This documentary poignantly exposes how colonial religious conversion functioned as a form of cultural erasure, demanding the systematic destruction of indigenous social structures. It serves as a sobering reminder that the price of "civilization" was often the tragic loss of one's own identity and heritage.

120 Years Later, TUTHU Is Still PAYING The UNTOLD Price For Welcoming COLONIALISTS |Karuri Wa GakureAdded:
I'm all out here alone somewhere up overlooking the beautiful to village the home to the first consolata Catholic mission in East Africa. But before I take you down there to the oldest church tell me how many mansions you can count.
So this beautiful village to is part of the larger ratia area which is home to probably 60% of all the billionaires you know in Kenya and by billionaires I mean the old sh boys you know the owners of the most top tier banks you know in the country the likes of the founder and the current CEO of equity bank the board chair of Britam the likes of Jim Naru the list is endless They come from this village.
But there's something more cooler down there. If you take a good look, you can see to the Catholic Church.
The place is a bit windy. I'm sure you can hear that.
I'll be taking you down there in a few minutes. I go by the name Mr. Lone Traveler. I'm all alone.
Just a man and his beautiful engine.
So I want you to keenly follow this story as it will give you the whole context of how the Catholic church became to be in this country. Starting from this very village we are going downhill. This is the famous no more road. It's all concrete.
No tarmac here. So you got to be slow and careful.
So the story begin in the year 1850.
A restless sh boy is born from this part of the world.
I told you this village is home to sh boys and now this is their father.
Listen.
So the boy name is Kari Wagakur and from a young age he feels he want to be different from his peers. So instead of engaging the normal socioeconomic activities you know adding cows farming he goes to the neighboring abadas forest hand down elephants kill them take their tasks and sell them to Arab traders in Machakos or a sharp boy.
You can see him in this photo wearing some expensive, elegant Arab clothes when everybody in his village was on a good skin.
So he's a super rich man and remember this is in the 1800s.
So to cut the long story short, the guy visits home in Duri near Nairobi and he's fascinated to see Wyaki's guest white men. He had never seen this in his lifetime.
You know, blue eyes, long hair, they have this fancy language and being a sh boy he was is one opportunity.
He told the white boys, you just want to spread your religion.
I'm your plug here. I got all you need.
I'm taking you back to my village in Tuzo.
And that's how the Catholic missionaries found themselves here in 1802.
There's a very beautiful river here.
River Madya.
Come from the nearby Abadas and goes all the way to the Indian Ocean.
Super clean and cold.
What a beautiful village.
Hey buddy.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
>> Just being nice. He just offered that guy a lift.
He is hooking perfumes. Can you imagine?
What a hardworking hustler.
So when these white boys landed in town, they had their first stop over right here, Tudu Memorial Chapel. On 29th June 1902, the first consola missionaries, Fathers Tay and Falo Tay, a bad name, Bishop Kuso Alfalda, invited by Chief Kori Wagur, started their mission by celebrating first mass at this place. The beginning of the Catholic Church for great part of Kenya.
Wow.
So, let me show you something right here.
So, do you see that round building right in the middle? It is symbolic. It symbolizes a tree stump. I'll come back to it.
What a beautiful garden.
So back then there was a muguma tree right where the building stands.
And guess what? They held their first Catholic mass under that tree. You know back then Kikuyus used to take all their religious activities under that tree.
And so later on when they decided to cut down the tree and build that church, they had to build it in that shape to symbolize the stamp of the cut muma tree.
What an insult to the traditionalist villagers.
Of course, that had some consequences.
Someone had to pay the heavy price.
I'll show you how the new church paid for that painfully years later.
So to the shopping center is somewhere up there. I'll be taking you there later on.
But I want to first show you something else in that direction.
By the town is the tiniest I've ever seen. Just so you can see.
The road is a bit rough and shaky.
So this is the old church. It is still functioning until now. So the place I just showed you now serves as a memorial.
Let's take a look at the old touch.
It seems like the church is still serving as a school 124 years later.
This foundation stone has been laid.
down by this load, bishop of this day, the 20th June 1968, the year uh the year of the faith.
Where are you? 1968.
This place is super historic.
>> Hello the beautiful babies.
>> So this thing was erected in 2013 to commemorate 111 years of faith.
Some nice artwork here symbolizing a goat being sacrificed and a mugum tree the traditional way.
No one is in here.
The church feels so peaceful and beautiful.
I don't know whether you can see anything. The light is not on my side.
Beautiful mirrors.
So before this church was built in 1968, there was another structure here.
The original church, it was brought down by the mouth during the insurgency in the 1950s.
But this one still looks old, right?
It is around 58 years. Can you imagine?
