Effective television storytelling requires balancing the 'show don't tell' principle with necessary narrative progression, as demonstrated in The X-Files episode 'Ascension' where the creators addressed viewer complaints about excessive alien imagery by maintaining ambiguity about whether Scully was abducted by aliens or the government, while still advancing the mythology arc. The episode's success lies in its masterful use of visual storytelling techniques, including strategic lighting, flashbacks, and tension-building set pieces like the cable car sequence, which creates suspense without revealing the truth too early. This approach maintains audience engagement by keeping viewers theorizing and invested in the mystery, while still providing character development and emotional stakes through Mulder's investigation and his relationship with Scully.

Ascension | The X-Files First Time Watching
Added:Well, Alex, it's time for another X-File. And for the first time ever, a part two, a continuation. I don't know what this episode's called because I don't remember, but uh essentially it's Dwayne Barry part two. How do you feel about that?
>> Our first I can't talk today. Our very first ever first time part two on the X Files. I am honestly very excited, but also a little nervous because if this goes well, I can I can see the producers. I can see Chris Carter going, "Oh, oh, that, you know, that was really good. We have to do this every season finale now." So, I'm a little worried in that sense, but I'm going to enjoy the first time aspect of this year. The show has been so great so far. Uh, we've had a little bit of small complaints, especially with Dwayne Barry, part one in terms of showing too much and losing that magic of what made the first season special of not showing us. Uh it's about uh the opposite of show don't tell tell don't show [laughter] uh talk talk about it in a way but in a way I can understand we need to have a progression from season one. I mean if it was just I don't know 10 seasons of never seeing anything it'd be a bit ridiculous. So there's definitely a fine balance of what to do and I I don't know what that is. I've never made a television show. But uh in terms of the resolution here I'm hoping I'm just hoping that the whole thing is fake.
It's all the government. It's cigarette man and bald man and uh secret agent uh gender bender guy. I I I don't know. I don't know.
>> Yeah, I'll say on that if you happen to be uh new here and are not familiar with our Star Trek reactions, um thank you for being here. But uh I think last episode was uh maybe the first example of like we both liked the episode. You know, these things of oh they, you know, the aliens didn't look great. They're they were shown too much in the light.
Um, and all the external shot of the house and or you know the the barcode scanning at the grocery store. It's like, oh, these are like ancillary complaints. Uh, you know, they're not anything that's like, oh, this episode sucks because of this, you know, but that's just how we talk about stuff. We, you know, we watch the episode and then we give our raw thoughts and we have a lot of preferences and we talk about those things. But, uh, I just wanted to, you know, throw that out there because I think it can come off as we didn't like it as much as we did. But I have huge respect for doing the very first to be continued two-parter just in the middle of the season, episode 5, you know, versus uh in Star Trek it got introduced at season finale. I feel like season finale, it's such a common thing uh or season premiere, you know, and maybe this show does that eventually. But to just do your very first one, it just, you know what, we're a month into the new season. Do it to be continued. I think that's awesome. And uh even though the interrogation stuff wasn't as peak as I would have liked it, uh it you know it led to that and hopefully we get an awesome you know part two to this and we'll find out is this an arc. Is it going to be to be continued again or is it just a straight up two-parter? I'm very excited to get started. It' be great if we got Major Barrett to do the previously on the X Files.
Oh yeah. I was going to wonder if they did anything like that, but nope. They just trust you. You watched it. Get over it.
That's what I like to see. Pick up right from where we left off.
>> Yeah.
>> I like 5:00 shadow moulder. You think we'll ever see full bearded moulder?
>> Oo, probably not, but that'd be insane.
[laughter] >> Nice.
Jesus is my daughter's apartment. Just >> let me go. I have to get through.
>> What?
>> I have to get in.
>> Sheila Harkin.
>> Can I get the angle here?
>> Where is she?
>> Maybe we had a different director here.
That that whole uh detective style work was completely unique. The stuff we haven't seen yet in terms of seeing evidence from the crime scene and then flashing to it. I think >> I was thinking who knows maybe uh Chris just continued to direct like if it's if it's like I'm doing this whole thing.
We'll see.
>> That'd be neat if he had like two separate ideas for two different episodes. That that'd be nice >> already. Huge credit for not recasting the mom.
>> Deny everything. What?
>> All right. Okay.
[music] >> All right.
I had this dream about Dana being taken away. It's so strange.
Are >> they trying to introduce that her mom is some kind of psychic or something?
>> I don't know.
>> Agent Skully's research states that Dwayne Barry's propensity for violent deviant behavior is due to brain damage from a bullet wound in the head.
>> Oh, okay.
>> We've seen him before.
>> Yeah.
>> He's convinced he's going to be abducted by aliens. [music] That by taking someone to the abduction site, he won't be abducted himself.
that he's following orders from alien voices in his head.
>> Yes.
>> Everyone looks at him.
>> Go home, Agent Moulder. You've been up all night. Get some sleep.
>> Sir, I know Dwayne Barry. I've been [music] in his head. I know how he >> You're too close to this case.
>> If we can use you, we will. [music] >> Sir, that's an order. Agent Moulder.
Make sure he gets home safely.
>> I mean, he's right in terms of he is too close to the case, but that's not going to stop him. Yeah.
[laughter] Okay. Got the rights to this song.
Little bit of Pey Blinders.
>> For all my Pey Blinders fans out there.
>> News in that show. Your boy Tom Hardy.
>> Yep.
[screaming] >> He loves these focus shifts. Michael Lange.
I mean, a way this whole show does sometimes.
This cop gonna die.
Oh [ __ ] I got to be someplace. Where? I'm not sure, but they'll tell me when I get there.
>> Don't stop, Dwayne. Barry, >> sir, put your hands up.
