Amateur radio communication involves setting up directional antennas like the Moxon antenna at appropriate heights (around 6 meters in this case) and adjusting their orientation to optimize signal reception and transmission. The quality of radio contacts depends on factors including antenna height, direction, power output (70W in this setup), and propagation conditions which can vary significantly based on weather, altitude, and geographic location. Operators use standardized communication protocols including call signs, signal reports (S-units), and proper etiquette to establish successful contacts across distances.

Testing Radio Gear Re-Installed In My JAGAdded:
Bonjour. Hello. Welcome to another video, Max Mountain World. And yes, the kit is back in the Jag. So, test run again. I heard a bit of prop when I was on my way down here. So, you never know, might get some decent contacts. And I've seen a few friends that are on Facebook and I put a little thing up there as well. So, here we go. It's a beautiful day here today. Currently at 800 m altitude at the side of the lake here.
The water is creeping up, but I've managed to get far enough away for it not to be a problem if the water level does come up. The lake is filling up for summer. So, uh yeah, quick uh view check. Few folk down here doing the I think they're going to be doing the old uh surfing thing. There's not very much wind today, but I was speaking to this chap and he reckons that the forecast says it might get a bit windy later on, which is good for them, not so great for me. So, uh, yeah, all sorts. He's just fishing just now with his dog. So, I've got the Moxon antenna set up and, uh, very, very little wind. It's very stable. I haven't got it up at it full height of one section less. Couple of technical reasons, but it should still work fine at that. It's at about uh six mters over the ground. Five and a half or so, six, five, whatever over the car.
It'll work fine. And I've checked the tuning. It's perfect. So, got the usual stuff up to protect against the sun, the parasol, and I've got the screen blanked off as well. Looks like all the toys are coming out today. Still to get a contact, but there is stuff there. Just got to swing the antenna in the appropriate direction for some of it.
Thank you. Calling you calling 31 equal mic.
>> Who is calling? Who is calling? 26 Victor 73. Listening.
>> Yeah. 26 Lima Victor 73. Do you want to go 550? 550. Yeah.
>> Roger 6 LV 73 lifting by.
>> Yeah, roger there. 26 Lima Victor 73.
You got 14 delta delta 0007. My name is Max Mike alpha x-ray. I'm portable southeast France in the mountains of the Alps. Roger one of me. Good to have you. 7 delta delta 7 Victor 73. You're five and seven. Roger.
>> Yeah, roger. Okay. Well, got you a bit of five and five. 5 56 57. Conditions not very stable as yet. Uh what's the operator name now? The name here is Rob Romeo Oscar, the city from the southwest coast on a Sigma Venom and a 3000 radio.
>> Yeah, sorry that was very very rapid and I was adjusting my antenna. Could you repeat?
>> Yeah. Could you repeat that? I didn't I didn't catch that. I'm I've got antenna swinging around and everything.
>> Plymouth United Kingdom. The equipment is a Sigma Venom and a 3000 radio. Have a good friend.
>> Yeah, Roger. What's the name again, please?
>> It's Rob, my friend. Roger Rob. Romeo Oscar Bravo. Repeat. Romeo Oscar Bravo.
Roger.
>> Yeah, Roger. Okay, I've got that there, Rob. Sorry about that, but I'm right.
And I'm um static mobile here as well.
And uh yeah, just uh antennas. I'm also recording from my YouTube channel, so uh kind of active. I need six pairs of hands there, Roger.
>> Yeah, Roger, you're bouncing up to eight and nine. You're bouncing up to eight and nine. So, propagation is there, but that is a little bit sporadic there, my friend. But you're doing a fantastic job from the portal, Roger.
>> Yeah, Roger. When you see the southwest, whereabouts, are you >> Did you see Dors? You again there for a minute. Come on back. Try again. Try again, friend. 773.
>> Yeah. Roger. Okay, Rob. Yeah, I was just asking uh what's your city there? You said southwest. Whereabouts are you?
>> Okay, the city is Plymouth on the southwest coast down in Deon. Roger.
>> Yeah, roger. Okay, my location here is near the city of Gap as in golf alpha papa. Golf alpha papa. I'm located in the mountains of the Alps about halfway between the city of Gap and the Italian frontier. I have your five and five.
