[00:00:35]>> But if you guys don't know, when we started this podcast, it was supposed to be a weekly podcast where we just reviewed an old movie once a week. Yeah, that was kind of the first the idea.

[00:00:47]>> That was the idea. And then it was like people would watch along with us. It's not that we don't want to keep doing that, but we just are watching new movies all the time.

[00:00:56]>> Now we just kind of watch anything, >> anything and everything. But while Back Rooms is coming out this week, we kind of have a dead day in here that we can actually review an old movie >> for the first time in a long time.

[00:01:08]>> It's been a minute. I I feel like I mean we've done some like we did Devil Worst Prada right before Devil Worst Prada 2 came out.

[00:01:14]>> That doesn't really feel like >> it felt a little bit more like it was in lie of like I don't know the second one was coming out. So >> yeah, >> today we're talking about The Thing.

[00:01:29]>> I I need to kind of break this bad habit. Um we're talking about The Thing and this is probably the most requested movie we've had.

[00:01:37]>> I would say that or Heat. Heat is the other one. So, if you haven't listened to our letterbox top four reaction podcast, we actually have done two of them, but a ton of people have The Thing 1982 in their top four. Neither you or I had seen it. So, naturally, we said we should watch this movie.

[00:01:55]>> And so, we did.

[00:01:56]>> So, we did.

[00:01:57]>> So, we're going to talk spoilers, but really quick, non-spoiler, what did you think of this movie?

[00:02:02]>> I thought it was great. It was I This is might be the fact that I'm Gen Z and grew up in the 2000s. Okay. Every time I think of an '8s movie, I don't think bad, but I think dated.

[00:02:16]>> Yeah.

[00:02:17]>> And I think this movie is dated visually, but like plotwise, not dated at all.

[00:02:22]>> The story was still very like >> good and I was on the edge of my seat.

[00:02:27]>> Yeah. This is maybe the least dated '8s movie I've seen in a while. I'm not going to say ever.8 stuff feels more 90s than 80s.

[00:02:37]>> Yeah.

[00:02:37]>> But >> this one's 82 and this one has aged great.

[00:02:40]>> Yeah. Which by the way, I think my data perception is a wrong perception. Yes.

[00:02:44]Of this era of film.

[00:02:46]>> Fair. Fair. I think for me too, I love '8s movies. And it's a little bit of that nostalgia wave that we got with Stranger Things for example. Like >> '8s stuff is awesome.

[00:02:59]>> Yeah. And in high school, I was all into that.

[00:03:01]>> You were you were like >> I I loved 80s stuff.

[00:03:04]>> You you he was into the '8s stuff.

[00:03:05]>> I've seen a lot of And that was it was a Stranger Things thing 100%. But I kind of have cooled off on that obviously. So revisiting this I was like, man, '8s movies are kind of like a warm hug.

[00:03:16]Yeah. I just I just love a good ' 80s movie. So yeah, I love this movie. I thought the tension was great. I was like, man, I wonder if they've done more of these. And then I realized that this was based off a 1950s film. And then there was a 2011 one which is apparently not very good. So it's like oh well glad that they're not remaking this thing too much I guess. But >> this thing >> this thing >> look at you >> pun into this.

[00:03:40]>> Uh let's talk about spoilers. I feel like this let's just >> I mean this movie is 40 >> 40ish years old. Yeah. Let's just let's get right into it. I don't know. Where do you want to start?

[00:03:49]>> I mean I think what blew me away is the plot honestly. Like I when I I knew this is kind of like the start of not the start but like the birth of modern horror in the sense of like visual effects started making horror scarier >> than it could be with just practical >> and there was stuff that happened before but this was like really pioneering a lot of the creature visual effects that we see nowadays and we saw I guess we saw with Alien a little before this too.

[00:04:14]>> Oh I guess that's true.

[00:04:15]>> It was still kind of all in that same vein. So, >> um, but I mean I I knew I knew nothing about this movie really.

[00:04:23]I read two days ago because like we knew we were going to watch this about the fact that it's like shapeshifting.