>> Make noise. Yep. There it is. Oh, right there.
>> Oh, they still got the video. That's good. Ah, that's cool.
Okay, now magnify [music] this area.
>> Zoom and enhance.
>> My god, >> she's still alive. Pick this up.
>> We think this might be her. [laughter] Where was that patrolman killed again?
>> Rick Seyville, Virginia. Route 229.
>> Doesn't Route 229 lead to the Blue Ridge Parkway?
>> I was going to say, wherever this guy is going, it's probably not going to be super far away. It's like, what's your closest big mountain?
>> Yeah.
Ascend to the stars, Skyland Mountain.
>> Oh, get your car and meet me downstairs in 5 minutes.
>> Where are we going?
>> Just get your car.
>> What about Skinner?
>> I'll deal with Skinner. Yeah. Who gives a [ __ ] about Skinner?
[laughter] >> Oh god.
Hey, >> he didn't sleep, did he?
>> He dozing off. Maybe I should drive.
>> Fine.
>> Why did you wait until he was all the way on the other side of the road to say something? You didn't notice that before that? Like he was just fully in the lane. I scroll on Tik Tok.
>> You know, Chernobyl, Fexon Vald, three mile, they were all linked to sleep deprivation.
>> Really?
>> 190,000 fatal car crashes every year are caused by sleepiness.
>> They estimate how many people are put to sleep listening to their statistics.
[laughter] >> There's that witty boulder.
>> If we find him first, we'll notify the bureau. All right.
>> Yeah. You really think you tracked it down with that implant?
>> Well, that's the easiest explanation.
Oh, >> is there another possibility?
>> Somebody could have given him her address.
>> I don't know who.
>> I was actually thinking that, but why would they? Cuz they wanted the device back.
>> Like the FBI did it. You think?
>> Smoking man.
>> Oh my god. It's the [ __ ] driver. The truck driver from last episode.
>> I mean, from last season from EBE. I think the guy with the rash and stuff.
>> Yeah.
>> We just got done refitting the cable. It hasn't been tested with passengers yet.
You'll have to drive.
>> [laughter] >> No, you don't have a choice. [music] >> What are the odds? Love those recasts.
Casting director's getting a bit lazy.
>> I hope it's just a running gag always.
>> Speed indicator controls your ascent.
Now, when you want to slow down, >> don't crank IT FASTER THAN 15.
>> OH, it's like uh Anakista. I when I went to uh Galenburg, Tennessee last year, they have a thing like this, but it was just ski lift type benches that were really like rickety and you felt like you were going to die. But they they literally just now I guess switched them all to these things, >> like a newer version of them.
>> It was pretty scary.
>> Yeah, he's way past 15. Oh, I bet. Yeah, >> if you're afraid of heights. I mean, if you're not afraid of heights, probably doesn't matter.
>> Do you hear that sound? At this speed, the cable can't hold.
[music] >> What if Moulder just fell asleep on it?
Would it crash?
>> Base to car one, pick up.
These have no regulation whatsoever.
>> Slow it down.
>> You're breaking up.
>> Slow it down. The cable will jump the track at the tower.
>> All right, I'll go down to 25.
[laughter] Shoulder freaking crashes himself. Can't even get up to the mountain. Oh my god.
>> Slowing down for the next tower.
By the way, this is a great use of like building tension. Yeah.
>> How close is he?
>> Should be up top in a minute.
>> Oh no, >> there he is. [music] No.
>> Okay, he didn't shoot him at least.
>> But this guy is like evil. evil.
He's not just an innocent uh not innocent, but you know, I thought maybe he was just like a lacky like informant like, "Oh yeah, I'm in the FBI. I'll do what you say." But no, he's like bought in.
>> I've got him stalled up there.
>> Can you read me?
>> I'll hold him until you advise him.
[music] >> The perfect like slimy looking actor for this role. [laughter] No offense to the guy, but [ __ ] it. He He got a job.
>> I'm sure he knew that. He knew that.
[laughter] Yeah, I'm sure his casting directors or agents told him, "Yeah, you look like a slimy piece of shit." I mean, plus the way they like style his hair and stuff, it's like they know.
>> Yeah.
>> Yet again, totally thought, "All right, now she's going to be gone." Uh, Julian, you know, okay, now she's giving birth.
Nope.
[music] >> Oh, he's going to have to parachute jump out of the What? [music] >> Great on location stuff.
>> Yeah.
Oh my god. [ __ ] maniac.
Oh [ __ ] [screaming] >> I'm telling you, he thinks he's Tom Cruz. He's the OG Tom Cruz. [laughter] Tom Cruz is watching us, taking notes.
>> Yeah, >> that high pressure ridge has the unstable activity on the weekend.
Joining me now for the business report.
>> And this guy got his car up there. I guess you could just drive the whole way. It takes longer.
>> Yeah.
>> Silver was down 80s. The blue chip indicator rose in moderate trading.
>> If she's still there, >> just you have to check.
>> We'll abolish it for housing and replace it with >> a Oh crap, that looks great.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah.
>> Got a weird run.
>> Yes.
>> Freeze.
>> Yes. I said freeze. WHERE IS SHE? I'M FREE. YOU SON OF A [ __ ] Where'd you leave her? They took her.
Who?
I told you they were going to take somebody else.
>> [screaming and groaning] >> It's a helicopter, bro. I think >> the sheriff search and rescue chopper has found him on the mountain.
>> Yeah, search and rescue chopper. Um, so this is Is this how Skully's going to be gone for a little bit? Also, notice how it's great because when he showed up, that spotlight thing showed up and he saw the light in the sky, but then the second time it was the chopper. So, was it the chopper the first time or was that the UFO? It's like that's how you do it.