Your last over. Roger.
>> Roger. Roger. Well, I enjoy your holiday. If you're there on holiday, you have yourself a good one. And take care on those roads. Crazy weather over here.
We've got wet weather most of the time over here at the moment. Roger.
>> Yeah, Roger. Well, I'm not on holiday. I live here. I've been living here for 18 years. Roger.
>> Roger. But the accent isn't French. So, where's the original accent from? It sounds a little bit Scottish.
>> Yeah, Roger, you've nailed it in one there. Originally from Edinburgh, the capital city. Roger.
>> H. Well, we can take the Scotsman out of the city, but we can't take the city out of the Scotsman. Roger.
>> Exactly. You've absolutely nailed that one. Okay, there Rob, I'm going to cut loose just now. Uh, and I'm recording for my YouTube channel. I don't know if you're aware of my channel. My channel is Max Mountain World. Max Mountain World on YouTube. Roger.
>> Okay, Max, you have a fantastic time and we'll be listening for you again. take care of that portable DX shows DX what I mean.
>> Yeah, roger. Okay, Mercy per the contact and Mercy Pay Par fron. Okay, thanks for trying to speak French there. I do speak both. So, uh, nice one there, Rob. Catch you again sometime. I'll pass it back to you for a quick final. 26 Lima Victor 734 Delta Delta00007 Portable. Cheers and beers and have a great day. Andy Messi for the contact.
>> Nice little contact there into Plymouth in England. But the wind's getting up a bit now. It's not quite as calm as it used to be.
And these guys and girls, where is she? There taking advantage of it. So it becomes good for them and a bit worrisome for me. The moxen's not really flying around too much. But few white tops starting on the top there.
So yeah, I need to be careful. See if the wind's going to come up any further.
>> No, that last one was a he. That's a she.
Wow.
Nice.
Watching the weather, watching the wind.
As I say, these guys when I first came here were telling me, "Yeah, the wind's going to get up." And it is. I don't know if it's going to get any stronger.
It's not causing a problem as yet, but uh just the one contact so far. The propagation a bit dodgy. So, uh I'll see if I can catch anything else on the tail out of this video, but we'll see. This is as much, if you've watched the last couple of videos I've done on this, it's as much uh an experiment. I've put the stuff all back into the the Jaguar because the Jaguar is now back on the road obviously. Uh, and uh, I've kind of refined things, got it a bit nicer, easier to use and stuff, but it's working. So, that's the main thing. The experiments work well. Propagation.
Yeah, mother nature's not been that great today, but we'll see how it goes from there. Okay. Thanks very much for watching.
I am 14 delta delta 07. I'm hearing 29 whiskey tango 2000. Did I get that right?
>> Yeah. Roger. Roger. Yeah, you got it right there. 29 Washington, Texas 200.
And uh the operator name here would be Nick, November, Italy, Charlie Kilowatt.
Nick is the name. Roger.
>> Yeah, roger there, Nick. I've got you about an S1 S2, but your audio is bringing it through. Lovely. I am operator here is Max like Mike Alpha X-ray like Mad Max the movie. I'm southeast France in the in the mountains of the Alps. Roger.
>> Roger Max.
We have worked before, but it's been a while ago. Hope you're keeping well there, Max. And good to catch up with you again. Uh, band conditions are not just great at the moment there, Max.
You're 5152 5152 with Queen Sugar Baker. QSL, Max.
>> Yeah, much the same this end there. But as I say, your audio is bringing it through lovely there, Nick. H, just remind me whereabouts are you? Yeah, we're about 10 miles west from Mullingar if you know Ireland. We're in the Midlands of Ireland. 10 miles west from Mulling County West made Max over.
>> Yeah, Roger. Yeah. Yeah, I know Ireland pretty well. I lived there for a number of years. So, uh, yeah, fine business there, Nick. About an S1, S2. And, uh, as I say, Radio Super 5 just blasting through on the audio there. Roger.
>> Roger. Yeah, likewise. Likewise there, Mike. I did want one or two stations a bit earlier on there from the 14 division, you know, one from 13 division and then uh the propagation, you know, it's still there one minute and gone the next. It just dropped out of me over.
