Dog ~ 2 Maine Coon Cats ~ New England Meteorologist ~ Overwhelmed By Baby Squirrels ~ Wx ForecastAdded:
Today's episode is [music] called Steve and the Baby Squirrels featuring our favorite T-Rex triple hopper and Mitt may be making an appearance. So, let's start with the triple hop as we do every day. That's two. And then that's three.
And then that's out the door. Scare away the baby [music] squirrels that could have been under the feeder.
And then he goes out there and looks for baby squirrels. And he's going to get tangled. And Mitt jumps out the door. Oh boy, this is going to be challenging.
keeping track of the cats. At 8:50 [music] a.m. on Wednesday, May 6th, 62° outdoors, 63 indoors. Once again, we're just barely uh warmer indoors [music] than out.
And free the cat and look for baby squirrels over here. They're not there, which is good because I don't need to.
Yeah, there it is right there. There's one of the baby squirrels.
We're going to see a lot more of these guys here in a couple minutes. First though, we're going to do the weather.
Hopefully, no cats are getting squirrels right this minute. We've got a mixture of sun and clouds. These are all levels of the atmosphere cloud. We've got some alto stratus. We get some alto cumulus.
And off to the west we have nimbo stratus and that means it's raining. And there was a good amount of rain in northern New England yesterday. Let's start with some verification on what happened yesterday. It looks like the jackpot for rainfall in New England as of 7 a.m. today. 24-hour rainfall total.
Most of that was late in the day and last night 7 in and counting in Jeffersonville, Vermont. And then it went across New Hampshire and Northern Maine, parts of Northern Maine. Also picked up uh close to a half to 7/10en of an inch of rain. So I think just about everyone in New England would welcome some rain at this point of the growing season and uh the fire season, too. And there were some damage reports yesterday. Not many scattered uh strong thunderstorms with a little damage reported in New York and also Whitefield, New Hampshire. Some trees were knocked down by a thunderstorm. So, it it's definitely a situation where it could have been worse based on some of the forecasts we were presented. All right. And uh the big news is the snow in Fall River this morning. Look at that. Close to 20 inches of snow in Fall River National Park, Colorado.
Yeah, there's a snowstorm going on in Colorado. So, it was one of the things I was obsessed looking at this morning, waiting for the sun to come up there in Colorado. And Denver area picked up about 4 to 6. This is what it looked like near Boulder this morning. So, it was a very wet snow and it was not coating the roads at lower elevations, but you get up to I7 in some of the passes. Yes, it was coating the roads in parts of Colorado. Significant late season snowstorm and it's still going.
There's T-Rex. There's the squirrel looking over at T-Rex, wondering where'd that guy come from. Mitt is at the cat mint and Steve is stuck right there.
I'll unstuck Steve. Uh, the wind is still moving pretty good up in the sky.
this morning. Uh map this morning showed winds still gusting 20 to 30 mph near the south coast of New England, but there are no advisories for New England today. And so the wind, I think, is not going to be quite as strong. When you have a mostly cloudy sky, uh you don't get quite as windy often. And it's more stable atmosphere today. So we're not expecting severe thunderstorms, but it is raining. Here's a look at the radar this morning. uh coast to coast, the front from New England dips down to the Gulf States and then lifts back up to Colorado where it continues to snow this morning. And then west uh California also had some snow in the last 24 hours.
And uh the air north of the front in Colorado is the coldest May 6th sunrise ever in our life in a vast area from Montana to Wisconsin.
And temperatures were near freezing all the way down to Colorado where obviously it's it's snowing this morning. And 19 at Wolf Point, Montana was one of the colder spots. So, there's record cold out there and it's headed in our direction, but I don't think we're going to get record cold because we're going to stay in sort of a low barometer cold.
