to say that whenever you encounter both of them in a particular question, you have to solve it from the left to the right. Okay. And this is where the a lot of people made mistake.
Okay. Now the same thing is applicable to this addition and subtraction. Okay.
Now let's solve this particular question using the order of operation which is the right thing to do. Okay. So the first thing we are going to attend to is um parentheses. We do not have um exponents. We do not have multiplication yet but definitely we are going to. So there is division, there is addition but there is no subtraction. Okay. So let's first of all attend to the parenthesis.
So we are going to have 9 + 12 / 3 * the parenthesis is 1 + 1 and that is 2.
Okay. So this is where the problem is because some people thought that this is this multiplication is of higher priority not knowing that both of them are the same priority. So you are going to solve from the left to the right.
Okay. So we have 9 + 12 / 3 will give us 4. Okay. So we have 4 * 2 here. Now from here we multiply because multiplication is of higher priority to addition. So we have 9 + 4 * 2 = 8. Okay. So 4 + 9 + 8 gives us 17.
So the right answer is 17 not um not 11.
Okay. Now let's solve this particular question again because some people made mistake on this particular one. Now this is what they did. What they did was to write 4 + 6 / 3 * 1 + 1 here is 2. Okay.
Now in this particular expression they multiplied because they thought that multiplication is of higher priority to division. So they wrote 3 4 + 6 / 3 * 2 is 6. Okay, they now divided. So 4 + 6 / 6 = 1 and 4 + 1 = 5. Okay, and this is totally wrong. The answer is not four.
Um, it's not five. Sorry, because according to the order of operation which is PM dash P E M D A S. Okay, there is always need for us to write out this. Okay. So that we don't make mistake. This is parentheses. This is exponent, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.
Okay. And always remember that these two are of the same priority and these two are the same of the same priority. Okay.
Now let's attend to the parenthesis first because we have parentheses here.
We have division, we have addition.
Okay. no subtraction, no exponent and no multiplication. Okay. So from here let's attend to the parentheses first. So we have four + 6 / 3 * 1 + 1 is 2. Okay.
Now from here you can see that we have multiplication now. Okay. And multiplication is of the same priority to division. So we are going to solve from the left to the right. Okay. So we have four plus 3 divide 6 / by 3 will give us 2 and we have 2 * 2. Okay. Now some people added before they multiply and that is wrong because multiplication is of higher priority to addition. Okay.
So we have 4 + 2 * 2 is 4 and 4 + 4 = 8.
So the right answer is eight not um not four. Okay, not five I mean to say.
Okay, now from here we have 32 / 8 + 2 exponent 3 * 2. Okay, now let's solve this. For us to solve this, the first thing we are going to do is to write down the PM dash. Okay, the order of operation which is PM dash D M sorry M first. Okay, this is M D A S. Okay. Now where this is parentheses, this is exponent, this is multiplication and this division. This is addition and this one is subtraction. And always remember that this is of the same priority. We have to solve from the left to the right. Okay. And these two are of the same priority as well. So same thing is applicable here. Okay. Now for us to solve this looking at this you can see that we don't have parentheses but we have exponent we have multiplication we have division we have addition but no subtraction okay so we'll go first to exponent we have 32ide by 8 plus now 2 exponent 3 simply means 2 * 2 * 2 okay 2 in three places so 2 * 2 is 4 4 * 2 is 8 okay So we have 8 here as 2 exponent 3 * 2. Okay. Now from here we have division and we have multiplication and addition. And between these three division and multiplication of the higher priority to addition and these two are the same priority. So we have to solve from the left to the right. So from here we have 32 / 8 and that is 4 + 8 * 2. Okay. So let's multiply first. 8 * 2 = 16. So we have 4 + 16 and 4 + 16 = 20. Okay, some people got 16 as their answer, but the right answer is 20. Thank you so much for watching to the end. Please do well to subscribe and share this video. Bye.
