LASG Re-Affirms Commitment To Recycling InitiativesAdded:
Lagos State generates above 2,000 metric tons of revenues on a daily basis.
Rather than seeing it as a challenge, the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has initiated measures to ensure that it becomes an advantage which can be explored to the benefit of everyone.
At the ongoing 2026 ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, the state commissioner for environment and water resources, Mr. Tunji Bello Wahab, reels out the major steps taken in the seventh year of the current administration in moving from the linear collect and dump at landfill site to a long-term goal that sees waste as a resource.
Memorandum of understanding with different and capable companies, both locally and internationally, are already in place to reduce the quantum of waste that gets to the different landfill sites.
The ministry, as part of its waste conversion initiative, also commissioned the waste-to-energy biodigester plant at the Gbagada Food Market in February 2026.
It's designed to process organic waste generated within the market using anaerobic digestion technology.
It converts biodegradable waste into biogas for cooking and energy use.
The fertilizer for agricultural application. The plant processes 0.5 tons of organic waste per day and generates 30 kW of electricity daily.
Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, on its part, successfully completed 114 installation of air quality sensors and rehabilitation of air pollution abatement facilities across the state.
The Lagos State Waste Water Management Office, LASWACO, has developed an innovative digital solution.
The Waste Water Information Management System, WIMS, is a web-based application that provides real-time updates, ensures data accuracy, and enables seamless operations across LASWACO services and regulatory processes. The newly introduced monthly sanitation exercise is also one of the achievements for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. The Commissioner says 931 persons were apprehended for waste management offenses. 1,711 contravention notices were issued to defaulters and the confiscation of about 5 million worth of banned styrofoam.
The quest for a re-enactment of the symbolism and consciousness that the monthly environmental sanitation represents in the psyche of the average resident of Lagos before its suspension is very apt woman. The Ministry continue to enforce the total ban on the distribution, sales, and usage of styrofoam with the confiscation of about 5 million worth of banned styrofoam and SUPs, that's single-use plastics, from warehouses and malls.
It also removed a total of 137,530.94 kg of PET plastic from the environment in 2025.
With the ongoing construction of over 100 km of secondary collector drain and 30 km of primary channels, government reassures residents of mitigating flood disaster across the metropolis and also warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in order to achieve a cleaner Lagos.