You get your record cold near the high barometer. And here's the coast to coast national weather map for 2:00 this afternoon. And there's our front Maine all the way down to Mississippi and Texas. That's where the severe weather is going to be today. We'll have a thunderstorm, but the severe weather is going to be from Texas to Alabama and Mississippi. Then that front lifts north up into Colorado and it's uh the record cold is under the high pressure system to the north of that at uh Montana is a 10 20 mibar high that goes up into central Canada. And look at this. This squirrel is nuts.
All right. I can not do this with one hand, but the squirrel came over here yesterday and Steve got him. All right, I got a timeout. Time out. All right, squirrel.
Just stay over there, squirrel. You know what's good for you. And let's go this way, kids. got a forecast to do. Mitt the elder statesman says, "What's all the fuss about?" I know, Mitt. I don't know. I can't control them. We're trying to do the weather. You come here not just for the weather. I know that you come here for the natural wildlife and spontaneous events that occur like the sun just breaking through the clouds. Rex. Rex is on a line. All right, let's go to the high resolution rapid refresh for this rain that's coming across New England today. Beneficial rain. We were hoping and thinking a couple days ago that was going to spread into southern New England tomorrow. Gull.
There it is. The rain picking it up about noon time this afternoon. Uh it's about 16 Z 18Z 2:00. You get some yellow in there. Those are showers and thunderstorms possible. Non severe thunderstorms, but drenching rain. very helpful across central and northern New England and western New England, but it kind of breaks up in the Boston area as the sun goes down. The rain is ending and it looks like the front gets just east of New England with some rain lingering in Maine and tomorrow morning on Cape Cod. We still have a little rain going on and so southeastern New England and Maine may stay gray tomorrow and it's colder air at Vection. So, while yesterday we were close to 80, close to 70, 75 today. Tomorrow more like 60 to 65 and in the mountains even colder, but not quite cold enough for snow or well it is actually cold enough for snow, but it just dries out. You see the 540 line.
This goes out now till 2:00 a.m. on Friday. And at that point, we have cold air adction a loft, but it's dry. And what a few days ago looked like a noraster is no longer a noraster on Thursday and Friday. Squirrel. Other way. Other way. Come on. You go back over here. You stay over here until we're done with the weather. I know you got a house in here, too.
Under there.
Right to the GFS.
Uh there are prospects for rain if you miss the rain over the next 24 to 36 hours. And here is the GFS. Look at this.
How do we get anything done? [sighs] Uh the snowstorm in Colorado, that energy is going to go along the front which is going to stall south on the uh southeastern United States. More welcome rain. There have been fires burning there. Here in New England, you have the low pressure system just weak way off to our south and the high pressure system is off to our west. So, we're just getting some instability sprinkles tomorrow afternoon, Friday, and then there is a wave on the front. Warmer air is going to try and come at southern New England on Saturday. And what looked like a little bit of rain now could turn into several hours of rain. Kind of chilly wind from the south and Cape Cod, wind from the north in Vermont, maybe another quarter inch of rain with a possible thunderstorm near the south coast. And then good news for Saturday night and Mother's Day morning, uh, brunch and much of the day. Now, looks like we're going to be between systems.
Uh, another fairly vigorous low pressure system coming across the Great Lakes that looks like it wants to come in now on Monday or Sunday night and Monday morning. We're wet here. Cold is reloading in Canada. There'll be some more record cold in central Canada, but the old cold high pressure system goes off to our south. So all of a sudden on Tuesday, we're warm again. And then the next front with potential cyclloenesis.
We've seen this every week for Thursday and Friday. And it looks like there is going to be some rain and maybe elevation snow here next Thursday and Friday. The barometer gets pretty low.
Uh so there may be some thunderstorms.
And then on the back side of that, we're looking at cold air adction again. And we are on the cold side of the front in New England, but it looks fairly tranquil with the front having stalled off well south of New England. And quite a a few isobars, not so much here in the northeast. We've got a low pressure exiting eastern New England with that 540 line very close to us. And what really stands out is that 1028 high pressure system near Lake Superior.