Two years shy to 60.
So these are the pictures of the founding fathers, the guys that came here in 1902.
What a brave team.
Looks like a nice chill spot.
A beautiful artwork showing the Kiku's traditional way of life.
There's something very interesting here that looks like a manger. It symbolizes where Jesus was born.
Mama Maria.
Well, it loo translate to Hail Mother Mary, pray for us.
What a prayer. And speaking of mothers, happy Mother's Day to all women watching Mr. Lone Traveler from everywhere across the globe. I'm sure this video will be posted on 10th May, the Mother's Day.
So, I'll be hitting the small town of Tudo in a few. It's about 20 m from here. But let me first show you something.
Told you today I'll be doing lots of walking.
So this is the village tea collection center.
No one is here. I wonder why they have numbered spaces on the wall.
Probably this is the chief office or the police station. Who knows?
Let's head out to the town.
So, check out that woman carrying a baby on top of a ridge. I'll tell you something about her later in the video.
She's a Syria.
Now, with all the fame and the history, this is the famous town of Tudo.
I want to get to the town center and see what's up. We want to see how businesses are fairing here. I will also be giving you the numbers.
Damn it. I'm cooked.
The wheels are just kidding.
Seems like the car would go beyond this point.
Oops. It feels impossible.
I think I need some leg muscles.
There's a very big trench behind me on my left.
I think I need some exercise equipment from Tik Kani so that I can build my leg muscles.
God.
This video is proudly sponsored by TZ Jani, the trusted suppliers of super quality homefriendly exercise equipment.
They come in different packages designed for people with small home spaces.

A two- wheeled roller and a hand grip.
Just call or WhatsApp the number on the screen for the air. You can dry.
So this is the tiny town. No roads, but it is quite beautiful, I must say. It's an old town.
I want to show you something interesting about this town.
So, it's a town of 1,515 people with some 490 households, a very tiny village.
So, you can see the town is passely designed. It is built on a hill. So, there's no space. Every building is on its own.
That's a cake bar.
And it seems like today we'll have a party in this beautiful town.
There's another barrel coming.
Okay, I think it's time to go.
So, I'm sure you're wondering what happens to me when I encountered a problem getting into the town.
So, that lady carrying a baby, you'll be able to see her in a few seconds.
So, a struggling lonely man, she didn't even talk to me.
She just called this guy. I'm told he's the baddest driver in town.
In fact, he just told me that he drive the area school bus.
An oldtime, not a car babysitter.
So, the good lady told the guy, "Why don't you come and help this poor man?"
And that's how I got out of that place.
Of course, I had to buy some hot tea to the driver.
You don't take good-hearted people for granted.
Can you see the good lady up there?
These people are so good.
This is a super hill town.
You got to be careful.
Seems like only few cars come this way.
Thank you.
Of course, I had to thank the good-hearted lady because why not?
I'm still having a good time in the land of the first missionaries, the land of the famous Karakur.
Did I tell you that after hosting and giving the missionary land to settle, Karakur harvested heavily?
For most, he was made the paramount chief of the area.
The beautiful village still looks old and historic.
Probably Chief Karakur left it this way.
Nothing much has changed the road.
The population remember it is still low and there is still standing majestically in the background. But probably what has changed is the large scale growing of tea and of course new buildings.
But something major happened on these very streets on January 14th, 1916.
Tell you what, all this time since 1902, the good chief has never converted to Christianity told you he was a sharp boy.
He was just enjoying the spoils that come with real power and having highend friends. In fact, my Google map tells me he is buried somewhere here on my left.
Of course, you know what comes first to the head of a powerful, rich African man.
women. So by 1916, Karoli had a total of 60 wives. Go twice. You don't want to count the concubines, do you?
So he got very sick and he felt like now it is time to seek the kingdom of heaven. A brother got to be baptized.
But there was a catch.
He was told to do that. You have to renounce all your eyes and remain with one. Hold that thought.
So I had to ask the brother to take some few photos of me so that I can live to remember the beautiful village of Tudo.
So Kari had to denounce more than 59 women, wives and kids and declare that he only had one wife. That is according to the Christian customs. So remember this is an old guy and most of these women had kids and grandkids.
What a heavy price. the guy had to pay to be baptized.
So this picture was taken that day. He was baptized Joseph and his first wife was baptized consolata and he was taken around this village on this car which was owned by an Italian farmer nearby.
That was my time. I go by the name Mr. alone traveler and as I tell you every village has a story. That was a beautiful story of to the village in Manga County, Central Kenya. Make sure to subscribe, like the video and tell us what do you think about the price that Karakura had to pay to get Christianity.
Until we meet in our next town or village, good gracious.
