A Lyft driver in Florida attempted to scam a customer by submitting an AI-generated image of a messy car interior to justify a $75 damage fee, but the fraud was detected when the customer noticed a Gemini watermark in the corner of the photo, demonstrating that AI-generated images often contain subtle artifacts that can reveal their artificial origin.

Lyft Driver Fakes Damage with AI + Utah's Tiny TownsAjouté :
Hey, hey, hey.
Heat. Heat. N.
Hey, hey, hey.
KSL Bright Sides with Ethan Miller.
>> Do they not have enough of us recorded already? They could just do this in AI >> and Alex Cury.
>> We're not even real. This entire show is just a hologram.
>> This is KSL Bright Side, the afterparty.
But it's before >> with Ethan and Alex on KSL News Radio.
>> Millard. I got Alex Giri here. I had my microphone on.
>> No, you got it.
>> Do you need to have yours on?
>> No, you're good.
>> All right. Welcome back everybody.
Thanks so much for joining us today.
Among the things we're going to talk about today, I want to share with you a story of a man and his daughter.
>> Oh, is there any more important relationship in this world? Uh, I certainly don't think so. But >> then a man and his daughter, is that what you said?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
>> It's just a way to introduce the story.
>> So, check this out. Uh, this dude named Bert Gore in Florida of Florida, uh, said his teenage daughter and a friend took a lift home from the beach last Saturday. He paid for it with his lift app, right? And then a little while later, he was alerted that he had been charged a $75 damage fee. Uh, and the driver said that these girls in the back of the car made a giant mess and so he's charging a $75 fee. And the guy the first the first thing he thought was these this girl's grounded.
>> Yeah, that's what Yeah, that's what he actually said. He was like, "Ah, these girls are in huge trouble." And by the way, uh, a spilled mocha frappa cappuccino in the back of a seat with a couple of teenage girls who ignore it.
>> You know, you could It's not that hard.
It's not necessarily that hard to uh to imagine, right?
>> For me, it's not the 75 bucks. It's that my daughter would think it was okay to trash a car and then leave.
>> Mhm.
>> That's the problem. Uh because I have 75 bucks if I need to. I could get to 75 bucks. I could sell some stocks, >> right, >> and uh you know, raise $75. I could probably do it.
>> Yeah. No, >> I could take a loan out against my 401k.
>> You you take a penalty, but uh there you go. Uh anyway, so he says, "All right."
So he starts going through the process.
He starts communicating with customer service and he said, "Well, show me proof. Show me what this mess is." And they send him a photo and we have this photo. Do we have this photo? Uh >> give me just Well, let me see if this will work. It's I'm having this photo.
>> Give We had to reset our system. So that's fine. We'll get it. I want you to imagine if you will in your mind's eye cuz it looked like to me the back seat was it looked like a >> It looked like a melted milkshake.
>> It looked like a melted milkshake. Yes.
But like dumped over dumped over like a third of like a you know a seat which by the way pulled. It's pulled >> right. It looks basically looks like my car does sometimes after like a long drive you know with the kids.
>> And so he looks at that he says, "Oh my gosh." But then his daughter who his daughter is of course incensed.
>> Oh yeah.
>> And she's looking at that. She's saying, "We did not do that." And then she noticed a little star in the corner, a little star watermark in the lower right hand corner.
>> And then they realized that this image had been generated by AI that this man had taken a photo of his back seat and then asked AI to show it messy with stuff spilled on it and left in it. And then he submitted that and said, "Here's proof. I give me 75 bucks."
>> Right. And and then Lyft gets told that, "Hey, man, this is uh Lyft gets told, hey, this is a fake image. Look at the Gemini thing in the in the background."
I congratulate Lyft because they actually >> they saw that and they knew immediately.
>> They're like, "Yep, yep. It got it got busted."
>> They said, "Okay, you're off the hook.
No problem." And and uh I I would assume that this driver no longer drives for Lift. Now, I didn't see that. I didn't see anywhere where Lyft said that they'd fired that driver. And I can't I can't imagine that they would feel comfortable with a driver like this continuing to drive in that platform and represent that company. I mean, obviously, he can't drive for Lift anymore.
>> Here's the thing. This this girl like could have been in not just huge trouble. I mean, 75 bucks. This is Here's the other thing, though. I wonder if they went back and they could probably There you go. There's the picture of it. First of all, it looks it looks exactly like it you think it would if there was a Rockus uh McDonald's party in the back.
>> Yeah.
>> You know what I mean? And so for me, I would have seen that and gone, Yeah.
same same reaction the dad the dad would. I wouldn't put it past my kids to make a mess. I would I don't I don't know. It's This is a really really bad situation for this family to get put in. And I'm glad Lift saw the saw what happened. I bet this isn't the first I bet this wasn't this guy's first attempt. You know what I mean? I bet if they went back Yeah. I bet if they went back >> This is not a first go for him. The thing about the Gemini image was you could see the watermark down there in the bottom.
>> Yeah.
>> I think he just it because it's that grayish white. If it was still black in that area of the car, like if the car was a dark car instead of a lighter car, >> right, >> he would have been you that Gemini thing would have been seen I think a lot easier. I just think he didn't see it.