There may be some record cold in Ontario at that point. And on the west side of that, look at all those isobars now coming up through the Rocky states with a 99 something low near Idaho and the 570 and 576 thickness in the same areas that it's snowing today. Record warmth is in the forecast for later next week.
And then whether that warm wave wants to come back into New England for any extended period, the jury is certainly out on that. But there are prospects for rain just about every other day. And I guess the best news is Sunday, Mother's Day looks like one of the driest days.
Speaking of Mother's Day, I don't know where the parents of those squirrels went. How long do parents of squirrels take care of their kids? We've got Renegade squirrels. Fortunately, Mitt not on a line, doesn't really care that much. Steve is just going to sit there and stare in that direction along with T-Rex. And we made some time lapse yesterday. It was so nice. I came out and worked in the yard and the squirrels and Steve and I were just kind of right next to each other watching and no squirrels were harmed in the making of today's video. Yesterday's weather today is called and more. Nice to see you out here, Mitt.
Oh, and I forgot one thing. Not another view of the squirrel. Yes. But I wanted to show how much precipitation in the next 48 hours.
Here's the QPF from the the short range.
HR dark blue/ inch purple inch.
So parts of central and northern New England get another half inch to an inch and it kind of jumps over Boston less than a tenth of an inch and I believe it too because it's what's been happening here and Cape Cod maybe quarter to a half inch with that low lingering tomorrow and up into eastern Maine. So a big hole in the precipitation there right over the Boston area and my house.
So, maybe I should put some water out for the squirrels, too. What do you guys think?
[snorts] All right, here's yesterday.
Steve and the squirrels and more. Take two. And more calm before the winds. So, those clouds over there are leftovers from yesterday's thunderstorms that were well upstream.
And these are falling apart as they come at us. And new ones are going to form with the heating of the day. And it is already very warm.
What is that noise? Is that a baby squirrel? Does he have a baby squirrel?
Yes, he does.
No. No eating baby squirrels. Stop.
Before I could even get down there, the squirrel got away. And uh the other squirrels, the other babies were waiting for him. He's fine. He wasn't even limping. So, no squirrels were lost.
But it is a a cat after all.
>> 9:30. Watch a couple things here. The squirrel get away. It is warm like summertime. These clouds going over Boston right now. Our leftover thunderstorms from yesterday.
10:00.
I just brought the editing outdoors cuz it's so nice. And Steve has been sitting at my feet.
Yeah, we're editing right there. And I'm watching the baby squirrels. They are so cute.
They're just like hugging and grooming one another. Look at them.
Hi.
They're coming back.
See one right in there.
Why? Because that's our home.
You were just in the jaws of a cat like an hour ago.
You don't want that to happen again, do you?
[laughter] I've got him tied. It's as long as this leash goes.
All right, the saga goes on, but I've got work to do like edit. How do I get anything done? Why are there no birds at the feeder?
Do another time lapse closeup.
Three baby squirrels and one main cat and a bunch of feed.
cat is tied up.
time. All right, Steve's gone in. T-Rex is out now. And the squirrels are just biting their time. That was fun. Oh, so there is some precipitation now coming out of that cloud.
Neat.
See it?
No, it's reaching the ground. So, there's a little bit of rain over there.
>> Yeah.
>> Toward hell. And then here's the clearing behind it. So, here comes the 80°ree weather and the strong wind.
Almost a little bit of a warm front to Genesis.
Yeah, that's how we all feel right now.
We just want to roll in the grass.
>> The worms, the ticks, the bees, baby squirrels.
>> Doesn't get any better than that, does it, Rex? It's like 10:30 in the morning.
We've got all this all together already.
>> Friday, April 17th, about 17 days ago.
Hey, Sparrow. This was the first tulip that was ready to start opening and it's still hanging on. Petals are just going to start falling now. Whereas over here, these ones opened up a week later.
