When nesting birds break eggs, it can indicate several factors including rough sitting behavior, first-clutch inexperience, or nest design issues; breeders may need to adjust nest box dimensions or consider artificial incubation as a solution.

Kelly The Mandarin Duck and The Nepal Kalij Pheasant SituationAdded:
[music] >> Yes.
I feed my treats to the birds. All right, you guys. We are back at it.
Thanks for joining me once again. Um I brought this apple out for the birds and I started eating it and I'm not sharing.
So, I need to I need to get rid of this thing.
But first, I want to thank you guys for joining me once again.
And uh the impeons are excited you guys are here. So, um I want to talk about a couple things, guys. Okay? Something very serious. With Kelly our mandarin hen, she keeps breaking her eggs, okay?
I go into the big aviary. She's already broken like three, maybe four.
Yeah, um I go into the big aviary in the mornings and sure enough, there's a broken egg on the ground. You know, your hens when they're sitting, they break an egg on their nest, they want to get it out of their nest so they take it off. They'll eat it or they'll, you know, they'll take it out of their nest somewhere and dump it. Well, yeah. I found a few broken eggs of Kelly's.
So, uh >> [sighs] >> what are we going to do? I'm thinking I might have to incubate them next time, okay? If um she might break all of these. I don't know. She only had like six to begin with when she started sitting. So, what are we going to do?
I I have no clue.
But um the next go around, I might incubate them and then I have to set up a wet brooder and then do all that jazz, but yeah, what can you do? What are you doing? Oh guys, look at this. You know how I like my water features, right?
Look at uh Where is she? Right there. Penny.
Jumping up on the water features.
>> [music] >> Getting herself a drink.
Uh Penny, you like that stuff?
You look beautiful up there. I wish I had the Nikon. I'd take a picture of you.
Anyways, guys, let's move along and visit some of the characters here and then we'll go see Kelly and uh maybe we'll get into that nest and check the situation. I'm I'm kind of curious of what she's got left in there. I know she's got something cuz she's still sitting, so we'll see. And also, another thing I want to point out is last year my Nepal Kalij right, my first egg I got from them was uh May 4th. Okay? Today, as I'm recording this, it is May 7th. All right?
I still haven't gotten an egg from either of my pair of Nepal Kalij. I know that I know it's coming. I know it's coming, but um I'm anticipating some eggs. So, you guys know how that is. So, we'll go visit them, too. And then, yeah, we'll visit Kelly, like I said. Peewee, want some apple, buddy?
Huh?
There you go.
Help me eat this thing. [music] I'm driving viewers nuts probably from my chewing.
Is that good, buddy?
Oh, yeah. [music] He loves his apple.
Look at that. Go to town on that bug.
The other birds are missing out.
Tahoe, it's a beautiful day, isn't it?
Want some apple, buddy?
Whatever.
Tahoe's sometimes a bummer.
Tahoe, come here.
Where you go, Tahoe?
Eat some apple, [music] buddy.
Tahoe's investigating.
No?
Wow.
What about my lady Amherst?
The son of Majestic.
Okay, now I can't eat [music] any of the apple, guys. I just dropped it.
I mean, I could, but why would I want [music] to eat an apple off the ground?
Look at this. Get it, son of Majestic.
[music] You're turning out to be just like your daddy. Telling you.
Look at [music] you.
Stunner bird.
Okay, I'm going to give you guys all this apple cuz I'm not carrying this around and getting my camera all funky with apple juice.
So, you guys have at it.
Of course you got the birds [music] get some. Everybody gets theirs around here.
Look at that. Come on.
Taste the apple for you.
Oh.
Sir Majestic, he just wants to dance with the girls.
Peedy?
I'll take note that you do appreciate apple.
Oh, there we go. We got her.
She's eating some of it.
She doesn't Oh, yeah.
Look at him.
Never gets old, guys.
Soon as he was done, the hen comes back to the apple.
Continues on eating it.
All right, you guys.
Moving along. Hi there, sweetie.
How you doing?
Everybody's chatty patty.
All right.
She's going to run off and play. [music] You know, I've got to learn not to do too many things when I'm filming, okay?
Well, by myself anyways. I mean, I got apple juice all over my hands. I got it on the camera. Yesterday I was collecting eggs. I did a little video and uh I was trying to get footage of it. Collect eggs. I was putting eggs in my pocket. So, I was breaking up these eggs. Yeah, they were breaking in my pocket. It was a mess. I was like, man, I need to get it together.
That is just like me. I try to do everything at once and it just backfires. So, got to take it easy sometimes.
All right, you guys. I got to interrupt this video for the joke of the day. Pop boy, here we go now.
What's the most reliable body part?
You give up?
Your fingers.
You can always count on them.
>> [music] >> Okay, you guys. So, this is my first year breeding Mandarin ducks.
I built Kelly's nest big enough to where if she were to jump in, she wouldn't land all the time directly on her eggs.
I think that's what's happening. I have [clears throat] built the box bigger than the recommended specs to give her plenty of room.