He's also just a massive idiot. So, if you're going to scam people, be smarter about it. I mean, that's that's a big that's a big take away.
>> So, Gemini is the that's the one that Facebook uses, right?
>> Uh, is it Google >> or is it Google?
>> Yeah, Google's Google's the Gemini.
Grock is uh >> I don't know that I would have noticed that >> star.
>> No, that's what I'm saying. And on that white background, it would be tough to track.
>> Even if even if I saw the star, I don't know if it would have registered for me.
>> Right.
>> That's all I'm saying.
>> Uh I don't know. I would have looked at it and gone, "What is this? Why does this guy have like a what is this a trademarked image? So I don't I I couldn't tell you before today. When I saw the when I was told, "Oh yeah, it's a watermark for Gemini." I went, "Oh yeah, that looks like the Gemini logo, I guess." But if somebody asked me to draw the Gemini logo last night, I would have gone, I don't know what that is.
>> Put up that photo again. Put up that photo again.
>> Let's have a uh let's have a look at this at this. By the way, you don't waste fries like that. You can't.
>> Ethan, in your condition, you can't.
>> You can't waste those fries. Not in my condition. Well, and fries are number one for my kids.
>> Oh.
>> So, I would be suspicious of that. If the lift driver said they left fries all over, I would say my kids left fries behind cuz that does not sound >> like them. Uh but this is a very con convincing image. If he had not left >> if he had not left that watermark, I don't think this man would have had any defense.
>> He would have he would have said nothing. That's why here's the thing is I took I had a big accident last year.
uh where I was rearended and it totaled my car and it was significant speed. It was on the freeway. I was stopped and this guy didn't even have the chance to stop. I think it was like 60 mi. So, my car gets totaled. I'm not hurt at all, which is great.
>> But the amount of pictures and video that I had to take for this guy, this guy's insurance company's like, "Hey, here's the portal for you to be able to log in and put all your pictures." Yeah.
And I was just I'm I'm sending them going, man, I hope that they can I don't know if this sees if they can see the damage as well as it. I hope somebody actually comes out. Now, of course, a claims person ended up coming out and having to look at the car anyway, and they totaled it. But I remember thinking to myself, does this picture depict any is it is it uh am I is this doing a good enough job of showing it? And then I actually did think to myself when I saw this, I go, I could see people doing this with all of the claims. You know what I mean? The scratch on that bumper could be a little bit bigger. The dent right over here could be a big a bit bigger. And in an age where they're not actually going and sending people out necessarily all the time. They're just kind of going boom here's your money and send it to a shop. And if the thing is the shop see it and they're getting paid by the insurance company and then they're going to go nah. That's why this is he can't go with a giant dent and they go look what they they broke my window. They can't he can't do that because they'll be like all right well did you fix the window?
Like show me the show me the thing you know and that didn't happen. It was a lowlevel hey and I already cleaned it up. You know what I like, "Oh, I already got it detailed and here's $75." He was probably digging people every I bet he was doing it all the time and I bet he did it with his with his teenage >> customers quite often.
>> Well, and you know who who else he could get away with it uh with would be people who are very drunk.
>> Oh. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> You know.
>> Yeah. Remember when I did the experiment of uh driving Uber for like a few weeks?
>> Drunk.
>> No, I drove drunks around though. Do you remember this whole thing?
>> No.
>> Oh, dude. It was when we were like uh remember I was doing >> I don't think we were on the air for this.
>> Yeah, we were. Yeah, we were. I was I I was driving Uber for like three weeks >> and it was that and substitute teaching.
This is me adding uh to >> I remember substitute teaching.
>> I did them both like at the same time and I would and I would just every so often if I had you know a couple of hours I would do it because we work here close to the airport. I would do the airport run and there were times where people made messes massive messes.
>> Did you have people throw up in your car? No, but I would I was like, "If you're going to throw up, like this is not going to be good." And people would leave messes, but I I'll tell you what I did was I would just give them terrible reviews. Now, messes is in like if they spilled I didn't You don't get in the car, I'd be like, "You can't get in the car with that drink. You're not getting in." Like that's it.
>> You would say that?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Because most of the time, and a lot of times they try to sneak in like an open container or something, I could smell it. I'd be like, "No, no, no. I'm in trouble if you do that."
>> Yeah.
>> Get out.
>> And uh Yeah.
But people trying to carve out People try to carve out money in that situation is just kind of weird.
>> I've kind of wondered I I think I'd enjoy driving for Uber. I think I'd enjoy that.
>> Uh I don't think you would.
>> I I only did it for like two weeks because I was like this is this is uh And by the way, it made me feel for the Uber drivers, too, because I was like, "These guys aren't getting paid enough, man, to to deal with all this garbage."
>> I have poor literal garbage.
>> I have poor eyesight.
>> But I do want to say one thing. I think I'm out of focus on the thing.
>> Oh, >> sorry. We had bigger problems. I'll get it focused.
>> Look at him. Look at him.
>> I'm trying.
