Pond odors, particularly the rotten egg smell, are primarily caused by hydrogen sulfide gas released during the decomposition of organic matter (muck and sludge) in stagnant, unaerated water; the solution involves proper pond aeration to prevent stagnation and the use of beneficial bacteria to break down organic matter and eliminate odors.

Why Your Pond Smells BadHinzugefügt:
Hi, Mark here from pondalgae solutions.com with today's pond Q&A of the day.
Why does my pond smell so bad?
If you've been around ponds much at all, you will no doubt have experienced some very stinky odors coming off some of these water bodies. What you're usually smelling, there's a lot of causes for this, but by far the most common thing is you are smelling hydrogen sulfide.
This will have a sulfurous rotten egg smell coming off and a lot of times when you experience this, it will be in a pond that is unaerated.
It is stagnant and the pond is off-gassing from decomposition of muck and sludge down at the bottom and this stuff is just working its way out. If you're having problems with this kind of thing and it gets to the point that you really want to put an end to it, the best ways are twofold. We would normally aerate the pond if it's not aerated already. If you do have aeration and you're getting some of these types of odors, you want to think about maybe trying some supplemental beneficial bacteria. One example would be like our biosorb pro product works great for this and you basically get this stuff going and it will help with those odors along with the aeration it usually puts an end to it and allows the pond to off-gas properly and easily and you don't get the stagnation and this build-up of gases which ultimately make being around a pond kind of unpleasant. So, hope that information helps for you. Thanks as always for the questions and if you have any comments or thoughts on this, you can put your comments below this video.
