This Could Be a Huge Problem for the Pond!

[00:00:06]Really? That went my flag. But yesterday, Houston was over here and he called me upset, worried, or I'm not going to say panicked because of something he saw on the dam. And uh it could be a disaster.

[00:02:04]It's my birthday. I'm uh 42 today. And uh what better way to start that off than taking my little buddy Earl and going to get a load of pigs out of a trap. Uh a group of pigs that wasn't expecting to catch. [laughter] DJ and I were just getting in bed last night and I got a notification from a pig trap and I thought, well, probably deer there again. Well, I was wrong. I think there's, don't get me lying, 11 or 13. I can't remember. I counted last night. Either way, uh it's a group of pigs that the land owner seen several times, but they have not been anywhere near that trap.

[00:02:46]Not at all, buddy, until last night. So, I'm going to grab a few buckets of corn so I can rebait and go load these girls and guys and girls up. Are you going to shake and be scared or are you going to be tough today?

[00:03:02]Huh? Can you be tough? Be brave. Okay.

[00:03:35]It's looking a a little stormy outside this morning. So, before I head off to go load those pigs, um you know, do you ever consider what would you do if the power went out and you had multiple freezers full of meat?

[00:04:52]While I'm driving into this place, I wanted to stop and share something with you guys. So, you know, I do a lot of uh land management, wildlife management, try to do everything I can to help native species, and trapping pigs is one of those things, but prescribed fire is another thing that I've done for years and a lot of land owners do. And uh this property is a prime example of something you don't see very often, and that is a warm season prescribed fire, a summertime burn. So, the landowner came in, they burned a lot of this last winter when the forage was dead, when the grass was dead. They had cut tons of cedar trees and stuff. And uh they came back this summer. Matter of fact, they came back this past week and did a growing season burn on the other side of this road. And I know a lot of folks don't understand a a growing season burn and why you would do that, but a lot of this place has been over the years probably been a little bit overg grazed and unmanaged. And the landowner is trying to take it back in a sense, take back control of of uh producing the most healthy environment for the wildlife, for the native species. And that includes whitetail deer, quail, turkeys, and uh removing feral pigs. We're not trying to help the feral pigs, but uh there's only so much they can do on some of this because it's so rough and rocky and like hang on, let me flip the camera around. Look out across there. This is this is just a a rough area. It's all rock. So, there's no way that you could, you know, brush hog or mow any of that.

[00:06:32]But that warm season growing season burn obviously I mean the grass is green but when it gets hot and dry it'll still burn and uh it's still dangerous but look look how many dead cedar trees you see now they you know that fire come in there and it heated a lot of those up.

[00:06:52]It may not have burned them to the ground. Some of those were dead before, but it killed a ton of I mean, even mature cedar trees, but there's no telling how many juvenile small 1 2 3 foot tall cedar trees that are a huge detriment to the environment. There's no telling how many of those it just completely destroyed. So, kudos to the landowner for doing a good job. I think it's amazing. And uh we get a few rains, this side will green up and the deer and turkeys and quail and everything will be in there scratching around, foraging, picking through the seeds and have a sanctuary to hide back into on this side.

[00:18:11]Well, got the pigs delivered and uh our storm clouds are burning off. our cloud cover in general is burning off and uh it's probably going to get warm, but decided to come check on the pond and uh I've got some projects here that I need to do on the dock. This dock is just the coolest little hangout spot, but it's a blank slate and uh there's no shade, there's just no chairs, there's no nothing except, you know, fish feeder.

[00:18:44]So, we might as well throw a little fish feed out. See how the bluegill are doing today.

[00:18:50]It's a little bit windy over here, so I don't know how well we'll be able to see them, but see what we can get to come up to eat.

[00:19:02]Oh, yeah. Fish are hungry as usual. We have not laid eyes on the two koi or the albino catfish. Would you Stop being so noisy. We have not laid eyes on the two koi or the albino catfish since we put them in here.