>> Yeah, Roger. Well, frankly, I'm surprised surprised that's not happened to us. It's nice that we've managed to make this happen there, Nick. So, I don't know if it's going to last. As you say, it's not very stable at all. Roger.
>> Yeah. What was the call again there, Max? Over. Whoa. Is that you? You just blasted me.
>> I just switched over to another antenna over.
>> Goodness sakes. Did you go horizontal?
>> No, I went over to a homemade tournament quad and the other antenna is just a vertical homemade vertical 58. Only a few meters off the ground there. And just uh they've been tuning it up there today. Over.
>> Yeah. Well, you came up to a 567 there.
Very, very strong. Very, very strong.
And your audio is just blasting.
Absolutely fantastic there, Nick. Nice one, sir. Yeah, I'm uh running uh static mobile here. I've got Mox on antenna, homemade wire mox on antenna, running about 70 whisies from a Yu Fox Tango 891, Roger.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think I remember you run that setup before. And if I remember rightly, I think you had a two element quad there as well, Max. Over.
>> Yeah. No, it's a two element uh mox on a homemade wire mox on. Roger.
>> 556 now.
when I switched over to the tool quad this side, Max, but it's not really a fair comparison. The the homebrew quad is up at about 20 m and uh uh the homemade 58 that I'm just building and testing at the moment is only about 5 m off the ground or maybe a little bit less to the base of the antenna there.
Roger.
>> Yeah, Roger. Well, you'd want about 145 degrees for me. About 145. I'm not that far away from the northwest of Italy, the frontier with Italy there. Roger.
>> Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll be I usually be about 1:30 1:30 there for uh for France and that kind of covers it there. Yeah, that's why I'm beaming now. But uh yeah, not a bad day today. Rain showers from time to time. It's been cold here, Max. It's been cold all year, although it's supposed to warm up maybe later on today and maybe over the weekend. temperature really uh been struggling to get up above the mid teens, you know, 15 or 16 degrees over here. And I think it's been pretty much the same across most of Northern Europe over.
>> Yeah. Well, we've got a nice day here.
It was beautifully calm an hour ago when I set up, but a little bit of wind getting up from the west, but uh not causing any issues for me quite yet. But uh I'm sitting at the side of a lake down here. Uh when I say down here, I'm up at altitude. I'm at 800 m. It's about 2,600 ft and uh I've got the antenna pointing about 330 there directly towards you.
>> Yeah, just just give me the call again for the log max. Over >> QSK.
>> Yeah, QSK, standby, please. You're acknowledged. Uh yeah, the call here is 14 delta delta 07.
>> Oh yeah, 14 delta delta 007. No bother at all. Uh I think you have a couple of QSKs want to get in there and give you holler max. Look at I wish your 73s let you go there. Work a few more. And uh great to hear you in there, Max. It's been a while. Hopefully it won't be quite as long until next time round.
From the 29 Whiskey Tango 200 over.
>> Yeah, Roger, Nick. It has. I don't have the log with me, but I'm sure it has been a little bit a little while there.
Okay. Yeah, I'm going to bring in the other station that has to stand by there. And thanks very much for the contact. Always a pleasure there, Nick.
And hopefully we can catch you again sometime. Not in a long time. Uh not as long as it's been so far, I think.
Anyway. Okay. Uh 29 Whiskey Tango 200.
I'll clear with you after your final. 14 Delta Delta 07. Have a great day. Cheers and beers.
>> Max, great to hear you in there after such a long time. And yeah, hopefully it won't be quite as long till the next QSO. 14 Delta Delta 7 29 WT200. Clear.
Cheers, Max. Thank you.
>> Yeah, nice one. Okay. Uh the station that I asked to stand by there. Uh thanks for your patience. Come in now.
14 Delta Delta 007.
Okay. Mine. Very good afternoon. 73s. Uh the call this way is 26 Alpha Tango 561.
Operator name is Peter. Location will be the city of Plymouth on the southwest coast of England. My friend, your report? Very good. 59 59 is your report.
A little bit of QSB there, my friend.
But we copy you very well there, my friend. Roger.
>> Yeah. Well, you came in a five and nine there yourself there, Peter. Thanks very much. Operator, this side is Max Mike Alpha X-ray and I'm located Southeast France. I'm near the Italian frontier.