>> You're fine, dude. It's soft focus. It's what Barbara Walters did.
>> It's technical and we should fix.
>> It's soft focus so that we could, you know, take some of the uh take some of the edges off of those some of those details, dude.
>> I want I want to smooth out my liver spots and >> liver things. One of our engineers came in and said, "You should probably get something on the top of that head, man."
>> Talking about talking about like makeup.
Now, he's follicularly challenged like I am. Very similar. He said that to you.
>> Yeah. Yeah. He's like, "Oh, maybe maybe take some of the shine off of that."
>> Which when I did a bunch of TV in the morning, when I used to have to do the morning the night sports, remember that?
>> Yeah.
>> I definitely had makeup that I had to hit the old forehead with for uh to take some of that shine off. I've got something for you here, Ethan. I think this is a fun uh I've got something fun for you.
>> Okay, let's hear it.
>> Now, we asked people in the chat uh and we're going to keep doing this. This is going to be an all day deal. We're doing the Tiny Towns right here, right? Can I tiny towns? I want to do it because I'm not keeping you on track.
>> No, no, I I wanted to I wanted to make sure that I wasn't doing it earlier than I wanted to because I think it'd be fun to do. So, and we asked via the text or via the chat here, hey, what are the smallest towns? Like the smallest ones or cool ones or whatever you might because, you know, this is a weekend where people go out and travel. And you guys were talking about your snoody, oh, I have a camping ground I go to.
Caitlyn's like, I go camping, too. And then like they start talking about their little places they go and Ethan's like and if you know a tiny town, if you know a ghost town and you name it and then you're like, "Oh, you've never heard of it." It's the new thing that you people >> do. All right. You like campers who are like, "Oh, that's on the way through Highway 20." And you're like, "Get out of here."
>> So, it's a way for them to kind of flex their I'm I'm uh >> I'm well traveled and I'm I'm an outdoorsy person. So, I've got for you, Ethan, a quiz, >> okay?
>> Of real and fake places in Utah.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. And you have to you have to tell me if it's a real place or if it's a fake place. All right. These are these are indeed either real or fake.
>> Okay.
>> Let's go with Woodruff, Utah.
>> Woodruff, Utah, Utah. Oh, see this is tricky. I know what you've done here.
Gave me an old school Utah name.
>> Woodruff, Utah.
>> But old school old school Utah names is what we do, though. By the way, >> I think Woodruff is a town or a place somewhere in Utah. I think it is.
It is. It's in Rich County. There you go. Yeah. Yeah. It's in Rich County.
I've never been and it looks like it's pretty small town, but again, uh Woodruff Town. You want me to give you a description here of what it says? Uh oh, it it just says that this is a it's it's a town >> first settled in 1872.
>> Okay.
>> Uh in honor of >> the wood.
>> No, Woodruff. In honor of >> Oh, Wilford Woodruff.
>> No, Craig Woodruff.
>> Yeah, it was Wilford Woodruff. Uh, Craig Jeff Woodruff. Uh, okay. I've got another one for you, Ethan. So, that was a Was that That That was a real one.
Yes. Okay.
>> Okay.
>> I'm I've got I've got the lists in front of me here. Uh, >> prickly pear. Prickly pair.
>> Prickly pair, Utah.
>> Well, prickly pair and and it and it's these these aren't necessarily cities.
>> No, no, no.
>> They could be places. Yeah. Yeah.
>> I'm going to say no. Prickly pair is not a is not a real place. Who Who on earth would name a place name after Prickly Pear?
>> Somebody in Utah because it is a real place. It is. Where is it?
>> It's like between Vernal and Gosh, >> it's over in like Duchane County and it's like the big city is probably Vernal. You know what I mean?
>> Mark says Mark says you drive through Woodruff on your way to Bear Lake.
>> There you go. All right.
>> So, that's cool. Also, Mark pointed out that uh appearing in soft focus is a new GLP GP1 side effect. He actually saw himself blurry. That was one of that's one of the personalities.
>> Does it look better to you now?
>> It looks great. Okay. Moonshine Rapids.
>> Moonshine Rapids.
>> No, that's too good. It's too good of a name. It is not. It's too >> It is not a real place.
>> It is a real place, but it's in West Virginia.
>> Oh, matches cheating. No, it's not cheating. I'm giving you real and fake places.
>> So, this is not just in Utah.
>> No, no, no, no, no. I'm saying you're right. It's not a real place. Oh, >> in Utah.
>> It's a real place, but it's in West Virginia. So, you're right. These are just Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear on it.
>> Okay, so I got that one right.
>> You got it right.
>> Okay.
>> Uh, all red.
>> Still the king.
>> All red Utah. All red.
>> All Yeah. One word.
>> Oh, I want to say I want to say yes.
>> But I'm gonna say no. I don't think it's a place.
>> Pick place. I picked polygamous last name.
>> All red. Oh, good job.
>> Well, I mean it's a it's a it could be a more than just polygamous last name, but yeah. Uh Naples, Utah. Naples, Utah.
>> Naples. I think I think I've heard of that. Say that is a real place.
