Severe Flooding in Tuxtla Gutierrez Chiapas Mexico as Torrential Rain Turns Streets Into RiversAdded:
Heavy rain that poured throughout the night into Wednesday morning transformed Tuxla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas, Mexico, into a scene of chaos and destruction.
Major streets turned into raging rivers of muddy water. Vehicles were swept away by powerful currents and residents scrambled to find safety as thunderstorms continued to strike the city. In the areas around Third West Street and Fourth North Street, downtown Tuxla came to a complete standstill.
Flash floods rapidly surged through the streets, dragging several vehicles with them. Videos recorded by residents showed cars trapped in strong currents while drivers desperately tried to escape. Others were forced to remain stranded on sidewalks waiting for the storm to weaken.
Mexico's National Water Commission warned that the storm system moving across Tukla Gutierrez could produce extremely intense rainfall of 20 to 25 mm every 30 minutes for the next 2 hours. Wind gusts exceeding 50 km hour and frequent lightning strikes further worsened conditions.
Authorities urged residents to avoid flood-prone areas and limit travel unless absolutely necessary. In the Potina Spack and Shanka neighborhoods, streets became dangerous streams of mud and debris. Food stands owned by local residents were damaged by fastmoving runoff waters. Meanwhile, residents in Linda Vista Shanka grew increasingly concerned as the Sabinol River rose significantly and threatened to overflow at any moment. Civil protection teams continued monitoring the river around the clock.
The severe weather was not limited to Tuxa alone. In Okosingo, heavy rain mixed with hail battered communities during the afternoon. In Kitan, flooding submerged several major roads after the effects of tropical storm. two intensified weather conditions across the mountainous and coastal regions of Chiapas.
Similar scenes were reported in other parts of Mexico. Along the Talaxala Apisako Federal Highway, traffic came to a near halt due to hail storms and dangerously low visibility. In Lano Largo, the Kayako Puerto Marquees Highway was completely flooded once again exposing the vulnerability of local infrastructure to extreme weather events that have repeatedly struck the region since Hurricane Otis.
Amid the chaos, dramatic lightning strikes illuminated the mountainous region between Chiapas and Guatemala, adding to the fear and tension felt by residents.
Security cameras captured repeated flashes, lighting up the night sky while relentless rain continued to fall.
Now the people of Tukla Gutierrez can only hope the storm weakens soon. For many residents, however, this disaster serves as another painful reminder that the city remains highly vulnerable to increasingly frequent and more destructive extreme weather events each year.
