The attack destroyed the American fleet, but not the aircraft carriers. They were at sea. Nor did it destroy the oil depots. The Japanese chose not to bomb them. Without oil, the Pacific Fleet would have been paralyzed for a year. Yamamoto called this the operation's main mistake.
