Kakching Aerodrome was a strategic airfield built by the British during World War II in Manipur, which became a focal point of fierce battles between Allied forces and the Japanese-backed Indian National Army (INA) in the 1940s; local legends suggest that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose took one of his final flights from this aerodrome before his mysterious disappearance in 1945, and today the old runway has largely disappeared beneath Assam Rifles camps and paddy fields, surviving only in collective memory.