They're not looking as good.
Tulips.
Life is so fleeting. Last year, these were the best ones. Not having a good year this year, but love you.
You too, Song Sparrow. Where are you?
They live in there and they live over there. We got squirrels. We got bunnies.
We get sparrows. We got lots of bees and pretty flowers. Trying to buy the repair kit for that other hose, but they didn't have the right screw. Chuck, [music] it's uh 1:00 here in North Wayoth near Jackson Square, Herring Run, and it's [music] 80° outside.
Dusty 80°. Need to water the peas and lettuce.
concrete going in. Mass concrete final stages looking good of our concourse and steps and boardwalk and sunbathing happening. You know, we've got a sandy beach down there, too, right?
2:00. There's our sandy beach. The tide's slowly coming in and we are protected from that strong wind on this side of the hill. Meanwhile, Big Hill, Northern Vermont. No lift serve skiing.
>> No problem.
>> Goats interrupted right >> and Cooper going for a hike >> up Goat almost >> and then over to JFK >> JFK.
>> Wall to-wall JFK. He says the coverage is better this May than it was last May.
Is that right, Josh? I get that right.
And Now you're getting the thunderstorms and we're in the low 80s.
Monitoring willywanzers.
Hey, it heard me say its name. Hi. And baby squirrels.
Where's the squirrel? I mean, I worked out here and they were just standing next to me in the morning.
Bruce is here. Rex is getting a treat from Bruce the mailman.
And I'm monitoring the baby.
Squirrel day. Here you go. Here at TK Weather Experience headquarters.
Squirrel. Not in a hurry day.
Oh, maybe that's one Steve got.
I'll give you some water and some more food.
birds, too. And in case you're wondering, yes, he is on a leash.
Strategically tied so he can get no closer than that.
No leash on that one, though.
Getting close to time for a time lapse, don't you think? It's getting to be margarita time. Some kind of international margarita day. has something to do with a cultural event in Mexico. I believe most rest of us just find an excuse to drink margaritas.
Beautiful cherry blossoms on the way to the margarita.
Something about the first almost 80° day and margarita day at the same time brings out the populace.
International Margarita Day the 5th be with you.
>> Just in case you haven't been to the local's restroom in the last 5 years, this is what it looks like.
Brian, the owner, somewhat into the waves.
And let's go outside and call it a day with my friends I have not seen in some time because I've been skiing and they've been surfing.
>> Hey Larry, the sun just went down.
>> Do people still surf around here even though it's so cold? Where's the sun?
Where's the sun? Oh, there it is.
>> I'm only going to go surfing when the sun gets above the horizon over there.
Laura and Jimmy and all my friends from Hall. Carol, >> you cannot go out and not run into friends you haven't seen in a while or friends you have not met yet.
>> Like and subscribe. Thank you.
>> So, we're going to call it the end of the day now. We're going to walk over here and look at [music] the sunset. And there's a gull up on the roof pointed into the wind into the southwest.
And we've got the condensation trails and the sunset on our Cinco de Mayo.
Thank you all for watching.
And look at this. So [music] fun.
A couple of time lapse.
Lot of wind out there today.
>> Cape Cod.
>> Nice to see you. Sun and clouds in the 50s on the south coast of Cape Cod because of the water 60s to near 70 inland [music] and then we're in Hangum now. But here in Weimoth, [music] the differential convection, cold air a lot, warm air near the ground, but because the wind was more from the southwest than west, we did not quite get to 80°, but it was close.
Really fun sky after those early showers gave way to mostly sunny, windy, >> and I haven't looked at all the wind reports yet, [laughter] but Your viewership much appreciated.
Contributions much appreciated.
>> G pointing into the wind.
>> Let's hang >> and Wednesday is the day to make the call on the weekend. What's the call?
Should be interesting.
That's the default call. What causes weather? The sun.
It's never going to stop. Thanks for watching. Talk to you tomorrow.