>> Okay. Naples, Utah. A real place.
>> Naples, Utah. I mean, you can get great Italian food there. Did I say I was the king?
>> You did. Uh, dinosaur.
Just dinosaur.
>> Oh, yeah. No, that is a place. It's a section of desert out in uh Utah.
>> Dinosaur is a real place.
>> Dinosaur. Not a real place in Utah. It is an actual city in Colorado. Right on the other side of where you would find all the dinosaurs there past getting out there. Highway 40. Okay.
>> Uh, Elk River.
>> Elk River.
Oh boy.
I feel like that's a Colorado place, too. Because sometimes Yeah. Elk River. No, that's a Utah place.
>> Fake place. It's actually in Montana.
>> Oh, dang.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh Andis, spelled with two N's.
>> And Utah. That's a real place. Utah is a real place.
>> Utah is a real place.
>> Yeah. Where is it? Do you know?
>> No idea. Um Oh, Brewin Point. This is a fun one. Breuin Point.
>> B R U I N.
>> Yeah. What? What did you What would be the alternate spelling?
>> B r e w i n apostrophe.
>> B r o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n bre.
>> No, I thought you were like brewing.
Like we're brewing.
>> No, apostrophe N. Yeah. Yeah.
>> And and apostrophe >> brewin.
>> We're brewing.
>> No, brewing like a bear. Bear brewing point.
>> Bruin point.
>> We never use brewin.
>> Uh I'm gonna say fake place.
>> Real place in Utah.
>> Oh, dang.
>> Yep. Shoot.
Uh Nelson wash.
>> Nelson wash.
>> It's a wa like a wash is like not even a >> It's a wash.
>> It sometimes has water in it. Sometimes it doesn't.
>> Right.
>> That's my definition of wash. I don't know what a scientist would say, but >> uh I'm going to say Nelson Wash is a real place.
>> Nelson Wash fake place.
>> Oh jeez.
>> Not a Utah local.
>> These are just becoming random. By the way, people are like at this point I thought I was getting tips on where to travel this weekend and now I don't know if I'm actually going anywhere. Uh Kluff Cliff >> Kluff Cliff >> Kluff Cliff.
>> I don't think you're clever enough.
>> I don't think you're clever enough for that. I'm going to say it's a real place.
>> Fake place.
>> Geez.
>> Yeah, I got you with that one. Because again, Kluff, very Utah name, right? But who would say Kluff Cliff, you weirdo?
You get Kluff Cliff. Uh let me see here.
Timber. Timber, Utah. Fake place.
>> Real place.
>> Boy, these are You know what? I found a groove here. Kaitlin, sometimes he finds my >> He He picks up on the lying.
>> He's a lister.
Now, at this point, I got him.
>> I don't know who this man is.
>> I freaking have him now. I have this guy. Uh that's it. Those are all the list of of real ones. So, if you've ever been out to some of these places or if you want to go some of these places, you can go check them out yourself. All right.
>> Well, we've got a couple of people that have texted in their own favorite small towns. We're talking about this because a lot of people for Memorial Day, they make their way into the small towns.
They go to see parents, grandparents, uh theo the old home town for wherever their family came from, >> homeless people that live out in Cliff.
>> And I've done that before. I did that several years ago. For us, for me, the nearest is Idaho Falls.
>> Yeah. And boy, you can get lost in some of those uh you can get lost in some of those Idaho towns, too, that are so tiny. These are just towns. These are these are places. These are locals, but Yeah.
>> So, if you've got small towns that you love to go to, uh here we have Helper and Eureka. That's Cheryl.
>> She says, "Hello, Helper and Eureka."
>> Those are >> I was Is that Well, I was going to say these are all areas down in that area.
Is this actually Cheryl?
>> Uh, I don't know.
>> Uh, this this is Cheryl Cole. I don't know if it's like that's a real person or if she's trying >> uh Ammon says Benson. Benson, Utah.
>> That also could be I could say that's a fake place, but I think it's a real one.
>> Uh, let's see. Hayawa is a ghost town.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of uh Marmalade District, Utah.
Appreciate Ben weighing in on that one.
It's a real place. Although it's not where you think it is.
>> It's the great thing about Marvel 8 is that it can be as big or as small as you want just depending on whether you're trying to sell a house or not.
>> Uh this one Ryan accuses me of just of uh he's on Google Maps around Vernal.
That's not true. I I there are some that are there, but I will tell you that Western Utah or West Utah like out I there's like places that just don't have any names out there. There's nothing out there. And so, >> and uh Patty Scott weighs in. Prickly pair point in Lake Powell is a terrible place to camp.
>> It sounds like >> first of all, but saying prickly pair point is sounds uh at Lake Powell.
Powell's prickly pair point.
>> Don't even I'm not even going there.
>> These are hard. Yeah, that's there's a lot of small towns but that are that are like actually not that small. There there's a ton because I was looking up tiny towns and it was like the tiny town of Moab and you're like, "All right, come on. These aren't good for the function that we have here." here. But there are places you drive by. These are places you'll drive by and it'll go, "By the way, no services. Don't don't try to stop here. Please don't stop here."
