This video explains how high pressure systems create sinking, compressing air that warms and dries the atmosphere, leading to heat waves and elevated fire danger. The meteorologist describes how temperatures in New Mexico are expected to reach 100°F+ in some areas, with red flag warnings issued for Farmington, Durango, and Cortez due to high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds (30-50 mph gusts). The forecast also predicts a backdoor front will bring cooler temperatures and increased rain chances later in the week, demonstrating how weather systems evolve and how meteorologists assess fire danger based on temperature, humidity, and wind conditions.

Heat moves in to New Mexico before storm chances later in the week
Added:All right, Ryan. Everyone's okay after yesterday's tiny storm. I felt like I only got a little a few sprinkles on the west side.
>> Yeah, and some other thunderstorm activity in other areas as well, including Angel Fire.
So, yeah, a little bit of rain in Albuquerque, a bit more rainfall and by the way, Santa Fe, we had almost an inch of rain in 30 minutes. In Angel Fire, look at the reduced visibility yesterday as temperatures dropped into the low 50s. You could see Wheeler Peak misty yesterday with some low-hanging clouds, upper-level clouds as well, signifying a lot of moisture in the air. We reached the low 70s, but then yet again, another thunderstorm came through before sunset.
And speaking of sunset, look at the pink, purple, magenta colors on the underbellies of those cirrostratus clouds, those high-level layered clouds.
Still pretty dark out there this morning. We're just getting slightly bright enough to see the mountain shadings out there. Some clouds out there. 33°, 95% humidity, but generally, we're mostly pretty clear. So, chilly in Angel Fire, I think it may drop to right around 30 this morning. Sneaky cold this morning. Sneaky chilly Alamosa, 44. 51 Durango. Meanwhile, we're sitting at nearly at 60° in Santa Rosa, 68 in Albuquerque, 58 Santa Fe. Around 60 Ruidoso. Mid-upper 70° temperatures around Alamogordo, around the White Sands missile range area.
48 right now in Grants, 57 Farmington, 71 in Silver City. We had thunderstorms earlier in Carlsbad. They've left behind high dew point temperatures in the low 60s with air temperatures close to those dew points, pretty high humidity. And look at that dew point at 48 in Albuquerque. So, a little bit higher out east this morning. In Farmington, dew point of 20, but that human air will regress back to the east later today.
Again, some areas a little bit humid, more humid this morning for some, but I think out west, we're starting to dry out a little bit more. We do notice those thunderstorms exiting and dissipating from southeast New Mexico into west Texas. Surrounding the periphery of this high pressure sink system, that sinking compressing air mass will really be in place, will heat up, will dry out this afternoon.
Leftover moisture will will yield some thunderstorm activity in perhaps the Oregon mountains, the southern Capitan mountains, eventually southwest, southeast New Mexico for spotty areas elsewhere mostly sunny today. 97 the forecast high in Albuquerque, 80s Alamosa and Raton, low 90s Santa Fe, near 90 Roswell and or actually near 100, excuse me, near Roswell and Carlsbad. Near 90 by the way by I would say at lunchtime. 100° the forecast high at least in Deming. The Tops are back in town as they take on the Sugar Land Space Cowboys for your 6:35 first pitch right around 94°. Very sunny, hotter, becoming a little bit breezy toward the end of the game as winds may be more than 20 mph late in the day. Before then, not too bad.
Farmington, Cortez, Durango, 30 to 45 mph wind gusts from the north and west elevating that fire threat with the warmth today and even gustier winds.
Farmington, Durango, TRC to Albuquerque and Santa Fe tomorrow. Look at those westerly winds gusting between 30 to close to 50 mph. Fire weather watches tomorrow for the Rio Grande Valley, parts of east and the southern Rio Grande Valley for tomorrow. Red flag warnings for today for Farmington, Durango, Cortez and parts of the San Luis Valley. An extreme heat watch for tomorrow. Roswell and Dexter. A few areas may be close to 110, 111° tomorrow. Please make sure you guys drink plenty of water, stay in the shade. Yeah, a forecast high right around 110 tomorrow in Roswell, near 100 in Albuquerque potentially for the first time this season. Upper 90s Santa Fe, low 90s Alamosa. But, a back door front will slide on through cooling things off drastically in the northeast plains bringing in more low-level moisture after the warm-up on Thursday afternoon compared to the morning, thunderstorm activity will be more widespread in parts of the Rio Grande Valley to East New Mexico, but mostly East New Mexico in the mountains, and even cooler Friday and Saturday, even parts of the Four Corners, but still with breezy conditions, that fire threat still will be prevalent for some with still dry air in even in Alamosa, Farmington, Gallup, and Cuba. Temperatures in the 90 to a close to 100° range for today in through Thursday. In Socorro, Glenwood, and Deming, high 90s and triple digits, so very warm. Again, please take it easy outside out there. Very sunny today in Cloudcroft, upper 70s, near 100 today in Carlsbad, near 110 tomorrow there as well as in Roswell, at least for a couple areas potentially.
Tucumcari, Mora, and Capulin, upper 80s and 90s today, even hotter tomorrow, but a backdoor front will bring in the better rain chances and cooler air late in the week. Red River, Española, and Santa Fe, bring on the heat, but then bring on the storm chances late in the week. Moriarty, Socorro, Cedar Crest, high 80s and 90s from the north to south valley of Albuquerque, reaching the mid to upper 90s. We could see some of our highest temperatures of the season today, but then it's only going to be hotter tomorrow. A forecast high of 70 100°.
But then cooler after that.
Yep, buckle up. First day of summer follows day, Sunday. [clears throat] >> preparing for that 100. That's brutal.
>> Yeah.
>> Yesterday morning, it wasn't even noon yet, and I was like, "Oh my gosh, it's already so hot."
>> Yeah, [laughter] it's getting that time of year, right?
>> Yeah. All right, thanks, Ryan.