So, um I really don't know what the deal is with her breaking eggs.
Um I'm going to let her finish this out.
I'm not going to take what she has left.
Um she still wants to be a mom. If she abandoned the nest, I would take the eggs and try to do something then, but yeah, I don't know what's going on, guys. I don't know. I know with um you know, pheasants and chickens and peafowl and stuff like that, if they break a lot of eggs when they're sitting, they're usually just a bad mom, you know?
Um or if the eggs are different sizes, that could happen.
Um but with ducks, I don't know, maybe it's the same situation. Maybe she's just not sitting on them right. All her eggs are her own eggs, they're nobody else's eggs, so there's no different sizes or anything, so I don't know what's going on. Um maybe she's just too rough.
Hey, Manny, are we still going to be cool if I get in there and see Kelly's nest?
I know sometimes you like protecting it [music] and stuff, but uh I got to check it out, okay?
I don't really want [music] to. I really don't want to.
Albert, are you causing a problem over there, buddy?
Huh?
No.
Are you keeping an [music] eye out for her, too, just like Manny, huh?
Yeah, I don't know what's going on, guys, but I have to investigate. So, uh Okay, so if I open this door, all I'm going to see is her sitting on her nest, right? I'm not going to see anything.
I'm not going to learn anything. I'm going to disrupt her if anything. I'm not going to cause Muhammad good.
So, I'm going to give a quick peek right here through the hole, and we'll look at her then.
Cuz yeah, I changed my mind. I don't want to get into this part right here.
So, actually what would be ideal is waiting for her to get up and then checking.
You know, um I really don't know. I don't think we're going to figure out much besides what we know, but we don't have a reason. We know she's breaking the eggs. We know she's bringing them out here and when she breaks them to clear her nest of them.
Cuz she doesn't want to, you know, get her other eggs all messy or anything like that. So, we do know this, but why?
No clue. Change of plans, Manny.
We'll just see what we can see through the top here.
What do you guys see in there?
What did you guys see in there?
I don't know.
You guys got to first look tonight.
Well, I'm going to edit this and I'll see, but yeah, as of right now, I don't know what I saw in there until I edit this video. So, uh we saw a duck sitting on eggs, right?
And that's about it.
Uh hopefully we'll get some answers. I will get some footage of her when she's up next time and we'll go from there.
All right, my fine feathered friends.
Let's go visit the Nepalese see what they got going on.
All right.
There you got no >> [music] >> no eggs in there.
What's going on, little mamas?
You got HI?
You'll lay this season, don't you think?
Okay.
She said patience is a virtue.
Yeah, she said if I just waited out and be cool about it, that she'll give me 25 eggs. I think I got 23 from her last year. It's coming, guys. It's coming.
Meanwhile, let's visit the other Nepalese.
Yes.
This hen, okay.
So, this hen in here, she just turned two this year, or she's just about two right now.
So, she should be laying this year, no problems, but I don't know what's going on. She's a little late like the other Nepal Kalijian.
And that male right there, he really loves those uh that three log stump platform.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah.
He's a cool guy. I like this male.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> All right, so yeah, what's going on with Kelly? We don't know. I think she's breaking her eggs when she enters through the entrance hole. She jumps down on the eggs. Now, um that box I made, it's built to specs. If not, it's just a little bit more roomier. Is that causing a problem? I don't think so. I don't know if she's just rough. It's her first, you know, set of eggs. I got her when she was a baby. Oh, you guys know, a juvenile. So, um this is her first clutch.
So, maybe it's a first clutch thing, I don't know. Maybe she's just like any other bad bird. She's just a bad sitter.
Who knows? But, I'll keep you guys updated, keep you guys informed on how that goes. Um and uh yeah, check back in. Oh, and the Nepal Kalij, yeah, I'm just getting a little bit impatient. Sure, you know, I'm eager to get those Kalij eggs.
Um I already got three full brooders. I don't know what the rush is.
Yeah, that's about it, guys. Um thanks for checking in. I'll keep you guys updated on both those situations and uh others as well.
So, in the meantime, this is your boy Ben at Benton's Fresh Food and Tree. And if you're new here, please subscribe.
I'd appreciate it. Help our channel grow. And also, oh oh yeah, bonus thing.
I don't know if we're going to do this.
It's just kind of a topic me and my wife were talking about. It's about uh maybe doing like a little sanctuary for uh animals as well. I'm not sure yet. I don't think we're going to do it, but we were talking about it because there's a place that takes in wild animals and rehabilitates them. And um they don't have homes, you know, foster homes. It wouldn't be permanent homes. If we fostered some wild animals, it would just be until they are better to be released or they find new homes. Okay? So, it's something that we're tinkering with.
Um sounds exciting. I don't know how that's going to fit into the pheasantry, but yeah, we love animals.
Can't you guys tell? We [music] love our animals. All of my characters at the pheasantry.
And you guys know I got a lot of characters.
We'll see you guys. [music] >> [music] [music]