[00:04:29]>> Yes.

[00:04:30]>> So, I was like, "Okay, that's interesting. That's an interesting premise."

[00:04:33]>> Um, but then like the who's the alien plot, >> I thought was sick.

[00:04:37]>> Y >> didn't really know that was in this movie, but I thought it was awesome.

[00:04:41]>> I did. And I knew some of the jump scares and everything too, just cuz like >> I knew nothing. When you watch a lot of YouTube about movies in high school, you just kind of sponge a bunch of stuff about movies. Oh, the fire is really going.

[00:04:53]>> I know.

[00:04:54]>> Um I I knew some of the jump scares, but it didn't diminish this movie at all for me. I really enjoyed it.

[00:05:00]>> Um I do think the setting honestly stuck out to me a ton because I was like, man, >> like this is the setting, the this Arctic lab thing and this is what we're doing. These are where all the people are. You can't leave basically. And so it makes like it's a small setting for a film and it has just these characters and it's all about these interactions.

[00:05:21]It's great. So I loved it.

[00:05:24]>> I mean we'll we'll talk about the effects too, but I really liked the plot of this movie a ton. So >> I thought I mean I think what you say is true. Like it's very self-contained in a good way.

[00:05:34]>> Um I thought all the characters were like their performances all around were great.

[00:05:38]Everyone felt very real and different enough to stand out >> to where it wasn't like >> you have like the three main characters and then just a bunch of other >> scientist people. Yes.

[00:05:48]>> It was very like everyone was very distinct in their personality and different like angles of the way they wanted to approach the issue.

[00:05:55]>> Agreed. And I mean at the same time while everybody is kind of fleshed out and distinct in a certain way Kurt Russell it's Kurt Russell versus. So, I thought that like he's a pretty great protagonist. Very smart, street smart, all the things. So, liked that a ton.

[00:06:12]>> Yeah.

[00:06:12]>> Really quick, if you're watching on YouTube, sorry for the gear shift. The lens is fogging up.

[00:06:17]>> It's just kind of it's part for the course right now. The weather is crazy here.

[00:06:21]>> The weather is awful currently. So, we're making we're doing the best we can right now.

[00:06:24]>> We Rain is falling on this fire and trying to put it out.

[00:06:29]>> But we will not let it.

[00:06:30]>> We say no, we're going to review the thing for y'all. Um, so I think let's talk about the effects really quick.

[00:06:36]>> Yeah, let's do it.

[00:06:37]>> I'm gonna say while there's a little bit of like 80s cheese, yes, these are a little bit I don't know. You said dated.

[00:06:47]I think like in some ways they're laughable or like the idea of '8s effects can kind of be like this is funny that this is the puppet that I'm looking at.

[00:06:55]>> Yeah. Yeah. And a lot of it's endearing, like ET, which is kind of a comparison film to this one in a lot of different ways. But I think when I watched this, there were genuine moments that despite this movie being 43 years old, I was like, that is disgusting.

[00:07:12]>> Yeah. I mean, it's true. I think I mean, even just like the design of the creature corre.

[00:07:19]>> Yes. Yes.

[00:07:20]>> And I know like Oh, this is a puppet.

[00:07:23]This is made of bubble gum. like whatever, >> right?

[00:07:26]>> Still pretty gross. Like the dog scene in the beginning of this movie was disgusting.

[00:07:29]>> Yeah, that was pretty gnarly.

[00:07:30]>> So, and a great kind of character introduction for the thing itself, too.

[00:07:35]>> Yeah. No, I agree.

[00:07:36]>> Like very like, oh, if this thing gets a hold of humans, it's game over.

[00:07:40]>> It's Yeah. GG's.

[00:07:41]>> Um, but yeah, I thought those effects were great. Any that you were like, oh, this is awesome. Um, I thought the effects in general were great. I think I mean I thought the design of the melded humans >> oh my gosh >> thought was great. Um super scary.

[00:07:59]>> Yes.

[00:08:00]>> I thought I mean all just like the weird amalgamation of biological fluids is this creature.