>> Yep.
>> And if Skully's abducted by aliens, that's insane. [laughter] >> Abducted twice, two different ways.
>> Yeah. I love you, Chris Carter, but you need a guy like Michael Lange to come around. [laughter] >> If Michael had been on set, he would have known.
>> All right, Boulder's going to beat the [ __ ] out of him.
and kind of like the reverse interrogation where I think he was tied up before.
>> I saw a helicopter.
>> They were here. I'M NOT LYING TO YOU.
There they are.
>> That's them.
>> DID YOU HURT HER? [screaming] >> NO. WHAT IS THIS?
Oh [ __ ] He's going to [ __ ] snap.
Dude, when I said he was going to beat him up, I was joking.
>> They had to take her. I hope they're not hurting her [sighs and gasps] too much with the test.
>> And it's like now it's also like was she abducted by aliens or was she just taken by the government?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Because the way Skinner and Cry and all this and making it seem like they've wanted to take Scully out now, I think.
>> Yeah. I mean, Nice.
Oh, wait. Wait. [laughter] What?
They literally just She gives birth.
[snorts] >> [laughter] >> So [ __ ] Oh my god.
>> Get the [ __ ] out of here.
>> They [laughter] used >> See, that's the >> Or is that just what he's thinking is happening?
>> Oh, maybe. Oh, that's Yeah, that's probably it. But see, the genius of Michael Lange. We didn't see the aliens.
[laughter] >> We're going to be harping on this so much.
>> [laughter] >> That's such a great way to use her pregnant belly. That's hilarious.
>> That's great. Can we also talk about how I love how I have no idea how this is going to end.
>> Yeah. Or what's even happening?
>> Yeah.
Yeah. No one goes in or out of that room, you [ __ ] >> Come here. Come here.
>> I heard him gagging in there. He couldn't breathe.
>> NO ONE.
>> HE SAID YOU CHOKED.
>> No one.
Did you ask him about Scully?
>> Yep.
>> What'd he say?
>> He said a whistling stairway to heaven.
>> Yeah, that's not what happened.
>> Mhm.
>> It's like how long until Moulder catches on to this guy?
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, Jesus.
>> What happened? He was [groaning] gay.
>> Dwayne. Dwayne.
>> [snorts] >> Okay. So, whatever Alex did, he killed him.
>> Yeah.
>> What a shitty life this guy's had. Just >> respiration. Nothing.
>> Come on, Moulder. Put it together.
>> You're not FBI. [music] >> Quanico is under military jurisdiction.
There wasn't an FBI pathologist available this morning.
>> Yep. That was on purpose.
Also, do you think they're going to like try to pin it on him? Like he choked him to death?
>> Oh, maybe. Yeah.
>> Mhm.
[clears throat] >> Either way, he killed him.
>> Yeah.
>> If Moulder is such a threat, why not eliminate him?
>> That's not policy.
>> It's not.
>> Kill Moulder and you risk turning one man's religion into a crusade.
>> What about Skully?
>> We've taken care of that.
>> How?
>> I think I have a right to know. You have no rights, only orders to be carried out. If you have a problem with that, we'll make other arrangements.
>> Yeah, bro. And also, you're in too deep now. So, it's not even like you can go against this guy cuz you will be killed.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> But Kelly Moulder, that's not policy.
>> Yeah.
>> That the military covered up the toxicological findings.
>> And why would they do that?
>> Because they know where Scully is.
>> Why are you so paranoid, Malder?
>> Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's because I find it hard to trust anybody.
>> Can I borrow your car keys?
>> Why? Where are you going?
>> Somebody I got to see.
>> Yeah, but we're scheduled at LPC.
>> Give me the keys.
>> Do you have your own car?
>> Apparently not.
>> Embassy.
>> Don't forget 1:00.
[laughter] >> It's not remastered.
>> So, you think the government has skull?
>> You wasted a trip, MR. MOLDEN. OH, >> THERE'S NOTHING THE SENATOR can do for you now.
>> Why do they have something on him?
>> They have something on everyone, Mr. Moulder.
>> Yep.
>> The question is when they'll use it.
>> I need his help.
>> No one can help you now.
>> Why kill Dwayne Barry if there was nothing to hide?
>> You mean the government?
>> There are [music] no answers for you, Mr. Moulder.
>> They only have one policy.
Deny everything.
>> Incredible lighting. Yeah.
>> How long do you think he was standing there in the stereo waiting for him to come in? [snorts] >> Two days.
>> And then someone else walked in and they went, "You wasted a trip, Mr. Moulder.
[laughter] Oh, I'm sorry. I'm waiting for somebody else."
>> [laughter] >> But by the time like Muller comes in, he forgets. He just doesn't care. Mr. [laughter] >> Damn. It's like, what do you even do?
That's the setting. I always have it on.
Max AC.
>> Oh, and he's like he's going to be like, "Alex doesn't smoke." Oh, yeah. You know, it's the mid 90s, so it's kind of like 50/50. People smoke or not.
>> That's true. Yeah.
>> If it had been like the 70s or 80s, it'd have been like, "Oh, he probably smokes."
>> And the possible murder of the tram operator at Skyland Mountain.
>> They did [clears throat] kill him.
>> Are you standing behind this going on the record?
>> Yes, sir.
>> Well, then you damn well better have the facts to back it up.
>> I need to see Agent Cry immediately.
>> Dude, what an awkward interaction.
>> Have to be like, I'm accusing you of murder. [laughter] How about Skinner, man? Like being a higher up, but he's just completely in the dark about everything.
>> Agent Kryek was the last person with Dwayne Barry before he died. He was also the last person to see the tram operator before he disappeared.
>> Agent Cry didn't show up for work this morning.