Yeah.
>> All of Cheryl's comments, uh, whoever this Cheryl is, if it's >> I don't think it's >> our coworker, but it's you can hit Lawrence, Cleveland, Clawson, >> all they're all in Emery County. They're all just You hit them at the same time.
They just are going through. These are actual tiny >> is Caitlyn is from a small town. Yeah.
>> Like that there's a very small radius.
>> Ryan says, "Yeah." Yeah. I wonder would all those people go to uh your high school?
>> Well, maybe. That's why I'm like, who is I'm just like questioning because I know all these people.
>> Did you know any Kohl's?
>> No.
>> Uh so you were in uh Price.
>> Yes, Price. And I uh would recommend Helper, not Price.
>> Okay.
>> There's not as much. I mean, there's stuff to do. Price.
>> That's bold for you to That's bold for you to not talk up your own place.
>> Helper has a Helper's going through a thing right now.
>> You can go to the Prehistoric Museum of >> They're going through a thing right now.
Let me ask you the question about Price cuz I like that whole area and I think Price has uh a couple really cool streets like with some old theaters and things like that. They're really neat.
>> Uh did you would you consider Price when you lived there >> to be a small town or a small city?
>> It was the city of the small town >> because it's like if you were in East Carbon or even in Emery, Walmart was in price.
>> Was in price. Yeah.
>> So it was the city.
>> It was the city of that area >> like out. Yeah. That's what I would say because then if more city you have to go up the canyon and then you're in >> Provo. Amber weighed in. So Ryan did mention Veo which you can't mention Veo because it would have been an easy one because Veo Pies obviously is what they're famous for. Veo Pies. Come on.
>> I've tried a couple of places to eat in Veo.
>> Yeah. It But Veies is like the classic, right? Isn't that what they say? You're going to be totally do this like that's what they say.
>> You know, I wasn't that impressed by it.
>> This is This is so Ethan Ray. I've had ve >> I didn't say anything.
>> No, no, it's fine.
>> I thought you were talking. I thought you were talking. I assumed you were going to big time everybody and be like that's not actually the best population.
>> No, but I do have something to share with off mic with you.
>> Silver Reef, that's a freaking cool name and I'm sad that it's a ghost town. We need to fire up. By the way, we were talking about the the cities up in up in Eden and everything or they're trying to rename that whole Ogden Valley city or whatever it is. Silver Reef, I don't care what that even means. It's really freaking cool.
>> Silver Reef is by St. George. It's right next to >> Yeah, it's a ghost town. Yeah. Yeah. You drive through it, I15 passes it. Uh, another silver place, Silver City, which is over past Eureka. Very, very cool place. There's a really neat little old cemetery over there.
>> All right.
>> Silver City.
>> Millard. We're going to move on to the next thing here. We went off on uh on all these small towns. I went down >> all these small town rabbit hole. By the way, uh, one of the small towns in Utah.
Rabbit hole.
>> No, it isn't.
>> No, it's not.
>> You guys thought about it, though.
>> Well, it's cuz at this point, how do I know?
>> I know. I know. There's some small places. Do we have the video of King Charles?
>> Oh boy.
>> I have a photo because our video setup isn't working, but I have a photo.
>> Uh, so this is the uh Charles, formerly known as Prince.
>> Uh, apparently uh got nailed by a seagull during his visit to Northern Ireland.
>> Well, that makes it sound like it dive bombed him. That makes it sound like he got the treatment there.
>> Well, he really kind of did get the treatment. That's a big big mark. And it's just right above his rear end on the back of his jacket.
>> Yeah, he got pooped on. Um, the king said, quote, "It's well it didn't land on my head."
>> Yeah.
>> It is well. It is well, King Charles.
>> Yeah. No, listen. You're going to make these public appearances, you're going to get pooped on in all senses. So, there's no there's no way you can avoid it at this point. And by the way, let me ask you this. Do they dry clean that or does it just get thrown away? Oneoff.
>> Well, he's a king. What I think happens is 50 different people take turns swabbing it with a Q-tip. No, but I'm saying is it reused again? He's all, do we still have poop jacket?
I kind of wanted to wear it today because this is kind of good weather for poop jacket, but dang, I don't want to.
>> And that's it would be that forever, by the way. And and and and I will say, speaking of that's a men's warehouse suit, right, that he's wearing.
>> Hey, I'll never tell.
>> And he'll never tell.
>> He's a he's at Mr. Mack. He goes, and I got the second one for a dollar.
>> But I'll never tell. Irene Martin who is a nor a resident of Northern Island and witnessed the incident and met the king shortly afterwards. She said quote being hit by a seagull. It's supposed to be good luck. We're so thrilled he came to Northern Ireland to see us and it's really nice to see him in Newcastle.
>> Sure.
>> Now, is there something >> that some residents of Northern Ireland might have quietly cheered?
>> Oh, for sure.
>> This doesn't matter where you It doesn't matter where you are. that that would have gotten cheers and everybody would have been really really excited.