[00:19:22]Hopefully we will soon.

[00:19:26]Um maybe there are a ton of little bluegill in here still. I do have one major concern.

[00:19:34]And by major concern, I mean it could be a major problem.

[00:19:41]That was a big fish. What was that? Did you guys see it?

[00:19:48]We'll get back to the major concern in a minute. I love watching these fish, but I'm I'm really hoping to catch a glimpse of the koi over here one of these days or that big catfish. Usually catfish will come to the surface and they'll just, you know, they don't come up and just splash near as fast. But I'll get back to my major concern in a second. So, in the evenings, Houston loves to come over here and fish. And we we don't have a lot of fish in the pond yet. Well, let me rephrase that. We have millions of fish. We don't have a lot of catchable fish in the pond yet. But you guys have seen we come over in the evenings and catch some big bluegill, like palm size, hands size bluegill. And usually they're a little farther out from the dock, but we can come over and catch 10 or 12. And lately, Houston has been struggling to catch any of the bigger bluegill. Now, I don't know if that means they've dispersed around the pond. They're just not coming to the feed right now because they have so much natural forage. I don't know. But yesterday, Houston was over here and he called me upset, worried, I'm not going to say panicked because of something he saw on the dam. And uh it could be a disaster.

[00:21:05]We could have a huge problem. So, what did Houston see?

[00:21:09]Well, it's everywhere.

[00:21:14]And it's a scary thought because it's a little bit gross. But, do you see what I see here? There's a lot of a lot of scales. I think a lot of it is is crawfish.

[00:21:34]the croad um shells, but he was telling me he saw a lot of fish scales. And what I'm seeing right now is mostly crawfish in this manure. Now, there are fish scales in it. That's kind of gross. I know it is, but it is everywhere along this dam. And my concern there is what if what if the otter have found the pond?

[00:22:05]Um, more than likely a lot of that is raccoons that are finding crawfish along the shoreline and eating crawfish, but there are scales in it.

[00:22:16]And if if it's Oh, I heard thunder. I guess all the storms haven't dissipated. If we have otter in the pond, that is a total disaster. We do know for a fact that there are otter in the creek. And the creek is only a few hundred yards from here. And it's very possible when it floods, otter could follow these little drainages up and find a unlimited buffet of fish in this pond. and a family of otter could wipe the fish out of this pond in a couple weeks. So, I'm going to walk around the pond. I'm going to do some studying, look some look at some of this manure a little closer. Right now, I think I think it's raccoons eating crawfish, but I'm going to put up some game cameras around the pond just to verify because it would be guys having otter in this pond would be a total disaster. like it would be clean slate, start over again because otter eat that much. And obviously we know it's not cleaned out.

[00:23:23]We can still see fish.

[00:23:25]But the fact that Houston's not catching those big bluegill like he was is a scary thought.

[00:23:37]See places like this right here along these logs. I would expect if we have otter, I would expect them to get up on these logs and there would be dead fish remains, scales from their manure. I'm not seeing anything anywhere else around the pond right now. So, that gives me a little hope and a little comfort in not seeing any uh other otter manure.

[00:24:05]But, I'm definitely going to be putting up some game cameras. I'm watching the next several nights around the dock and the spillway over there where all that scaly manure is because I don't want otter in this pond. That that scares me.

[00:24:21]Okay, so back on the subject of the uh the dock being a clean slate. I've actually been uh making a few purchases and uh I have a few things that I need to go set up on the dock. I need to put them together here first, but we don't have anywhere to sit. We don't have any kind of shade. And I've also been kicking around the idea of what if we put a big solar light on the dock to use, not necessarily for light for us above, but to draw bugs in right above the water to feed the fish, like free food because there are millions of bugs out there flying around. So, I've been on Amazon, done a little shopping. Um, got a big giant patio umbrella, and I've got to find a way, well, not find a way, I bought a way to mount it, and a pretty cool looking uh convertible bench. So, got some assembly to do real quick.