>> We can't do anything about it.
>> Let it go, Agent Moulder.
>> Like hell, >> there's nothing you can do.
>> What can you do about it?
There's only one thing that I can do, Agent Moulder. As of right now, I'm reopening the X Files.
That's what they fear the most.
>> Damn, that wasn't what I expected.
[laughter] What you were saying about Skinner, though, it's like Yeah. I almost kind of feel bad cuz he seems like one of the only like legitimate FBI employees just trying to do his job.
>> Yeah. It's just in a terrible position.
>> If she was such a skeptic, why did she wear that?
>> I gave it to her on her 15th birthday.
>> When you find her, you give it to her.
[music] >> Damn. Feel bad for Scully's mom. It's like first time we see her, husband dies. Second time Dana abducted.
I'll put that on a shirt.
[music] >> THAT'S IT.
>> WHAT? NOT EVEN to be continued. IT'S JUST OH, WHOA. [laughter] >> WOW. OKAY. SO, YEAH. SO, it's not to be continued, but clearly she gone.
[laughter] >> All right.
>> Let me tell you about a guy. His name's Michael.
We just watched season 2, episode 6 of The XFiles. Ascension and I guess titled Ascension because of the whole mountain thing would be my guess. And also the Ascension of Skully maybe being abducted by aliens. An interesting name.
>> Yeah. And the name of the ride was Ascension to the Stars, right? So >> yeah, I don't remember. But um yeah, definitely in my opinion definitely the best episode of the show that does not have a heavy focus of Skully. And even taking that caveat away, one of my favorite episodes overall. Um Michael Lang or Lange directed Young at Heart and Miracle Man. What a step up. Not that direction was bad in those, but nothing noteworthy that I remember.
maybe a few cool shots and stuff, but this was one of my favorite visual uh X-Files episodes thus far.
>> Yeah, not only one of my favorite visual episodes thus far, but I think this season might be my favorite so far. Uh it's up there neck andneck with uh whichever one has Squid Man.
>> Fluke Man.
>> Fluke Man. Yeah, >> I think that was episode two.
>> Episode two. Yeah, right now those are neck andneck, but in terms of the mythology versus Monster of the Week, they're both at the top for both of those respective lists. I absolutely love this episode. One of the most visually appealing episodes we've seen and also in terms of furthering this story and not doing the safer. I mean, I understand uh Gill Jillian. Yeah, Julian Anderson's having her baby and all that, but they use that in the episode in a great scene of whatever. [laughter] I'm just picturing her. You want me to What? When they pitch this to her, we got this great idea.
>> Yeah. Before you go, >> wait, before you go, can we hook this thing up to your stomach? since literally the entire episode she is in it, but all she does is lay in a trunk where you only see her face and then that alien abduction sequence. So yeah, clearly she was she was right there ready to go.
>> Yeah. One of my favorite endings too of Mhler just looking up at the stars and then having that scene with her mom with the whole you know you want this back.
It's like no, you give it to her and you get her. It's like let's go Moulder.
>> Yeah. Uh Sheila Larkin.
>> Sheila Larkin.
>> She was one of my favorite guest performances in season one. incredible in Beyond the Sea and uh comes back.
Credit to them for not recasting and she was great yet again. Um and also writer Paul Brown, not the first time we've seen something from him. Uh it is in this show, but he wrote one episode in the first season of Quantum Leap, which we watched a number of years ago.
>> Do you know which episode it was?
>> It was called The Kamicazi Kid. I don't remember which one it was, but if I had to guess, maybe the car racing one. Uh but I don't remember. I'd have to look it up. but uh he was a producer on that show and uh this is the first episode he wrote here. Uh has not had any Star Trek credits that I saw. Um and so the writing was also great. Firebar lines like you just brought up with the mom character, but all throughout the episode um and the twists, the reveals, it also basically took all of my complaints from the last episode and showed how to do them well. The aliens were covered in bright light and barely seen, but all of the alien imagery was creepy and effective. Uh, but it was also shown as if is this happening or is it not? We don't know. Was she taken by aliens? Was she just taken by the government? And the one kind of that pregnant scenario was looked as if it was just Moulder's imagination, but the imagery of it was great when the light flashes on her and then her pupils are uh I always I don't know the opposite of dilated when they go really small. Um, and uh that was all really effective and didn't look silly or anything like that.
And uh yeah, everything about it was excellent. Skinner, great Skinner appearance. Yeah, Sk uh yeah, Skinner is great. And I I can't help but feel bad for the guy because he seems like he's just in the dark about everything. He's getting orders from upstairs and he just has to carry them out. And upstairs seems to know everything that's going on because I'm assuming upstairs is cigarette man.
And Cry's just a a piece of garbage. I guess he just killed that guy. But also, I mean, what about the ending when he goes he calls him to the office, oh, he didn't report to work today. And Moulder's like, "Oh, so what? He just disappears into the woodwork?" He's like, "Yeah, I guess so." It's like, is he gone now? Like, did they kill him?
Did Smokey Man go, "Oh, he's too much of a threat. Kill him or is or, you know, we're going to reshuffle him around."
Like, is he gone now? I I I don't know.
I I'd like to hope that he's not because I think he's a great antagonist, and I hope it leads to a nice big fist fight between Moulder and him. How about Moulder, too? He's just being absolutely pushed to the absolute [ __ ] limits and he just and he loves Scully so much, you know, friendship and partner and all that and just [ __ ] chokes Dwayne Barry, >> dude. David Cooney, his face when he was doing that choking, he's just like like it was one of his best, I think, performance moments so far in this show.