Roger.
>> Okay, there Max. Okay, I got the call 14 Delta Delta 07 or 077. I'm not quite sure. Uh you can correct me in a moment there, Max. But uh yeah, my pleasure. Propagation here.
You're the first uh contact for me today. Propagation's been very poor for the last few months, up and down conditions. And uh then you turn on the radio next day and there's absolutely zed.
But uh among the working equipment this side, a transceiver would be the Yau Fox Tango 710. The microphone is also Yau.
It's the M70 desk mic. We're using only a vertical vertical 58wave serial Venom antenna. And the power from the radio uh at the moment 100 W at the moment.
They're max here overcast cloudy just a slight dampness in the air. I think the temperature around about 15 16Β° outside.
But uh I believe the forecast coming up for the weekend is very warm and stable conditions there. Max my phone. Roger.
>> Yeah, Roger. Okay. Thanks for the info there, Peter. I'm static mobile here.
I'm running the Fox Tango 891 by Yau standard microphone about 70 whisies. My antenna is two element homemade wire moxon antenna there. Roger.
>> Roger. Maxwell business from the mobile station there. Max in southeast France.
So, uh, are you on the holiday or or do you live in 14 Division Max, Roger?
>> Yeah, Roger. Well, I live here. I've been here for about 18 years now. And, uh, yeah, I do run a YouTube channel.
I'm recording just now as well. Uh, my YouTube channel is Max Mountain World.
Max Mountain World, the name of the YouTube channel. And, uh, that video will be up later on this evening. Yeah, I'm a resident here uh, for 18 years now.
Roger. Roger. Well, you must be enjoying the sunshine in that region, that's for sure. Better than the British weather.
And I detect a Scottish accent. Am I correct, Matt?
>> Yeah, Roger. Originally from Edinburgh.
And uh yeah, it's a beautiful day here today at about 17Β° just now. Uh quite calm. A little bit of wind getting up, but nothing too serious to threaten what I'm doing here with a big antenna 6 m above the car. But uh yeah, it's working well. It's working very well. My location, I'm near the city of Gap, as in Gulf, Alpha Papa, and I'm about halfway between the city of Gap and the Italian frontier. I'm in the mountains of the Alps and my current location, I'm 800 meters over sea level at the side of a lake. I'm about 2,600 ft ASL. Roger.
Now, Max, well, a beautiful location by the sound of it there. Yeah, fine business there, Max. Okay, Max, please confirm your call. 14 delta delta, I think 077. I'm not quite sure, but I I will log you in on the 11dx.net cluster. So, therefore, if you use this app or program, you can uh receive my QSL eqsl with my my picture, my photo there, Max. Should be my pleasure there, M. Roger.
>> Yeah, Roger. I do use the clusters uh both of them, the both the main ones anyway, the 11DX and also the cluster NL, but uh not when I'm mobile. It's not so easy for me to do when I'm mobile.
I'm running cameras and all sorts of things here. But uh but yeah, that' be I don't do QSL these days, but uh if you want to send one, fine. But as I say, I normally don't do them these days. But uh Peter, fantastic catching you. Been an S9 all the way. Roger.
Okay then, Max, no problem. Yeah. Okay.
I I will log you in there and uh you can have a look later for uh my uh picture uh my photo QSL. Not important to me uh for returning, but uh I won't do it all the same there. Max, please just confirm your unit number there, Max. Roger.
>> Yeah, sorry, I forgot your previous request there. I'm 14 delta delta 0007 as in 14 delta 007. Roger.
>> Okay, James 0007. Okay then, Max. Okay, my good friend. Well, many thanks for acknowledge my um my QSK and of course many thanks for the nice QSO. Been a pleasure to to be able to work your station today. Hopefully uh we'll speak again in the near future. Maybe there are other stations waiting to make the contact with you, Max, because uh you're definitely strong. 59 all the way at the moment there. So, Max, all the golden numbers 7351, sir. Good luck with the radio and the DX on your side. And uh you take care, my good friend. 14 Delta Delta 07 from 26 Alpha Tango 561. Peter, many thanks very much. You take care, my friend. Roger.