[00:25:24]So, here's the bench. Converts into a table somehow. half bench, half table.

[00:25:31]We'll see. Really, I think it just tilts. You just tilt the back of that.

[00:25:35]You can actually put two of them together and make a full picnic table, but this is all I have. So, bench when you want it, flip that up for a table when you need it.

[00:27:32]That was pretty simple. Secured a couple pieces of angle iron to the frame of the of the uh bench and then screwed it down to the frame of the dock. Now we've got a nice secure place to sit while we're hanging out on the dock and a perfect place to do other things. Whether I could bring my computer over here and edit a video if I wanted to or uh clean fish.

[00:28:06]Throw your fish right off in the water after you're done. Perfect. Now I just need some shade because I don't know if you could tell, but it's hot.

[00:28:18]Now I'm a little I bought a bracket.

[00:28:22]Don't get me wrong. I bought a bracket to make uh to mount a umbrella to.

[00:28:29]I'm just unsure about it because I don't know if it's going to work.

[00:28:39]So, I bought this bracket that your umbrella pole slides down into. It's made to mount uh on a dock, but it's really made to mount under like inside of a dock. So, you would mount it, you know, underneath and come up flush underneath and come up flush with your floor. And I think it this is fine. I think this is a good idea. I'm just not sure if I don't I definitely don't want to drill into my floats, but the top of the floats are right here. I think [clears throat] mounting it just like that. Where you guys at? I think mounting it just like that would be just fine. And I brought some selftapping metal screws to go into that. And I think that would do good. I just wish there was a a 2x4 behind that.

[00:29:33]So, the the bench I was able to secure down into the actual frame, the actual subframe down here. This is kind of thin, but I may try it out. I wish the the back of that bench or the back of that table stuck out farther than the top cuz I could put the bracket down there and then secure the pole to that and I wouldn't have to worry as much.

[00:29:56]And I've even thought about just setting an umbrella down in the top of one of those pipe, but uh the wind will still get it and the kids won't be able to take it out of there, take it down and secure it. So, I don't know. We're going to try that.

[00:30:10]That way I have an umbrella mounted right next to the bench and we'd have some shade hopefully.

[00:30:51]and my umbrella will tilt towards whichever way I need it to tilt.

[00:30:59]So, I could actually move it over closer to the the bench. Now, I did put a screw in the bottom of that bracket because this is made so that if the wind catches it, there we go. And now it's locked into place. It's made so if the wind catches it, your pole, your actual umbrella pole won't come out. I can twist it and secure it in there. Can't pull that out right now, but I could scoot it over closer. But my thought was my daughter likes to come over here and hang out and her friends sometimes. There's a lot of shade off the back of the dock right now. But I don't have a way to mount it down in the dock, but they like to come over here and if they want to bring a lounge chair or lawn chair or something, they can uh have shade. can also tilt the umbrella, you know, so that it blocks more sun.

[00:31:53]But overall, [laughter] I like it. We've got shade on the dock. Now, I do have one more thing I want to mount, and it's that it's a very big LED light. And my thought, my original thought was mounted off the front of the dock out towards deeper water. But this thing is um it's big. So, I bought all this stuff on Amazon. The bench came from Amazon. I can leave a link in the description box if anybody's interested in a convertible bench. This LED light that I've got. I may end up mounting it on one of my pipe came with a pipe mount. I think it might be more secure because it's it's huge.

[00:32:43]All right, hang on. I mean, I've got a big head, but uh this thing is huge. And I thought my original plan was to mount it, you know, like this hanging off the dock because I want more light down by the water. But, uh I think it's going to be way too much weight on that little thin metal that I just screwed my umbrella into. You know, the umbrella I think will be fine. I'm trying to lay this down without messing it up. The umbrella I think will be fine because it's only going to be up when we're here. When we're gone, we'll put the umbrella down, put the strap around it, and uh it's not got a not going to have a lot of stress pushing on that bracket and that thin uh C channel. But I think I'll mount the light to one of these pipe and it won't be going anywhere.