Just like the emotion he's trying to hold back from literally killing this guy with his bare hands. And Dwayne Barry, too. Uh Steve Rails back. Uh, good performance here, but this just the character of Dwayne Barry just nothing but a victim in this entire [ __ ] thing. Do I agree with him giving Scully to Back to the These Aliens? No, but the torture he's had to endure if it was aliens or the government and all that just poor [ __ ] guy. And then just be killed by Cryche.
It's terrible.
>> Oh yeah. And uh I do think he was I mean I thought he was good in the last episode except for when they try to you know jump too much into the crazy stuff.
Another thing I complained about that was addressed here where he was still himself the Dwayne Barry character but nothing was over the top or you know ridiculous like the opening scene for example with the cop you know stopping him. He was creepy. He was clearly like out of it but he was still really well done. Uh and then on the mountain when uh Moulder goes and gets him and he's all like crazy. It's not like it's believable. It's very well done. He did a great job. Uh and I think part of it probably on the direction of the actors too probably helped a little bit. I'm really not trying to crap on Chris Carter or anything like he created the show. This is all his baby and he, you know, he's like the Gene Rodenberry of this, right? Like he gets the credit, but at the same time, just like Gene Rodenberry or George Lucas or anything else is like you need other people, you know, to make it a successful thing.
>> You need [clears throat] professionals or need people to say, "Hey, maybe that's not the best idea." And obviously Michael Angel is just a veteran director. You're looking as IMDb. He's directed every single thing that's ever come out.
>> Yeah. Michael Yeah. whole bunch of uh directing credits of a whole bunch of different shows. One of those directors he's like directs a couple here, directs a couple, you know, and obviously, like I said, he did a couple season ones. So, hopefully he continues to do more. But, uh the lighting when Moulder goes and meets the new [ __ ] insert, who we still don't know his name, and when he is in the shadow, and then it's just his mouth, you know, and then he fully comes out of the light. And we've seen him before, so it's not like it's a reveal, but it's like just so masterfully done.
>> Yeah. Deny everything in the opening credits this time. We caught it this time. Caught it this time.
>> Now I know to pay attention.
>> Erin Meyer Flask. We uh we missed it or whatever. But yeah, deny everything.
And how about Yeah, this episode everything great character moments and a little bit of action tension with Moulder riding up the escalator thing.
and love David Devany, but I'm gonna chalk it up to his character being lack of sleep, but the entire time just [laughter] But it pays off later when he freaks out on Dwayne Barry, but for the most part, it's just, >> hey, what's going on down there? What's going on? Yeah, it was a great tense uh sequence. great way to use a set piece like that, you know, and cause that tension where we know Moulder's not going to die, but there's so many great ways to still cause tension. And that's one of them because maybe he doesn't die, but like theoretically this thing could jump the tower, whatever they're saying, and crash and like he would survive, but it would still be insane.
Like those things could happen. Or when he climbs up on top of it and then Cry starts moving it and he's hanging off.
Like that was great stuff just for like a set piece in this episode. That'll definitely be one of the memorable parts. Um, you also really loved the moment at the end with the silhouette when he's on the mountain when you said put that on a shirt.
>> Yeah, just just the perfect amount of silhouette where you can see David's face and just a little bit of the white lighting. I'm like, "Oh, that'd be so great on a t-shirt of him just like looking up like someone make that for me and send it to to me. [laughter] I live at 308 Royal Negro. Royal." Uh, >> and also another moment of just that's it. We're booting up the X Files. It's like let's go. Oh, it's like we they didn't do it in episode one this season or episode two. They made us wait so goddamn long and this whole long story arc getting to it just >> Oh, we also talk about if Scully was abducted by aliens. It's not Moulder who gets to meet the aliens and be abducted.
It's Scully.
>> That makes it so great though. And also if she if that is what happens and you know she does eventually return you know she's not going to like have full memory of it or be like I don't think she's going to be a Dwayne Barry when she gets back like she probably won't really remember it or it'll be like suppressed or you know like it leaves a lot of open possibilities of how they do that cuz that you know I was a little bit um disappointed when my flash she finds this alien baby and then we just never mention it again because that's a little bit more of like a concrete like oh I saw this this happened. But like getting abducted by aliens is something that like people uh at least from what you hear and stuff is like it's not as if it's like oh yeah I'm fully uh lucid and aware of what's going on. You know what I mean? So it's like when she gets back that could be something she struggles with that she doesn't want to talk about. Uh or it could still just be that she was taken by the government. And I again we talked about like the whole like showing the UFO over the house and stuff in the last episode. How great that Moulder gets there. You see the bright light and you think oh is this a UFO? and you see the light and you're like, "Oh, it could be a UFO, but it doesn't really show it." And then they see it again, but it's the shopper, you know, and it's like, "Oh, who took her?"
Because you have this whole plot going on in the background the whole time. And I think that they were trying to do that in both of these episodes. In both of these episodes, they wanted you to think, is it aliens or is it the government? Like, which was theory, but it was executed so much better in this one in my opinion. And so, this was like this is complete peak S tier for me. I loved this one so much. Uh, and it this was like the example of the show kind of stepping up to the next level in my opinion when it especially when it comes to the alien episodes because it's just like what a ride. Yeah, this is one of the very few times very few times where part two [ __ ] slam dinks it and is better than part one and it's just it might be my favorite two-parter I think >> without even feeling like a part two.
Like it picks up from where the episode left off obviously, but it feels more like a serialized type story where next episode. Okay, so the XFiles are back according to Skinner. Skully's not. So >> Cry's gone.
>> So it's like next week do we just get a Monster of the Week X-File with Moulder and then there's like a comment about how Skull is still missing and that's it. Like I'm very interested.
>> I don't know. And just the lack of a to be continued is just making me so confused. And I wonder if that was intentional to make people think, oh [ __ ] what if she's not coming back or how long is she going to be gone? Are things going to carry on? I'm very curious what the first 10 20 minutes of the next week's episode is going to be.
