How to Get Customers Without Being Salesy

[00:00:00]Then when you solve the problem of sales, you end up with what I like to think of as magnetic marketing.

[00:00:10]And a I like thinking of it in that way because it's illiterative. Magnetic marketing is sounds cool. Uh but also I like the word magnetic because it implies like really what you're doing with marketing and sales is you're not trying to shove something down someone's throat. This was my worry when it came to selling stuff. Oh my god, I don't want to be sleazy. I don't want to be salesy.

[00:00:31]But magnetic marketing is when you're putting stuff out there that is somewhat educational in nature and the right kind of clients, the right kind of customers are being magnetically attracted to your orbit by virtue of the stuff that you put out there.

[00:00:46]There are only really three ways to get customers. Only three. You can either post content, you can pay money to run ads, or you can spend loads of time doing one-on-one outreach. Literally just three. only three ways to get customers. So sometimes we get the question of like, oh, I want to get financial freedom, but I don't want to put my face out there on the internet. I don't want to do content. I hate social media. I was like, okay, so you're deleting one of the two one of the three methods of of being able to get customers. Which is fine. You could totally build a business if you had money to run ads. And if you're selling a expensive enough thing, it could be totally reasonable for you to just do one-on-one outreach. For example, Dan, who is my our current like web master and like legal finance, HR and everything head who keeps me out of jail with all of the tax kind of stuff that he he makes sure we are compliant on.

[00:01:29]Dan side hustles as helping helping people sort of improve the conversion rates on their website so they can make more money. That's an offer that Dan could sell for $5,000 a month. Now, in that case, when you're selling a $5,000 a month thing, you don't need that many clients to have a sixfig lifestyle business. You need like two or three.

[00:01:45]Like, that's it. And then you have a sixfig lifestyle business. And so you don't need like Dan was saying over lunch, man. Alli, I really don't want to do social media. I [ __ ] hate LinkedIn, you know, I don't want to be cringe. And I'm like, Dan, you know what? When you're selling something for 5K, you actually don't need to do social media content marketing. You can totally just do warm outreach. You can just reach out to people, send emails and stuff. And if you're into that, all you need is three clients and now you have your six figure lifesty business because you are charging $5,000 a month. But if you're charging $5 or $10 or $20 or $50 for something, it's very hard to get the customers you want through warm outreach or even cold outreach. It's probably annoying. Most people's dream, most people don't dream about sending cold emails. And so unless you have money to spend, you're either going to then then in which case you run ads, you're kind of going to have to do the content thing. Almost every successful business is doing content in some capacity. If you're not doing content, you're kind of leaving a lot of money on the table. And it's also quite fun and you can find a way to do that's fun. And so then that becomes like magnetic marketing.

[00:02:38]Basically, three methods of content, ads, and outreach. And then there's a fourth which is sort of like a middle of the funnel thing as they call it, which is sort of email marketing.

[00:02:47]um content, ads, outreach, and emails.

[00:02:50]Just four skills. And you don't even have to do the I've never done outreach personally because, you know, I was always not a fan of that. And we also don't really run many ads. Like you can get by with just the content thing, but you can sort of supercharge it if you do content plus ads. Maybe if if you do a little bit of outreach and a little bit of email marketing, it's it's just all of these skills just sort of stack on top of each other. And so another thing that I often hear people worry about is like h I don't want to waste time pursuing the wrong idea or pursuing the wrong niche. Like what if I waste time?

[00:03:17]It's like you're not wasting time. Think of it as investing time in your education. Every time you try something, even if it doesn't work, you are learning skills. And those skills stack up over time. I was making websites for like $5 an hour back when I was 13. I had no idea that those same skills would I would still be using in 2025 when we're looking at like our WordPress installations to see how we can how we can make more revenue from our courses and how we can streamline our website.

[00:03:40]It's like you just never know where the skills are going to be helpful. But by doing stuff and stacking up the skills, you and doing it for a long enough time, you eventually end up in a very good place. And then when you connect the dots looking backwards, you're like, damn, that random [ __ ] that I learned.

[00:03:54]There's an example from Steve Jobs where he randomly did a typography class when he was in college and then like 20 years later when he got fired from Apple and came came back in and they were designing the interface for like the Mac or whatever, the typography was the thing that really stood out because he took this random typog typography class like 30 years in the past. So you just never know when the skills that you learn are going to come in handy. So you go from having a problem with sales to magnetic marketing through content, ads, emails, and maybe outreach if you really feel like it.
