Clemson names new university president

[00:00:00]Clemson University announced new leadership this morning. The 16th president of that university, Lauren Miller standing by live very near campus and Lauren, you say he'll be there for about 5 years.

[00:00:13]Yep, Kevin Guskiewicz will take over as the university's next president. It was decided or really approved this morning by the Board of Trustees with a 5-year contract.

[00:00:23]It was a big morning for the Tigers.

[00:00:25]Officially welcome president-elect Kevin Guskiewicz to Clemson University and to the Clemson family. For the 16th time in 136 years and only the second time in the past 27 years, Clemson University's Board of Trustees selected the next president. All in favor say I. I. I. Any opposed? The motion carries.

The contract for newly approved university president Kevin Guskiewicz was for about $1.2 million plus other performance incentives. James Clements, the previous president, retired from the position at the end of 2025. Since then, Provost Bob Jones has been leading the school as the interim president and Jones was set to retire at the end of 2025 but agreed to serve as interim president until someone new was approved. So, a little bit about Guskiewicz, he's been the president of Michigan State University since March 2024 and prior to his time at Michigan State, Guskiewicz served as chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With both significant challenges and extraordinary opportunities, uh, together our community has been focusing on rebuilding trust, strengthening transparency, and reaffirming the university's commitment to students, faculty, and the people of Michigan. And during that time, we achieved the most successful years of philanthropic giving in, uh, the university's history and, uh, we will do that at Clemson. During Wednesday's meeting, he explained how deeply honored he was to accept this role and how he will execute it moving forward. I believe that the role of a university president is to support, empower, and elevate the people who and the mission of the institution.
