Ephesus was one of the most significant ancient cities in the Mediterranean, housing 250,000 people 2,000 years ago and featuring one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—the Temple of Artemis, which was four times larger than the Parthenon and burned down on the same night Alexander the Great was born. The city also contained the third-largest library in the Roman Empire, which still stands today, and is believed to be where the Virgin Mary spent her final years. Today, Ephesus remains the best-preserved ancient city in the Mediterranean region.