[00:08:09]>> Disgusting.

[00:08:10]>> I thought it was very well done. Yes.

[00:08:11]>> You keep talking. I'm going to go put a towel on our camera.

[00:08:13]>> Yeah. Go do it.

[00:08:14]>> As we continue.

[00:08:15]>> Um I'm I'm going to touch on this. This is kind of shifting more to the story. I mean, we could talk about the effects for a while. I think there's a lot of gross awesome stuff in this. Um, but something you brought up, Drew, which I'll wait for you to talk about when you come back, is the stakes of this movie and how they were very well explained and like the stakes are very well known that like, hey, if this thing gets out gets out, it is game over for the world.

[00:08:42]>> And so, there's an element of like, hey, we all want to survive. Then there's an element of we don't know who is what.

[00:08:48]>> And then the last element is like >> if if it comes to it like we all got to die because we want to save the world.

[00:08:54]>> Yeah.

[00:08:54]>> And then some of these people are the thing. So it's a crazy dynamic that this movie establishes very well.

[00:09:02]>> And I think this movie is very short.

[00:09:04]>> Yes.

[00:09:04]>> Well, I mean not very short, but like an hour 48. It's not >> It is a brisk hour 48.

[00:09:09]>> Not super fast.

[00:09:10]>> Like honestly, the movie fly like flew by for me. I don't know if it did for you. I think this movie like establishes stakes very well.

[00:09:18]>> Yes.

[00:09:18]>> And then ex like I don't think a single frame of this movie is wasted. Nope.

[00:09:23]>> I think everything is perfectly structured and paced.

[00:09:26]>> Um and it doesn't feel like anything needs to be added.

[00:09:29]>> No, I I didn't want anything more like >> more interactions with the scientists and people at the lab would have been too much. More thing kills would have been too much.

[00:09:38]>> I think even more exposition about the alien.

[00:09:40]>> Yeah. I mean, I liked that it was very much show don't tell like this is what the alien does and they did enough explaining of like this is what the genes do and this is how the alien works but it was just yeah I agree perfect amount >> and I mean there was even I can't remember who said this but like there was a line in the movie of like they were like how does this freaking thing work and they're like we don't know it's from space. Yes.

[00:10:01]>> I'm like that's all you need to say.

[00:10:02]>> I'm like that great. I I accept that.

[00:10:05]>> Here's the situation. Here's kind of what the alien does. Now, we're going to get into the character interactions and the action, and it's great. Like, they do not waste any time on like >> honestly the nerdy stuff and leaving a lot of it unknown like a good horror movie does makes it a little scarier.

[00:10:21]So, yeah, if they explained the exact scientific process of the thing, like we don't know enough. And that's why when the characters are trying to solve like how do we figure this out, we're going to do the blood test. You're kind of figuring it out with them. Y it's just well done. I like I can't say anything more. So, >> I thought the blood test That scene was so tense.

[00:10:39]>> Yes.

[00:10:39]>> I thought it was great.

[00:10:40]>> Yes.

[00:10:41]>> Um and again, I mean, we've said this kind of before when talking about horror, and I think specifically 28 is where we kind of mentioned this thematic element a lot. Oh, it's collapsed.

[00:10:53]>> Um but I think the best part of horror is that it can kind of bring out the true humans in society's characters.

[00:11:03]>> Yes. Um, you see that in 28 a lot and I think here it's like you really see who's who's who in the midst of their fear and kind of their terror.

[00:11:15]>> Yes.

[00:11:16]>> Um I think the scene where Kurt Russell shoots I don't even remember his name.

[00:11:22]The guy who loved the dogs.

[00:11:23]>> Yes.

[00:11:24]>> But then he turned out to be human.

[00:11:25]>> Yeah.

[00:11:26]>> You're like oh my gosh. Like and then one of the other guys like you are a murderer now. And you're like wow there's so much tension here. But then like also he was getting attacked.

[00:11:36]It's not bad. But >> you also see where the guy who lived the dogs like you see where he was coming from too of like this guy might very well be the thing. I'm going to step up and kill him and we need a better leader. Like >> yeah great dynamics.