>> Okay, there Peter. Well, thanks for the shoutin and thanks for your patience at the beginning there while I finish the previous QSO. Nice one, Nurser.
Hopefully, we'll catch you up again sometime. As I say, I am recording.
You'll be on my YouTube channel, Max Mountain World this evening. Later on this evening. Okay, 73s 51s. All the best from the southeast of France. 26 Alpha Tango 561 14 Delta Delta 0007.
Cheers and beers. Have a great day.
>> Yeah. Cheers and beers, folks. Take care. Bye-bye for now.
>> Bye-bye.
Wind's getting up a wee bit. This bad boy is swinging around a bit.
Let me zoom out a bit. Yeah. So, uh just uh going to put it all away, but I've got plenty stuff to watch. What here?
Watch here. As I say, conditions getting better for all of these guys. Hello.
And uh yeah, it's h getting worse for me. Although it's not too much of a threat as yet, but here with the mountains, the weather can change in seconds. So, I don't want to have a crash with the antenna. Okay, that's it for today. Uh prop seems to be building up again. I can always use the old faithful uh twooot fire stick uh for anything else here. Just beside the water here always works well. Okay, there's one that's shifting fast.
As I say, definitely getting better for these guys.
I'm down southeast France. I was just listening to you guys. Thought I'd give you a quick hello.
>> Well, you're tracking down southwest night kingdom down in Devon. Talking Deon. Uh you got camp this way through a little bit there. And Carl, he's a little bit further on in a place of darkness.
>> Yeah, Roger. Okay. Uh I've got you a 59 plus plus.
And yeah, I'm static mobile here in the Alps, uh southeast France. What have you guys got call signs I can nip in for the log?
>> Uh do you guys uh run call signs there that I can have for my log?
>> I don't mate personally. Um yeah, I'm just the muffin that's been on here since a child. But yeah, everybody knows me as Kev.
>> Yeah, that's not a problem. Thanks there Kev. No problem. Operator this side. I'm Max Mike Alpha X-ray like Mad Max the movie and uh as I say I'm located in the mountains of the Alps in southeast France just running static mobile um and yeah I heard you there. I was just having a scan around and thought I'd just do a quick hello. Roger.
>> Uh you're on today and radio for no problem. Absolutely.
>> Like you're sitting next to me. Yeah, no problem. Okay guys, I'll leave you aside. I don't know. Kev, is Carl, are you able to get me as well?
>> Oh, yeah. You're banging across here, mate. No problem. Yeah, you're midnight plus radio 5. Yeah. Super signal.
>> Yeah. Okay. Well, I'm only running 70 W.
Nothing too spectacular. Running a Yu radio and uh a Moxon homemade wire Moxon antenna that I'm pointing directly at you there, Roger.
>> All right. Yeah. Yeah. Now you're cracking through. Well, well, I'm only running a a little uh 203. Uh, I suppose it's giving out about sort of 80 uh watts. Uh, you know, I'm on a uh a DX5000, the KO DX5000.
>> Yeah. Roger. Well, that's working well.
Working well. The Yui radio here is the 891 standard microphone and about 70 whisies as I said there. So, uh, yeah, my altitude here at 800 m about 2,600 ft above sea level there. Roger.
Oh, you got a perfect spot for getting out anyway.
>> Yeah, it works for me anyway. Okay, guys, I'll leave you to it. Thank you very much for taking my call there on the side and uh we'll catch you again sometime hopefully. I am if you are interested. I'm 14 delta delta 0074 delta 007 and uh I'm just near the Italian frontier in the mountains of the Alps. Okay, cheers and beers. Leave it back with you Kev. Have a great day you guys. Bye.
They usually talk about here. Yeah. Yeah. He was coming through really well. It was a fancy thing, wasn't he? Yeah. Up in the mountains.
>> Yeah. Well, that's uh sort of the end, is it?
>> Yeah, I think that's what he was saying there. But um yeah, that's good considering it right down low.
>> I've got a clear view that way. It's not so bad.
>> Yeah, I guess. Yeah, I guess you are really.
Yeah, you know, if uh yeah, anybody coming from the other way are my bollocks. But yeah, coming from uh into Europe, right? cuz I often flick around and I hear him in Belgium and France.
