Mitochondrial dysfunction can precede cancer development through three main pathways: continuous carbohydrate consumption without breaks prevents mitochondrial recovery, poor light hygiene disrupts circadian rhythm and melatonin production (which protects mitochondria against reactive oxygen species), and improper fat proportions in cell membranes interfere with nutrient and energy transport; addressing these factors through intermittent fasting, proper light hygiene, and balanced fat intake may help prevent mitochondrial damage and reduce cancer risk.

These Routes to Mitochondrial Injury Precede Cancer | Thomas Seager, PhDAdded:
When you get a cancer diagnosis, you're going to deal with that. What can you do before the diagnosis? You got to take care of your metabolism. And so, we've talked about that. Carbohydrates themselves [music] are not evil, so to speak, but you have to give your body a rest from the carbohydrates. So, that might be intermittent fasting. There are several pathways that will damage your mitochondria. [music] One of them is there's no break from carbohydrates ever. And so, your mitochondria never have that recovery [music] time the mitobiogenesis. There are two more. You get your light hygiene out of whack. Too much blue light at night. Too much of any type [music] of light at night. Your circadian rhythm is messed up. And this will interfere with your melatonin production. Now, mitochondria make their own melatonin. [music] Melatonin is how they protect themselves against reactive oxygen species. The melatonin give up electrons to these [music] reactive oxygen species before the DNA become damaged. And so, having your melatonin in the right place by taking care of your light hygiene, very important. The third one is seed oils.
People fail to recognize cuz they just haven't been told that fats are an important building block. Fats play a material role inside the body. We're all taught about how many calories [music] fat has as if that was only energy. But it is fat that all of your cell membranes are made [music] up. And when you give your body the wrong proportion of fats, then your membranes are made of the wrong type of fat molecules. This interferes [music] with transport of nutrients and energy across those cell membranes. So, you can mess up your mitochondria with too many carbs without a break, poor light hygiene, too many seed oils in your diet.
