Neptune's Moon Is Being Destroyed Right Now

[00:00:00]Neptune's largest moon is orbiting backward and it's the only one in the entire solar system doing it. Scientists just realized [music] this doomed moon was captured from deep space and is being slowly pulled apart [music] and we can watch it happen in real time. This moon is called Triton. And when the Voyager 2 spacecraft [music] flew by Neptune in 1989, it discovered something wild. While every other large moon in our solar system orbits in the same direction as its planet spins, Triton does the exact [music] opposite.

[00:00:29]It goes retrograde, moving backward through space. This told scientists something incredible. Triton wasn't born orbiting Neptune. Instead, it was a rogue object from the Kyper [music] belt. That distant ring of icy bodies beyond Pluto, and Neptune's gravity captured [music] it millions of years ago. But here's the dark part. That backward orbit is unstable.

[00:00:50]Neptune's gravity is constantly pulling on Triton, creating [music] immense stress that's slowly spiraling the moon inward. And in about 3.6 billion years, Triton will cross something called the Ro limit. That's the point where gravitational forces become [music] so powerful that the moon will be completely shredded apart. When that happens, Triton won't [music] just disappear. It will transform into an entirely new ring system around Neptune, potentially more spectacular than Saturn's rings. So right now across the solar system, one of the most dramatic cosmic destruction events is already in progress.