[00:33:51]Also, don't know if you can tell, but it's starting to rain just a little bit. Not a lot.

[00:34:20]So, I don't want to put it all the way down here because my dock floats up and down with the rains.

[00:34:26]But I don't want it way up in the air cuz I'm not trying to light up the dock necessarily.

[00:34:33]If this thing's half as bright as it should be. Heck, it may light everything up out here. But I'm going to tighten it down some more.

[00:34:42]Kind of spin it out over the water more.

[00:34:44]I don't want I mean, the main goal here is to attract bugs, right? So, I don't want bugs on the dock.

[00:35:34]Yo, this is this is like next level dream stuff for me. Um I I can you know, every time I come over here to this Oh, here comes the rain.

[00:35:46]It's coming down a little heavier. Every time I come over here to the pond, I I reminisce on what the pond used to be and how much work went into building it.

[00:35:54]And now here I sit under an umbrella in a summertime rain shower on a 4acre pond sitting on a cool little convertible bench on my dock.

[00:36:08]This is happiness. I love it.

[00:36:11]It's hot, don't get me wrong. Sweating like a crazy person, but I wouldn't have it any other way. having just a little bit of shade over here, even if it is to stop a little bit of rain, even though I got my truck door open. Um, it's a good feeling. I'm happy. Now, I will have to come back after dark and uh check that light out, show it to you guys probably because uh it should be extremely bright. And I do keep feeding the fish feeder. It goes off about four times a day. As you can see, there's hundreds of bluegill and sunfish and things coming up to eat. But, uh, I think having that light to attract bugs that would fall in the water would be a excellent additional food source to help feed uh, the fish and uh, not cost any money outside the cost of the light itself.

[00:37:03]And it's solar powered, so it's not I don't have to have electricity over here. So, it's a good day.

[00:37:40]but may just need to be turned on. I've got a remote that came with it and they didn't see any batteries. So, we'll see if the ones I found are any good. See if we can get it to turn on.

I can set it for automatic, come on for 3 hours, 5 hours, or 8 hours. But obviously, it's got a photo cell to uh >> Oh, these bugs are already making me mad. I've swallowed a few in my nose already.

[00:38:31]>> It The goal here is We went dim. Here we go. The goal here is a bright light to attract the bugs to hit the water to feed the fish.

[00:38:52]>> Well, can't see Houston over there, but the pond light keeps going dim. It did not charge all day.

[00:39:01]>> Turn on and off like >> Yeah. I don't I don't know. I need to read the manual, but it is definitely attracting bugs already.

[00:39:10]And all I have to do is push the button and it comes back to bright. But, you know, if you put that up high, it would light up this whole dock. For sure.

[00:39:23]>> We do have plenty of bugs. We just got off the lake, by the way. That's why Houston doesn't have a shirt on. He's choking on bugs. How you like my bench?

[00:41:44]>> Well, there you have it. got uh several good improvements done to the dock. And I think I mean I've I've fished around lights like that on docks before. We got one just a few miles down the road at the lake. You guys have seen us fish there in the past multiple times. And uh once the bait fish start finding the bugs, then the predators find the bait fish. And it's just a a cycle. It's just free fish food in my opinion. And uh I think we'll get a lot of good use out of the the bench and the umbrella. And uh I'm happy. I'm excited about it. The uh the pond is really coming together. And to top it off, the icing on the cake is uh we caught 11 more pigs this morning or last night and loaded them this morning. So successful day.

[00:42:32]Think I had a good birthday. We uh loaded the whole family up. All the everybody, our kids and Dusty and Marissa and their DJ and Dusty's mom and stepdad and Katie and her boyfriend. We all went to the lake and cooked hamburgers and surf for a couple hours.