>> There's a prickly history there in Northern Ireland, you know, between the British >> prickly pair >> and uh >> prickly pair Utah >> and the Irish. It's a it's a prickly pair situation, >> let's say. So anyway, good luck though to um King I still I still need to get used to calling him King Charles.
>> Yeah. Does um every like they still have I was such a huge uh Downtown Abbey guy.
You were too, right? Didn't we both watch a lot of Downtown Abby?
>> Love Down Abby. I like my dream is and I know that it's like you know but I just think about it I'm like he's got a he's got a butler he's got like a first footman he's got a vallet right >> you know what I loved about downtown Abby >> yeah what >> that it is a historical drama >> uh sedate >> calm >> uh very stylish >> not violent at all >> but they still found so many ways to kill people off >> Oh yeah >> on a regular basis and I thought that was phenomenal >> yeah and very creative ways too, like and and scandalous ways. But that's what makes these uh that's what make those old shows really really good.
>> It was great. It was great.
>> Miller, what else you got for me today?
>> Oh, what else what else do I have for you? Oh, well, hold on a second. Uh, so check this out. I was reading about this earlier today. So, apparently animals, including humans, behave differently when we are very, very hot. When it's very, very hot outside and we were very, very hot. We and all animals actually we change our behavior. Yeah. We actually become more stupid. Some creatures pick fights, others struggle to learn. I want to read you this uh story about um a southern pied babblers. This is something scientists observed in South Africa that these little medium-sized black and white birds on a regular nice beautiful day when they set the uh when they set the meal worms out for them at this aviary, they set them behind a piece of plastic and the birds go around the piece of plastic and eat the meal worms.
On very very hot days, you know what they do? They eat the plastic. These same birds, these same birds walk up to the plastic and try and peck through the plastic of the mealorms. It doesn't occur to them to do what they had done the week before, which is go around the plastic to get to the meal worms.
>> I think we're all a little bit dumber when it's super hot out for sure.
>> Do you think do you feel like you have seen this happen >> with animals? I do it myself. I if I get hot in this studio, I start getting mad.
So, and I start acting weird, you know.
>> Well, uh, >> are you saying that our behavior changes when it's super hot out?
>> In humans specifically, we face the following problems. Brain fog and fatigue. Heat stress forces the brain to divert resources, which slows reaction times, decreases concentration, and limits short-term memory, which is what was happening to those.
>> Well, it's all those are all GLP1 side effects, too, by the way, you just listed off.
>> We also have physical and physiological changes because to cool down, blood vessels widen to release heat, which lowers blood pressure and forces the heart to beat faster.
Uh, I just I'm telling you right now, for me, the heat makes me more mad than the cold does.
>> The heat makes me way more mad than the cold does. My kids are because I just get I stick to everything. You know what I mean? Like I'm just When you're hot and sweaty >> and here's the other part, too. When you're hot and sweaty and then like your kid comes up and like kind of nuzzles up and you're like, "Get out of here.
I love you, but get the heck out of here. I'm so freaking hot right now. Get out of It's not just you being a baby about not having air conditioning at one moment.
>> Yeah. Oh, for sure.
>> There's actually a scientific reason for this. Uncomfortable temperatures trigger the body's stress response and that leaves people feeling on edge and they are more prone to anger or to road rage.
>> Mark weighs in and this is a real one too. Heat equals stupidity explains a lot of behavior from Arizona and Florida both.
>> True.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Uh you it also leads to impulsive >> interesting >> impulsive decision making.
>> Oh yeah. Make terrible purchases when it's hot outside.
>> The the extreme heat can impair your judgment which leads to an increase in risk-taking behaviors and judgment errors.
>> Oh, >> this is in humans. So I told you about the birds who just, you know, >> try and tap through that classic the plastic because they're dummies. They don't know any better. But this affects humans too.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> And sometimes in big ways. I'm only bringing this up because although the the 10day forecast though has been changing a lot. Let me look at it now.
>> So this weekend is supposed to be phenomenal. It's like going to be 68 or something today, but then like Memorial Day weekend in Utah is going to be basically the most perfect weather you can imagine. And we've had the 95 to 100s almost before for as much of a drought as we've had. It's going to be a nice it's going to be a mild situation.
>> Oh, this has been the best spring ever.
>> I know. And I know started in December >> and I know that the governor's declared a state of emergency, but at 72 degrees and partly cloudy, what kind of emergency are we talking about here?
>> Uh, it's just a moisture situation, brother. You know, it's just moisture.
>> So, the high the high for this next 10 days is 86. That's according to my phone, >> which will be like by next week.
>> Uh, a little bit of rain next week. You know what's interesting?
>> We're reading off the forecast. We're like, "Hey, Caitlin, we can give you seven minutes on the forecast next week here."
Oh, >> I do. Here's the interesting thing is that we were supposed to get the 90s this weekend and next week.
>> Yeah. Didn't solidify.
>> No, no, didn't hold up. So, this long languid spring is going to keep on keeping on. And I love it, man. I just, you know, don't stop. It started in January. It's still going in May.
>> It should stay until July cuz I'm actually afraid though of what that means for the temperatures in July.
>> What do you think?