[00:11:50]>> The dynamics here were awesome. The blood test scene was awesome.

[00:11:53]>> It was great. It was really really great. And when they're all tied to the chair and the thing is like >> I know you're like oh my gosh.

[00:11:59]>> Oh my gosh. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:12:00]>> It's it's crazy. So, um, I thought a lot of the kills were really, really great.

[00:12:04]Like the monsters kills.

[00:12:06]>> Yeah, I thought it was, too.

[00:12:07]>> Um, I mean, really quick, this movie is great visually, and I know we've said that about like the effects and everything, but man, the the snow setting and just the vibes are so good.

[00:12:17]>> Yeah, I think it is.

[00:12:18]>> I love it. But, um, I have two things I want to talk about, but they're kind of joined together. I I want to talk about the ending.

[00:12:25]>> Yes.

[00:12:25]>> And kind of the third act where they go find the doctor, right? Who is the thing? Who's the thing? Where is he?

[00:12:32]>> That's his name, maybe.

[00:12:34]>> Yes. Yes. Um, and they're trying to find Blair.

[00:12:37]>> They go to this like underground thing, whatever.

[00:12:40]>> I feel like that sequence was super tense.

[00:12:42]>> Yeah.

[00:12:43]>> Despite we've been through an hour and 20 minutes of tension, still super tense. But what did you think of all of that?

[00:12:48]>> I thought it was great. Um, I think Yeah, I mean, I thought it was great. I thought the big I don't know what you call it. The the thing I guess was like him in his full form I thought was great.

[00:13:04]>> Mhm.

[00:13:04]>> Um I like that we kept whittling down people and like we kind of got to this core >> Yes.

[00:13:10]>> group. I did think >> the black guy I don't remember his name.

[00:13:15]>> Yes I do.

[00:13:15]>> But when he walked off I was kind of like brother why are we doing that? Like >> I It's just a horror trope of like a random character walks off into a hallway.

[00:13:24]>> Yes.

[00:13:25]>> For kicks.

[00:13:25]>> There's a little bit of that. But >> so that I was like that's like why are you doing that?

[00:13:29]>> It does not ruin this movie.

[00:13:30]>> No, I think it's fine. But I'm like you know that Kurt Russell's good. Kurt Russell knows that you are good.

[00:13:34]>> Yes. Why >> Why are we separating now?

[00:13:36]>> No, I have no idea. Are you talking about Child? Are you talking about NS?

[00:13:40]>> He was a guy in the beanie who was who's the chef?

[00:13:42]>> I think it's NS who you're talking about. Um, yeah. I didn't catch all these characters named character names except for McCrady. Um, >> is that Kurt Russell?

[00:13:50]>> Yeah, that's Kurt Russell.

[00:13:51]>> No, >> I don't think I catch a single one except for Blair.

[00:13:54]>> But you, that's the thing. You don't really need them.

[00:13:55]>> No, you don't need to.

[00:13:56]>> This movie does a great job of these are the characters and you know them through enough of this guy loves dogs or whatever. So, um I think that sequence into the end the end where I mean everything's kind of blown up and then it's for Russell and then it's Child's who's the guy that went off.

[00:14:15]>> This was awesome.

[00:14:16]>> This ending was awesome.

[00:14:17]>> I to me this made the movie and I know like the movie was great up until here but like >> to end on this note and I was like are they going to end on this ambiguous note and they do I'm like that's awesome.

[00:14:27]>> I don't want to say it's like really ahead of its time but it's >> it kind of is though. I mean, that ambiguous ending was really popular.

[00:14:33]It's been really popular over the last 20 years, and The Thing kind of did it first.

[00:14:37]>> Like, I was thinking about Inception after I watched this movie because I'm like, Inception probably got some inspo from The Thing to a certain extent, you know, like I I mean, not saying that exactly, but very ambiguous ending. Same with I mean, Shadow Island.

[00:14:51]>> Yeah, it's very similar.

[00:14:52]>> So, it's crazy though cuz I think there's like four different ways that it could go.