Are they just going to play it off like Skully's not there?
Oh god. I And also uh you already harped on it, but I love the whole is it the government or is it the aliens cuz Skinner, not Skinner, he looks like Principal Skinner, cigarette smoking man. So I want to call him He looks like from the Simpsons. He looks like Principal Skinner.
>> So I I keep wanting I keep wanting to call him Skinner because he looks like [ __ ] Skinner.
>> That's funny. But like cigarette man, he was kind of talking talking with Kryche about Skully being taken care of, which kind of implies that yes, it could be the government doing it, but it's not directly confirmed. And it's it's good. It's really good.
>> The cigarette smoking man and the scenery is in the car with Kryek and Cry's like, "Why don't we just kill him?" The reason he gives is uh because you could turn one man's religion into a uh I forget the word he says, but crusade.
>> Crusade.
>> You think it's like a martyr? like all these things are going to start coming out and the crumble like may maybe because people know about Moulder or the the lone gunman or is it lone gunman IAP all those >> just like if they took out Moulder that's that's confirmation.
>> Yeah, I think it's an okay reasoning but I'm still holding out that there's even more than that. Like that's like the easy answer of like oh we can't kill him because he's too wellknown. But they've already kidnapped him in the past and like I feel like uh I still think there might be actually more to it than just that. Um I mean there's, you know, 10 seasons or whatever left, so we'll find out. But I I think that's like the easy surface level answer of like, okay, yeah, that's believable that they wouldn't want to kill him because of that. But at the end of the day, they still would if they had to. But I think there's even more going on that Smoky Man's just not going to tell Cryek, who's clearly just a low-level grunt, you know, at this point.
Um, so yeah, the smoking man I still find very interesting because even Skinner kind of like realizes at this point when Moulder shows him the cigarette and everything and he's like, "Oh, he's in this covert operation." I think even Skinner knows like, "Yeah, I don't know what up that smoking guy. I don't know what his deal is, but like even he knows like he's up to some stuff." I think it's pretty clear at this point. So I wonder how much Skinner is going to become just like a full-fledged still a hard ass, but basically just like yeah, I'm on Moulder's side. Like it's pretty obvious at this point like he's not on the in in the inside circle. He's not in these shadowy unless he's just the best worker of all time and we get worked.
>> Oh, like [laughter] Yeah. Where obviously we at the as the audience are shown Skinner and Cry Chick, but we're not even but they don't do it with Skinner where that's completely hidden from us to make it even a better reveal.
Yeah, >> that would be really good. That would be interesting. But I have a feeling that Skinner is going to start to flip and they're going to find a reason to take him out.
>> Oh no.
>> Or something.
>> Ah, that would suck. Yeah. And also when it comes to my theory that maybe Moulder's not too famous but not even important, but do you think do you think there's like internet message boards where they're talking about the FBI like lone gunman? They're definitely in the the equivalent of Reddits back then, the message boards and the secret little websites about aliens and stuff and do you think there's articles and pages and discussions about Moulder? Like have you heard about this FBI agent Moulder? Oh yeah.
>> These are investig these cases have to be public like public news and everything. this bowlers guy is always there.
>> Yeah. I mean, Nikap already knew about him and and you know, he said Max said last time that like message boards or whatever they were talking about the article he did where he used an anagram for his name and there and so like people are already aware of him. You know that was the whole when he's like I didn't think anyone was was paying attention. People are always paying attention.
>> Someone's always paying attention.
>> I think like even though he knows the lone gunman personally obviously I think someone like the lone gunman would already be fully aware of Moulder even if they didn't know him in real life.
Yeah.
>> So, I think that is 100% there's message boards going on early internet days of this older guy. Every weird case we're looking into or or even like the I wonder how public the existence of the X Files is in the government. You know what I mean? if like that being a department if like you're able to I wonder how classified it all is in terms of like oh there's this department of the FBI called the XFiles and this detective Moulder is is the lead of it and yeah they probably do they probably do know a lot they just don't know all of the details.
>> Yeah, people are really into this [ __ ] So >> and and as the government like unless it's classified it has to be public. So they would classify I'm sure a lot of it but for a lot of it they would have no reason to classify it because it's unexplained.
>> That's true. So yeah, very fascinating.
Um, I don't have much more to say necessarily. It's just one of those where it's like, yeah, I loved all this and I'm super excited for the next episode. Uh, visually was great, score was great. I mean, it's just everything about it. It's just like perfect.
>> Yeah, I already talked about it in the episode, but the uh directional choice of the not whatever it's called where Moulder looks at something, looks at the broken phone, and then we're shown the scene of what happens. And he does that a few times in the beginning of the episode when he goes in the Skully's apartment and he looks at things.
>> Oh, and it gives us flashes.
>> Yeah. Through like Moulder's eyes looking at it or imagining it maybe >> and then that confirms later when uh with Moulder's uh imagination of what he thinks happened the Skully when she was abducted.
>> It was just the perfect like we can assume that most of that stuff like the flashes is what really happened, but it's just the perfect way to do it. It's the exact complaint I had and they fixed it. It's the exact thing.
>> Once again, they listened to us, [laughter] went back in time, and fixed it in this episode and [ __ ] slam dunked this [ __ ] this two-parter. It It was great. I I I love it. It might be my favorite one.
>> You're saying just in TV of what we watched >> of what of what we've seen on >> since it's obviously the first one here.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Since it's the first one.
It's my favorite two-parter of the X-Files. I can't believe it.
