Tesla FSD Supervised can't make up its mind in Ghent 🇧🇪 (v14.2.2.6)
Added:should not stop for Oh, yeah. Because it's orange now.
But even though that cyclist was ready, we had a green light. So, probably FSD would have continued.
It's already blinking to merge into the left lane here.
Not a lot of traffic behind us, so that's okay.
Okay, that was just before the solid line.
Moving to the right next to the bridge because we need to go under it.
needing to go left. It's going to let that car pass. It's going to go in front of it. Really?
And now it's orange. We shouldn't be going anymore.
Let's see.
We are past the traffic light, so we could go theoretically, but I don't really think it's safe anymore, but still it's going. So, yeah, bit of a tricky situation.
Also notice that when cars are coming from the other side and you have to cross each other in the other direction, then often it will uh actually try to go behind the car instead of in front of it.
And legally that is what in most cases you need to do, but a lot of people don't do that. And personally, I'm also a fan of crossing in front. I find that to be a lot safer. But uh yeah, so earlier on we came here from the other side. So we're driving back to the big roundabout and taking another exit there.
That was a slight break for no apparent Yeah.
Here it needs to stop again. So I wondered if it will actually stop at the stop sign. Do a complete full stop.
Yeah, it is stopping again to zero and then continuing and then it needs to stop here again to see what is coming.
So that first stop was a bit unnecessary, but the second one at the uh stop line was definitely needed.
Nice Jaguar.
Okay. Needs to watch out for the cyclists. It's doing that perfectly.
And now it's waiting for some oncoming traffic from the left.

And now it has room to go. Well, it that car here, the blue one, was blinking, but then it decided to turn or to not turn off the roundabout.
So now we're going to the other train station in Gent, the big one or the second big one which I passed already when uh coming here before we started the trip and it has also an interesting traffic situation which if you're driving here for the first time isn't necessarily always that clear.
But FSD handled it like a champ. So, let's see if it does that again.
Not a lot of traffic here now. Maybe, as I said, the rain scared people away a little bit, even though it has cleared already, so it was not that big of a shower.
or maybe just people thinking it's too hot to uh be outside. It's still 30° inside the city. More it was like 34 earlier.
And we Belgians are definitely not used to those uh temperatures.
Should go. Yep.
Slight hesitation on green compared to what I'm used to.
Usually it immediately wh this was quite undecisive which lane it wanted to take. Was funny.
Evently eventually it did choose the right lane but still it should not be this undecisive.
So here you see the layout of this roundabout. So we need to get on it and then um take the first one.
And then we're coming back from that Vshape on the right. We're coming back from the other side and then we have to turn where that forbidden sign was pointing to.
Okay, it's going to the exit lane for the roundabout.
Needs to turn in here. Second one again.
Some hesitation. It doesn't quite know where to go and it actually did not take the correct exit. It needed to take the one beyond the one that we took.
But that's fine. We'll find a way or the car will find a way to get back on track. Yeah, those roads that are very close together, they are really a challenge for FSD.
Still waiting for those people on the right. Really?
They were just walking parallel to the road still and FSD just gave them the time to get to the crosswalk.
So here it cannot pass the cyclist.
Doesn't have the room to do so.
This is an interesting one. This is a bicycle street where we cannot pass any cyclists and the speed is limited to 30 km an hour. But we're already in a 30 km an hour zone.
But MSD is going to use it to do a little detour to get back to the point where we started. This is quite a steep one. Please slow down.
Yep. Very carefully.

Again, the road is bad. The surface.
What will it do here? We have an oncoming car. It's going to leave room for the car to dive into this little street here to make room for us.
Perfect.
This is textbook driving from FSD.
Now we need to turn to the right again.
It really sees pedestrians really really early.