>> How hot is I don't know. I just it's going to be hot and I'm afraid >> like two two 300 degrees.
>> I don't do well any past 85 to be honest. If I if I see a nine we're not well 100 get me out.
>> Yeah. The road rage alone that's the only reason she's taking tracks now.
>> Well the good news is to make sure she stays away from because when it gets hot and then Caitlyn's driving the amount of birds getting flipped across I15 just goes right through the dang road.
>> Breaking traffic.
>> We start getting bad. We start getting really bad drive. That's interesting though. I would love to see the numbers when it goes from road rage incidents when it's just freaking hot out like your 100 degree days versus how much people are just pissed on the road be like why did you why did you cut that guy off cuz my freaking legs were sticking to the leather seat I was so pissed about it >> I can find out so hold on dear Google >> how are you I'm doing great >> if somebody has not done this study already >> my friend Alex and I were wondering are there more road rage incidents in high heat.
>> Talk to their AI friends. No, >> I know >> this is legit.
>> We have been we've been pioneering this for years because our Google searches were always inappropriately long.
>> Okay.
>> What they say?
>> Uh the National Institutes of Health report a 3.4% increase in fatal crashes >> in the United States on heatwave day heat wave days between May and September.
>> Okay.
>> So that is a consistent verifiable number. So yes.
>> But here's the other thing. And data is a data is a a mean beast, right? She's a She's a temperamental lady because the reality is is there's obviously a lot more a lot more people on the roads during the hot during the heat during those exact time frames you just mentioned.
>> Yeah, but but this is says during heat waves.
>> Heat waves. Heat waves. But during the most traveled times of the year though, too.
>> Well, yeah, that's true. But those are also the only times you >> I'm just poking holes. I'm just poking holes in your PhD thesis that you had that you're about to roll out. my PhD level Google search >> right in the in the thing that you wanted to you were going to hang your hat on in some mast's program on that stupid thesis and I already shot it down dude come on you can't just go you can't roll in with something like that the whole people the whole group of folks are going to are going to shoot that thing down >> oh for goodness sakes for goodness sakes all right finally do we have room for one more >> oh yeah yeah >> all right this is out of the we we poached this out of a St. George newspaper.
>> Oh my gosh, this is phenomenal, by the way.
>> But yeah, it is amazing. So, I I just want to read the headline to you. Date night is about to get glamorous >> as adult prom debuts in St. George. And I actually think this is a really cool idea. It's set for Friday, May 22nd from 8 to 11:00 p.m. uh at at Black Hill Event Venue, which I guess is a place in St. George. Uh they've got a formal night out for adults looking to dress up, dance, and reconnect. So they say the event organizer said >> it's an adult prom. Don't bury the freaking lead. It's adult prom.
>> I didn't bury the >> No, I know. But I'm just saying like everybody get that in your head.
>> I know people who definitely would love this. They would they'd rent them the limo.
>> Mhm.
>> You know what I mean? I'm trying to think of like the most late 90s prom kind of stuff that mid to late 90s stuff that I that I lived through. First of all, we were always having we always had to rent a dad gum tux. Were you renting tuxedos? Like to go to these Oh, yeah.
That was the thing. And now I appreciate that they don't do it. But I will say now we have way more dances than we need. As a guy who's had to pay for so many of these freaking dances because my kids not just going to his dances, he's going to other schools dances too. Now that's not enough. But I will say that I'm glad that they can just wear like uh slacks and a and just a random tie out of the closet instead of having a But I just I do I know some adults that would freaking love this stuff. I don't know how I feel about it right now. There is an open bar, right? Isn't that what they said? There's gonna be like a There's like a >> I think that's what I heard.
>> A cash bar.
>> I didn't know if it's open.
>> No, I don't know if it's open. No, I don't mean >> probably cash.
>> It probably can't be, but it's a it's this cash bar. And so that's the part where you >> a photographer, live DJ, and a cash bar.
That's according to camera with >> K. I want to see if uh I want to see, you know, who's probably working this?
Eric Cabera. He's probably the DJ at this thing.
>> According to the organizer, >> what's up adults? Trying to reconnect.
According to the organizer, many attendees are married couples who never attended prom together or miss the experience entirely. Others are parents looking for a rare night out. Quote, one couple said, "Our marriage depends on your events. Don't ever stop."
>> Oh, well, >> it's a it's a regular date night. I would I get that.
>> Getting dressed up and going out is nice.
>> The dress up is nice.
>> I think that's a really polite thing to say to an event organizer. That's really flattering. If those words came out of your mouth in a sincere way, then you have other work to do. Okay.
>> Besides going to this prom because if this is keeping your marriage together, at least there's something.
>> Yeah.
>> But obviously it's not going to hold it together forever.
>> I don't hate this. And you know what?
They could probably have they could probably have similar events up here in Northern Utah and have as much success.
>> Let me see how much people I bet there are people who weren't able to go that maybe there, you know, for whatever circumstance and then they go, "Hey, let's go. Let's fire this thing up."
>> Uh, I went to the ticket site. Hold on.
I'm But give me a second though. Did you say that you skipped all those dances or you just didn't like them?