[00:14:56]>> Yeah.

[00:14:57]>> It's like either they're both human.

[00:14:58]>> Yes. One of them is the thing. Yes.

[00:15:00]>> And they're about to get merked.

[00:15:01]>> Yes.

[00:15:02]>> Or the other one of them's a thing. Or they're both the thing.

[00:15:05]>> Yes. Which I I want to bring this comment up because we got a comment on one of our last episodes. This is from Papa Glucose.

[00:15:12]>> And he said, "My thing, hot take." Shout out Papa Glucose. The thing >> name by the way. That's awesome.

[00:15:18]>> Yeah, it's awesome. The thing is in his top four.

[00:15:20]>> Um he says that McCreaty was the thing from nearly the start of the movie. Uh, what we see in the finale is two offshoots of the thing fighting over their plan of attack.

[00:15:32]That is a crazy theory and I love it.

[00:15:34]>> I love it. But I also think there's a couple holes. Papa Glucose. I'm just going to call you Papa for short. Um, hole one, he tests his own blood.

[00:15:42]>> He does do that, but but one, we never saw who got into the blood. And two, I mean, it he could have switched out the blood with someone else.

[00:15:52]>> True. I guess that's true. Hole two. He was flaming the thing and destroying the thing the whole movie, >> right? But like once it attaches to a new entity, it like kind of clones itself into that entity.

[00:16:06]>> I understand. But it also doesn't want to hurt itself or it like it has a a visceral reaction to pain cuz we saw that in the blood.

[00:16:15]>> Well, okay.

[00:16:16]>> But then the idea is like what if let's say McCreat is the thing the whole time.

[00:16:20]Okay. Okay.

[00:16:20]>> He's trying to gain all these humans trust and like also latch on to these other humans. And so >> he keeps their trust and also >> tries to kill all the humans. And so like in that process he kills other the things which is it's a super bleak version of >> it is super depressing. Um okay but I'm gonna I don't know. Here's the thing.

[00:16:46]when he attacks the blood. I don't remember.

[00:16:50]>> I don't know a single name. Um >> it's okay. It's okay.

[00:16:52]>> The guy who was they were all tied up in the chair and it was >> he was the one that was the thing.

[00:16:57]>> The sheriff, right? I think it was the sheriff.

[00:16:59]>> Sure.

[00:17:00]>> Cuz when he attacks his blood, then the sheriff like explodes.

[00:17:03]>> Sure.

[00:17:04]>> So, >> yes, >> that makes me think if I It's like the high mine in Stranger Things, right?

[00:17:09]Well, >> at least season two, they don't really continue that, but that's okay. When you attack part of the thing, the other part of the thing freaks out.

[00:17:19]>> Yeah. Okay. I can get behind that.

[00:17:21]>> So, I don't really know. I think it's super interesting on like a conceptual level, but >> yeah. And I mean, that's part of the strength of this movie is we don't really know how this alien works and so the ambiguity is heightened by not knowing how this alien works. So, >> I want to hear Papa Glucose all of your reasoning behind it.

[00:17:39]>> Yeah, for sure. So, and if other people have other takes of like this is the ending to me, I kind of read it straight of like Child's is a thing. McCrady is not. I followed the >> Really? You thought he was a thing?

[00:17:52]>> Child's at the end. Oh, yeah. Totally.

[00:17:56]>> I don't know if I do.

[00:18:18]>> I can I can get behind it, but like I also and I know you know the filmmakers have said different things whether you're the cinematographer or director or whatever. Uh they have said different things on the light in the eyes, but early in the movie, >> if a person doesn't have a little light in the eyes, they are the thing.

[00:18:39]>> This is like a a stated thing about this movie.

[00:18:43]>> At the end of the movie, and I know they said at the end of the movie, we kind of just didn't really care anymore and we just did it whenever we felt like it, right?

[00:18:50]>> But Child doesn't have a light in his eyes and McCrady does. So, I think this movie is going to benefit from a lot of rewatches for me, though, because I'm going to try to read it different ways.