Oh, here we have an interesting situation.
Yeah, MSD is properly waiting for the emergency vehicle and only now continues to drive past this parked vehicle.
Awesome.
should still learn to drive around potholes more.
The speeds are low, so it's not that bad to drive through them, but at higher speeds, this would not be good for your wheels.
So, we need to go to the right here, but there's a lot of traffic coming from the left.
Yeah, one more car.
A brother from another model, another Tesla.
Nice to slightly go to the left here into a tiny street.
And then a little up ahead, we're going to turn around to get back into this street and get to our final destination for this trip.
Car is parking there.
Will SD go past it or not? It's waiting for now. Yeah, didn't take long, so that's just fine.
So, editing our final destination. Oh, it's going the other way around.
Uh, No, it's not what we want.
Yeah. Let's see where we end up.
I wanted to go straight on for a little bit, but um No, I don't want to go there.
set it. Yes, I know. I was setting uh the waypoint.
So, yeah, definitely the driver attention monitoring system is really harsh. uh you get about two to three seconds before it starts screaming at you that you need to pay attention.
So that does not leave enough room to actually change anything in on the screen in time before. Uh so you have to look back to the screen, back to the road, and yes, of course, you need to pay attention to the road, but you also need to be able to look at what your destination is saying and what route the car is taking.
Quite a rough road here.

Okay. Curve wasn't that high and wasn't really that close either, so that's fine.

This road is so narrow that I didn't realize it was a two-way street.
So now it was actually kind of in the way for that cyclist if she would have gone straight on.
I think I'm going to go So, this is a little bit of a bigger road. That cyclist is on the road. It should be on the cycle path.
And here we are turning left to make a little detour to get back onto this road here.

What are they going to do? They're not looking this way.
But Evans D showed them anyway or gave them way anyway.

And it is really slowing down.
Barely touched it.
those are actually not legal. Um if the those traffic plateaus if they are angled correctly, you hardly need to slow down for them.
So most of the time they are angled too steep, but you definitely want don't want to be driving a Ferrari or a Kings or anything like that. No, I'm going to overtake here. This is way too steep.
It's not really a fault of FSD that part uh because it's very difficult to see how steep that was from a camera point of view.
So I had to take over that which is fine because it is FSD supervised which means it makes mistakes. It does things that you would not do probably.
Sometimes it will speed in the Netherlands. It does not ever want to speed in Belgium.
And sometimes it doesn't see how steep a uh traffic plateau actually is. And then well, you have to take over. That's that's your job as the supervisor.
Some people just say that is FSD. They treat FSD as if it's a level four system where you don't have to pay attention, where you don't have to do anything anymore. But that is definitely not the case. It is still level two with driver. Oh my god, that guy nearly hit me because I was not paying attention at all.
We dodged that bullet. Oh my god.
People really need to pay attention to their surrounding.
So here we have a situation where it's called literal translation would be squared green where All the crosswalks have green at the same time and instead of me having to wait for a pedestrian or a cyclist coming from behind, uh they have a red light now and they were um interference free, should I call it like that, to cross in any direction uh before cars were going onto the intersection.
I think it's quite a good solution. It doesn't really add that much of waiting time to a traffic light and it keeps pedestrians and cyclists a lot safer from unattentive people.
So there's a short split off and it's doing that correctly.