>> To some. I just didn't really like it.
It just wasn't my vibe.
>> Okay. So, the adult premiere prom St. George.
>> Adult Adult Prom sounds a little scandalous, too.
>> Adult.
>> It's awkward. They could It's awkward.
Uh, the tickets range from $42.32 up to $176. What are they doing for that much?
>> I'm not sure.
>> Okay, now I have >> They got to pay for the photograph or the live.
But why is there that range? What do you get? What's this? Yeah. What's the premium package? Somebody somebody telling you that they love you at the end of the night. Like uh or some like >> optional photos maybe.
>> You know what? You pay extra and actually >> Okay, I got it. You pay extra. Your actual high school sweetheart shows up.
>> Okay.
>> Good or bad?
>> Has to meet your spouse. It has to meet your spouse.
>> Oh my god.
>> And then the rest of us are like this watching this whole thing go down.
Watching that whole thing. I'm just I the advice I give my kids by the way.
Like I just am such a huge believer in don't have a freaking boyfriend or girlfriend in high school. Will you guys get over >> I didn't have really That's why I didn't like dances cuz I just didn't care to do that. No.
>> And it made you feel like you were lesser cuz you didn't really have a date. That was obvious. I went with girls with my girlfriends a lot which was fine.
>> Yeah, that works out.
>> I just didn't really care.
>> The amount of money I want to apologize to Bruce and Leotaa. Just too much too much money you guys. I ap I am so sorry that you had to pay all that money. I will say that now the investment is being returned tenfold by me. I've had to start paying all these dad gum dances.
>> Well, you're the one I mean I don't want to keep bringing this up. You're the one that had seven kids.
>> That's true. No, I'm saying just for the just for the first one. He's the one who's going all the dances. He's the one who's been through the bulk of high school.
>> We can all do our best to show some empathy, >> but at some point we don't feel bad for you, >> you know.
>> Oh, no. Okay. Yeah. Don't judge. Just because I have a lot of kids again. All I'm doing is judging.
>> Well, you just did. But I'll >> stop crying about it.
>> You're one of seven, by the way.
>> I am one of seven. Yeah.
>> I love big families. I love big families.
>> Uh your youngest sibling, >> Mara. Yes.
>> Yeah.
>> So, >> good memory.
>> My thing is is like my kids tell there they were so mad when we were having our seventh kid.
>> And and they all looked at it like it's it's more money that I don't get. You're just going to spend money on this baby.
And I'm there's like >> I'm not gonna be able to go to prom.
>> I can't I can't go to Ma No more Mavic runs obviously because you guys me buy behind diapers again. And I was just thinking I'm always like yeah but now because you can't imagine your family without Mara, right? No, of course that's the way that's the way that it is. Same thing with our little Piper. So >> we you know so Mara and I we bookend our family. We are 14 years apart.
>> Yeah.
>> So my parents did seven and 14 years.
>> See uh I think Cooper's 15 years older.
No, no, he is. He's he's se No, it's the same exact thing. We have seven and the gap is 14 to the oldest.
>> And I'll tell you I'll tell you what's going to be interesting and you'll you'll know this because you've already seen this dynamic start to start to happen.
>> But when I look back and I realize how different our childhoods were.
>> Mar and I could not have grown up in different circumstances because I grew up in a house full of kids >> and she grew up in a house full of adults.
>> And I was I was the same thing. I was six of six and I was basically an only child at the end of high school. Yeah.
>> I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Like I had I had >> and your parents were typically earning more money than they ever had >> and they're way more relaxed about >> Oh my gosh.
>> Like they were gone more than I was.
They'd be like, "We're going to we're going to take the weekend and go across the Puget Town." And I'm like, "Oh, I'd love to go with you, but and they didn't want me to go with them. I didn't want to go with them either."
>> Yeah.
>> So that that was I I get it. The dynamic is is funny. And I'm already hearing my the older kids are already talking about like, "Oh, oh, you don't even remember the Salt Lake House." You see, and Mara, who grew up in in the Marmalade district, >> that's right.
>> That's what happened to her after was said and >> done. Formerly Marmalade to Jason. Uh, Miss J94 says, "I use Dear Google at Family Search and the missionaries think it's hilarious."
>> Dear Google, long time no search. Uh, wanted to catch you up on a few things that was going on.
>> That's right.
>> All right. Uh, Ethan, we got to take the long break here. Guess what we have? I I'm t we have to talk about the I I want Cam Elliott's story that they did on KSL. We have to talk about it during the regular show, right?
>> I have to We have to do it. It's amazing.
>> We're going downstairs where we'll be on KSL News Radio 116 2.7 FM 1168.
>> You can also, as always, stream this show where you're seeing it right now.
Also, where we are going to be downstairs.
>> That's right. We keep the live stream going. So, it pauses here and then we kick it up again once we get downstairs.
It'll be in like 10 minutes.
>> Okay. So, we're heading downstairs for Caitlyn, our producer, Ethan Millet, Alex Cury. will be right back but on the airwaves with KSL bright side. See you then.
Really good engagement.