[00:19:00]Like, what if this scene or what if Kurt Russell is the thing the whole time?

[00:19:04]>> Yeah.

[00:19:04]>> Like, how am I going to read this movie?

[00:19:06]So, I don't know.

[00:19:08]>> I read it as Kurt Russell was a thing and Child's wasn't.

[00:19:12]>> That's what I said.

[00:19:14]>> Wait, >> I I said Child's is a thing. Kurt Russell was not.

[00:19:17]>> No, I'm in the opposite boat.

[00:19:19]>> Oh, wait. You're saying that >> I think child is not the thing >> and Kurt Russell is >> Kurt Russell is >> Whoa. What?

[00:19:24]>> Yeah.

[00:19:25]>> Okay.

[00:19:25]>> I mean, my only logic was like from what we've seen, the lab is clear when they leave.

[00:19:32]>> Yes.

[00:19:32]>> And Child stays. He says he basically says if Blair comes back, shoot him.

[00:19:37]>> That's like the last line we we have from Child's. Yeah. Or delivered to Child.

[00:19:41]>> Yeah.

[00:19:42]>> And he stays in a clean lab.

[00:19:44]>> That's fair. And then Kurt Russell does not stay in a clean bunker. Was exposed to the thing.

[00:19:49]>> That is fair. But >> so I don't know.

[00:19:51]>> The other thing could be that you know Childs has been infected for a while.

[00:19:57]>> That's true.

[00:19:58]>> But did they tested his blood though?

[00:19:59]>> Didn't they?

[00:20:00]>> Yes. But then that's where Rewatch stuff like really We also never found out who messed with the blood. We never found that out.

[00:20:06]>> No, it was the sheriff cuz he he was the thing and he had the keys.

[00:20:11]>> Yeah. Okay. Okay. Maybe.

[00:20:13]>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But if there were two, who knows what would have happened with some of that blood.

[00:20:16]>> Yeah, true.

[00:20:17]>> So true.

[00:20:19]>> Oh, that's true.

[00:20:19]>> It just gets really weird. That's I think that's why this movie is going to be super rewatchable.

[00:20:23]>> This movie was great.

[00:20:24]>> I could spend a lot of time on Reddit looking at theories. So, >> yeah, >> I may do that after this podcast, but um I digress. Let us know your theories on the ending >> for sure.

[00:20:51]>> This movie has been out for 43 years.

[00:20:53]>> It's true.

[00:20:54]>> And so, for the first time in Soul My Line History, I did something Drew.

[00:20:59]>> I watched a movie on streaming >> full well knowing that I would probably end up wanting to buy it on Blu-ray.

[00:21:04]>> Oh, I didn't know this. Okay, continue.

[00:21:06]And I was like, "Ah, I could go buy it on Blu-ray, but no, I'll just rent it for $4 on Apple because it wasn't free on streaming anywhere." So, I rented it.

[00:21:14]Great. Whatever. I go to Barnes & Noble today, just kind of on a whim. Then I see on the amazing shelf of Barnes & Noble, I see a crisp copy of The Thing, which was $5 cheaper than it was on Amazon. And I made a great decision to purchase The Thing on Blu-ray.

[00:21:32]>> I thought you bought this before you watched it.

[00:21:34]>> No, I did not. So in reality today you have spent $15 on the thing correct >> as of today. Yeah. So I kind of >> THE SAME PRICE AS THE AMAZON.

[00:21:44]>> OKAY, you got me. But I don't regret it.

[00:21:46]I do not regret it one.

[00:21:47]>> Okay, fair enough.

[00:21:48]>> And yes, could I upgrade to the 4K at some point? I might wait for a steelbook. Honestly, I've been on a steelbook kick. But >> I think steelbooks are so sick.

[00:21:55]>> They are. I've been doing the Jiblly ones recently and I love them. But I am very pleased with this purchase and I'm going to pop this in the Blu-ray player with my brother and dad and re-watch it this week. So, I'm stoked.

[00:22:06]>> I also completely agree with your purchase and I think Blu-ray is the answer to our question.