>> Huge praise. But yeah, I just hope I I already harped on it, but I just hope that this is special. This is obviously very special. Save your two-parters for something very special. I'm curious with the season finale of this season's going to be because now that we know, okay, the show's around the play and it's not just uh with season the season one finale being a possible ending, but it could be open for more. And it makes me wondering how they're going to end this season and what are they going to end with? I mean, that's we're not there yet, but yeah, luckily we're still like four months away from having to worry about it. But, uh, yeah, I'm fully expecting a cliffhanger at the end of the season. But, I mean, it is just it is what it is. We'll see. But, I will say the one thing I would differ on what you just said is I'm not I wouldn't hold it to just the standard of two-parters.
I would just say I would look at it as more like something like the Clone Wars, which I've only watched the first season of with you, but where we're going to have individual episodic episodes, but then every once, you know, once in a while, not as much as the Clone Wars, but it'll be like, "Oh, here's a three episode arc. Here's a two episode arc, you know, and so I don't think I'll be surprised if we get more to be continued. Um, but they might not even need to be continued to be considered an arc, you know, like, oh, we're gonna have four episodes where maybe there is a monster of the week thrown in there, but this all is kind of dealing with the same thing. Like, I don't know how long this is going to last, but once it's over, we could probably call this group of episodes like, oh, the Skully Abduction arc, you know what I mean?
Like, whenever she ends up coming back.
>> So, it's like that's kind of how I'm looking at it. So, I'm not as uh worried about getting it to be continued because I don't think it's going to follow the boring part one to set up part two because we need to do a two-parter, says the studio. Like, I'm not worried about that with this. I I do agree that they shouldn't overdo it, but and don't get too serialized. I want my episodic monster of the week fun stuff, but I do think it'll fall more into episodes and then arcs, which I'm cool with.
>> Yeah. And I wonder if they thought, "Oh, we can do these arcs and we can give we can give ourselves a little break from having to come up with the monster of the week every week."
>> Yeah, >> because it'd be a bit >> I will agree sometimes it will be get ridiculous if we're visiting vampires and werewolves and uh fluke mans every week, but stories like this and it's very convenient that Jillian Anderson was pregnant at this time so we can do stories like this. But I'm sure they were very grateful not to just make up some reason to have a wolf man, the equivalent of a wolf man or something.
So, >> what a great way to to use and work around her pregnancy. I mean, just excellently done there. Um, because so many shows will just not address it and then they're gone for a few weeks and they come up with some random excuse.
But I'm mostly thinking of sitcoms where it's not as big of a deal and you also don't just have two main characters like this show does. Uh, but yeah, got to give him credit for that. And last thing I'll say on that is the Monster of the Week element. like you just said, the Tony Todd episode really gave me a lot of uh not hope. I already liked them, but it really opened my eyes to like, oh, we can do Monster of the Week episodic and still sprinkle in all of that kind of serialized stuff. So, even when we get like if next week is a, oh, next week we're going to look at Lizard Man or something, it's like I I would not be surprised if there's still, you know, the abduction story and Cryche or or whoever it is like still sprinkled in there. I feel like they're kind of just accepting that now, which makes sense.
They got to figure it out. They got to figure it out. One last thing. Do you think any audience members who maybe aren't chronically online or the equivalent of chronically online or knowing about celebrities, do you think there's people who didn't know Julian Anderson was pregnant and then saw that scene and went, "What? They're pregnant?" Yeah, I'm sure. And also, I was going to say that if there were people who did not know, then this episode is like I'm sure they could connect the dots. But, uh, I'm sure there's plenty of people who didn't know. And I was also going to say plenty of people who just didn't watch last week when it aired and then they're watching this and at the beginning they go, "Oh [ __ ] she was taken by someone and don't even know who Dwayne uh Barry is."
>> Yeah. Tune in every week.
>> I keep wanting saying Dwayne Bo, the NFL receiver from about a decade decade ago who like played for the 49ers and then played for the Browns for one year. So [snorts] I keep mixing that up. But anyway, Dwayne Barry. Um but yeah, anything else before we get the patron takes?
>> No, that's it. Uh Michael Lange, you're my guy.
Uh, so now we're going to patreon.com/target audience. We'll get our patron takes if you're wondering what that is for every single episode of the X-Files and now Star Trek. No, I'm kidding. Reverse that. of Star Trek. But now the X-Files that we watch, we put a little post on patreon.com/target audience where you a potential patron can leave your take on the episode we just watched. Do you love it? Do you hate it? Do you have a fun fact? Do you have a question? Do you have a funny meme? Do you have a little story? We want to know it. Keep it short three to five sentences about a paragraph.
There's a chance right now on the air, Josh and I are going to read your take, respond to it, and have a good time, and the entire internet will see it. So, keep that in mind when you're writing it. So, please sign up today.
patreon.com/target audience. Let us know your take on the X-Files. Well, hey, Zen-like creature points out what you did. It's good to see that the truck driver from the season 1 episode EB managed to get another job after transporting an alien across the US. A great two-parter, in my opinion, which set to a more focused mythology narrative than the vague and odd teases of the previous episodes. Hope this has left you intrigued for where the mythology narrative is heading at this point in the series. Uh first of all, we didn't talk about that in the discussion, but yeah, the recast of the EB truck driver. That was a great call by Did you watch rewatch that recently or >> No, he just has a very distinct face. He looks like Robert England a little bit.
>> Oh, yeah, he does a little bit. Yeah. Uh but I hope we continue to call out those recasts when they happen because it's always >> I I love it. Just uh people like Mike Flanigan are known to reuse their actors all the time in certain things, but not in the same universe really. Mhm.
>> So, uh I I love seeing that if there's just one minor character from each season that's carried on to another season. I think that's hilarious and great. It's just kind of weird. Uh our main characters are FBI agents and they can't recognize that they've seen these people before. [laughter] And then also left me intrigued for where the mythology narrative is headed.
