The Anishinabek Police Service has launched a public awareness campaign about coercive control, a manipulation strategy used by abusers to dominate, isolate, and control partners through tactics like monitoring location, cutting off family connections, and dictating finances. The campaign was prompted by a significant increase in strangulation calls, which carry a very high risk of serious bodily harm or loss of life. The campaign includes updated resources on the APS webpage to help individuals recognize warning signs of this dangerous behavior.

Good morning northeastern OntarioAdded:
Good morning Northeastern Ontario. I'm Amanda Hicks. The Anishinabek Police Service has launched a new public awareness campaign. The initiative focuses on coercive control, a strategy used by abusers to dominate, isolate, and manipulate their partners. Police say warning signs include an abuser monitoring a partner's location, cutting them off from family, or dictating finances. APS says the campaign was prompted by a concern over recent calls involving life-threatening assaults.
Really significant concerns that was identified to all the officers and community members was an increase in strangulation uh calls where there was a form of and what we know from history is that when there is strangulation, there's a very high risk. It increases the risk of loss of life.
Uh and serious bodily harm. So, that's concerning.
The APS webpage on domestic violence has been updated with new tools to help individuals recognize the warning signs.
