Summer heat takes Portland towards the holiday weekend

[00:00:02]>> Yeah. All right, Josh. We're getting ready to go into a a big weekend. We got the Multnomah County Fair. We have City Fair. Lots of things going on for this weekend. And the weather should be okay.

[00:00:14]>> It will. It will feel kind of summery out there for us as this is the unofficial start to the summer season.

[00:00:20]And we're really kicking things off with some really warm temperatures across the I-5 corridor. Even along the coast, well above average. All thanks to the abundant sunshine we have been enjoying with just a few fair weather cumulus clouds above our heads out towards the high terrain of the Cascades and that marine layer for parts of the coast. All as we still stay persistent in the low to mid 80s through the I-5 corridor. And this is very typical for this time of year. May 7th is when we typically get our first round of 80° highs. Fast forward to June 17th, about a month or so away, that's when we start to see 90s creep back into our forecast. But we've been keeping track of the high heat.

[00:00:55]Already a day in the 90° range earlier this month when we average about 15 every year. And as far as the 80° temperatures, already four in the bank including today when on average during the summer season we see just about 61 days in the 80s. All as our cloud-free skies are widespread across our area.

[00:01:13]Less than ideal when we are talking about our drought scenario, but the good news is with this latest issued drought monitor, it's issued every Thursday, we have seen some stability across our region. So still abnormally dry for the Portland-Vancouver area. Unfortunately, extreme drought still persists over the southern Cascades of Oregon as our fire weather danger goes hand in hand with the drought seeing those dials at the low to moderate levels. Improvements tonight, tomorrow, we put things back in place where they are currently as thankfully our air quality continues to steer clear of any pollutants with the exception of the higher pollen counts.

[00:01:49]So keep that allergy medication close to hand as we return to the moderate to high category all the way through Monday. I anticipate as we move our way into next week, we'll start to see those numbers come down slightly as some free water comes back to our gardens for our garden and home, Al's garden and home forecast, we should expect to see those temperatures hug almost 80°. All part of this ridge of high pressure that's on the move, tracking its way off to the west, is going to allow for our jet stream to become a little bit more linear. That's going to allow for that slow cooling trend until Monday, a bit of a shock to the system. Our next low and trough helping to not only drop our temperatures almost 10° below what is normal, so we go from well above average to below average, but also bring the chance of rain back to our area. You can see it all spelled out here over the next week or so. Memorial Day Monday, the unofficial start to summer, feeling a lot more like early spring, but no need to fear warmer, drier skies return next week as we are enjoying that sunshine, a bit of the marine layer for much of the day tomorrow along the coast as those high thin clouds march their way back overhead, working our way into Saturday, Sunday just about the same as we stay dry tonight, falling to 54°.

[00:02:56]Kiddos, tomorrow heading off to the bus stop, it's going to be a mild start to the day, 55 and then 80° by the evening as afternoon highs return to the low 80s, 60s for the coastline, and our Memorial Day weekend ahead, expecting that cool down by Monday with our 7-day forecast showing the ups and the downs that comes with the month of May. Again, nearly 80° for the next 3 days, so a very picture-perfect weekend ahead. That rain doesn't return until Monday afternoon and evening. So, not a wash out by any stretch.