I am. But what I what I will say on that is I don't really care about like oh what's the big overall answer? solution to this alien mythology narrative. It's like I know that the show is not going to just be like all right story's over like at any point. That's not what it's about to me.
Like it's about the journey not the destination. So I am interested in it but on a more so basis of each individual episode what are we getting?
You know let's see what the next step is. I'm not sitting here going it's been two seasons guys let's let's get to him finding aliens. It's like that's not what I want. I want the opposite of that actually.
>> Yeah. Once the mythology or what's going on with the government's found out, then it's over.
>> Yeah. It's like I want the tease. You know what I mean? That the tea, the fun is in the >> little breadcrumbs, little details where you give me a little bit more information, I'm able to theorize more in my head. Let me think. Let me find it out.
>> And it's done a great job with that. You know, doing a great job.
>> Uh Tim Nicarovs having the X-File shut down and being separated from Skully already put Moulder in a bad place. Now with her disappearance and Cratchek's betrayal is likely to send to an into a much darker place. At least we get another massive Skinner W reopening the X Files. You knew it was coming, but it still feels great to see it happen. I'm so glad that they just waited so [ __ ] long to do that. I already harped on it, but I totally expected episode two of this season. We're back, baby. But no, episode six and Skully's not even there.
[laughter] We're still going to make us wait to get Moulder and Scully back as if it's this big [ __ ] I don't know classic wrestling tag team that broke up for years and uh are the Hardy brothers gonna come back? Are they going to come back finally? And making us wait as long as possible and sort of feels like that.
Yeah. I love how it had gotten to the point where it almost felt like a like you kind of forgot like or you fel it just kind of felt like a forgotten thing of like hey by the way uh the Xbox was shut down by the way. Like I know they didn't forget, but what I'm saying is it was such a nonfocus in the show. It was just accepted reality to the point where it was like, "Okay, is this going to be the whole season? Like, what are we doing?" Where yeah, the first couple episodes I was asking. Xfiles is still shut down, by the way. But it got to the point where I stopped asking that cuz it just had been accepted. When he said that and pulled that out, I WAS LIKE, "OH, I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT at all." So, great job of uh, you know, doing it at a moment where I did not find it predictable whatsoever. It felt like the Avengers teaming up for the first time or something or the Avengers reuniting in [ __ ] Endgame or something. It's like let's go. [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The other one's not even there.
>> And uh Colin pointing this out. I hope this is true. Fun fact, David Avy did his own stunt for this episode. He is Tom Cruz.
>> Really? Wow. Yeah. I was kind of looking. I was looking in the uh the carriage. I mean, not that it would be a crazy stunt to just stand on a carriage, [laughter] but I can tell like Oh, yeah.
That's David right there. or even the car driving by in the parking lot as if because sometimes they do that where even driving in a car it's like a put the stunt table when there's no stunts.
Put a stunt double in there.
>> Yeah. Or but literally like hanging off the thing if that was him doing I'm sure he was strapped in and stuff but him doing that kudo. He is the OG Tom Cruz.
>> You know now I want to look it up. Hold on. When did Mission Impossible come out? 96.
96.
Yeah.
>> Oh, so and this was 95, right?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, no. We're still in '94 with XFiles.
This is October of '94.
>> Oh, then yeah, it was definitely Mhm.
>> But I mean, Tom Cruz, I mean, obviously the original Mission Impossible, I haven't seen the films, so I'm sure he does crazy stuff in the originals, but like in the 2000s films are when they really started like stepping up like what crazy stunt are we going to do this time with him? So, uh, but yeah, I'm being obviously facitious in that comparison, but it is funny. And they also are both kind of typical looking white guys, so it's it's funny in that regard, too.
>> Oh, this is interesting. TK, I love the clever use of the phone call and the teaser to recap and establish what we didn't see between episodes. Question: Did your copy say deny everything during the opening like it's supposed to? My first edition DVD wrongly says the truth is out there and I hope this was corrected for the Blu-ray. Yeah, it says deny everything. So, the DVD [ __ ] it up.
>> Yeah. Well, that doesn't surprise me.
Back in the day when they were probably releasing these original DVDs, get them out there. Typically with Blu-ray remasters with my limited experience of them, it seems that whenever they're being created, like I know a lot of times the studio doesn't really care, but it's like the people making the Blu-ray remaster seem to be people that care, you know what I mean?
So whether it's special features or whatever, they would probably pay attention to stuff like that. So yeah, it was correct. And it was correct for the season one finale. We just didn't realize it.
>> We just didn't realize it. So, uh, now the only thing I will say is we're right now I'm still we're still watching off of the season 2 like officially American released Blu-ray of this season back in like 2015. Uh, when they were doing the revival seasons um, they released these two first seasons, I'm guessing as promotion for that. There is nothing past this released in America. So, you have the full box set. That's the all region or whatever.
>> Yeah, I bought the all region Blu-ray. I had to take out a couple loans to buy that because God that [ __ ] thing.
>> So when I purchased that, you know, later this year or whenever for going into next season, I would hope that the same level of care and everything was put into remastering the whole season or series on Blu-ray, but I don't know yet.
>> Yeah, I ripped some episodes for some uh some edits and all that and looks fine.
So, but I haven't gotten to where we are now. So, >> yeah, one of my favorites. I think you would agree with that for yourself as well. Definitely for this season, but even overall, I would put it up there in the top tier of what we've seen so far.
And I'm super excited to what the hell next episode, it's got to be a truly molder episode. What do we do?
>> Yeah. Uh quick thing, uh eventually years down the line, we can do tier ris tier listings or ratings like best monster of the week episodes, best mythology episodes, and we can milk this forever. [laughter]