So, from this street, we're driving uh straight onto a tram stop section in front of that roundabout we passed earlier on.
And there we also have to make a short lane shift or lane change to get into the correct lane to then finally get to our final destination which also has like a new traffic situation with the road that is being closed off and you have you are forced to turn. But uh as I look at it, the GPS already is aware of that situation.
But as you can see, a wide open road and my Model S is not taking the 30 km an hour. It's staying just below that.
And as I said at the beginning, the Model Y that my wife is driving would go that 30 on this road.
So, something is behaving differently in the different car models. And of course, there's a lot more Model Y's and Model 3s than there are Model S's. So, potentially, it is indeed, as I suspect, a training data issue.
Wow. So, those people were behind that van and FSD was already slowing down for them.
Wow.
Sometimes it seems what FSD is doing, it just feels like magic.
The way it sees things that we don't see. Will it let the car go in front?
That's nice.
Was not needed to do that because we had the priority on this road.
So here is that uh bus stop and we need to actually go a little bit further. We cannot drive onto these sections but we need to queue behind those cars here.
It should also not be standing still on those uh squares, the white squares here. And FSD is properly waiting, sees the cars moving and only then enters the intersection.
It kind of coincides with here it goes to left. Yes, because we need to go straight on. Chosen the right lane and here it needs to go to the right.
squeeze in between a car and this fan. It's doubting a little bit. It's waiting. It's waiting.
Come on. Turn. Turn. Turn.
It's not turning.
So, it was blinking to the right. No, don't tell me it is going to be turning here. I'm going to turn off the blinker.
Now, I'm curious what it will do because the GPS tells me it wants to go right. I hope it definitely does not want to turn right here behind this traffic light.
But now it has no route anymore. So what will it do?
It is just going to drive straight on.
Okay, interesting.
It will get us to our destination just as well. But this was not intended. And when I came here first before we started, the car was actually taking that intersection properly.
So, shall we do that again?
Let's see if you can find if we can get back to here.

So, let's see if we can drive back to that intersection and do it again.
Some traffic coming.
And after this next one we can go it has become quite a bit busier it seems.
or it's moving out of the way for those cyclists that wanted to pass us. So, it's leaving room for others to pass us while we need to drive slower because of traffic in front of us. That's nice.
So, we're coming back onto that uh earlier roundabout, and we're just going to see. Well, let's give it a second chance to take the correct exit where it failed the first time. If it fails again, I will intervene this time to get to the correct road that we need to get into.
Some cars coming, but this lane is actually clear.
Not anymore.
Right. Nice.
Immediately crosses into the middle lane. So that's why it didn't go onto the roundabout when I said the that the outer lane was cleared.
I think that is nice because for me I would have gone on there and then I would have doubted here. Okay, I'm not in the correct lane and FSD knows this city better than I do. So here it needs to go to the right behind this car. case. Go, go, go, go, go, go.
Very last minute. And of course, it was too late to be able to go into that earlier road and automatically it is in the correct one.
So, it kind of redeemed itself a little bit, but it should dive into the correct lane earlier.
Waiting for that cyclist. Another cyclist coming both from the left and from the right.
Pedestrian crossing.
Nicely done. As usual, FSD is really good with pedestrians and cyclists.
Quick, quick, quick, quick. Done. So, that was quick enough. Yeah. Should go left here. We had to modify our route quite quickly to not get too much of a detour. Whoa.
Oh, oh, oh, oh. What are you doing? What are you doing? FSD, you need to be there. Come on. Nope. You're not allowed to drive there.
FSD was driving in the bus lane where it cannot drive.
So yeah, when I intervene, I usually take some snapshots to provide the data to Tesla because that's of course the only way that they can learn from it.
Again, same thing. So this is consistent. It is not going onto those white squares while the cars in front of me, well, they were potentially blocking a bus that was going to come there.
Okay, let's see if traffic is different now. Needs to go in the left lane here or the middle lane. Yep, doing that just fine.
Again, there is a little bit of traffic, but it needs to go to the right. It needs to go to the right. Come on, Tesla. You can do it. You can do it.
And now it's going to the right.
So, probably it didn't see a gap that was big enough earlier to squeeze in.
And instead of waiting, it chose to drive an alternate route. That's interesting to say the least.
But still, the way it went into that turning lane, it was still not decisive enough. Sometimes the car squeezes in in tight places and sometimes for some reason it's uh yeah it's not doing that.
Also there was a sign that 30 km an hour started here and the sub signs are not read or not interpreted and it slows down already from that point.

Yep. Leaving enough room. And here you can see that the road is actually closed up ahead and it just needs to go left and left again.
But since this is a GPS known route, yeah, of course it has no issues with it. It's being careful here to see if there's no oncoming traffic.
