[00:02:21]The neighborhood that we lived in, it was so great. We lived [music] four houses away from my mom and dad. The kids could walk down to their grandparents. It was big, [music] it was spacious. They had their rooms, they had a playroom. Why did we even move from that house? That house was perfect.

[00:02:40]My word. I tell you, this lady needs to concentrate on the present, not live in the past.

[00:02:46]Nana was part of our life [music] forever. She was my nanny growing up, and the nanny for my children. She was with my family for 30 years.

[00:02:56]About 10 months [music] ago, Nana had a lump in her breast.

[00:03:02]It was breast cancer.

[00:03:05]Nana passed away.

[00:03:08]You know, this is so sad. This woman has so much to deal with.

[00:03:12]And it's destroying her and her kids.

[00:03:15]The home we're in now is very [music] small. Children are in rooms two by twos. This is actually my room, my bed.

[00:03:25]I get maybe four hours of broken sleep a [music] night.

[00:03:29]That really takes its toll.

[00:03:32]Over a year on a couch, she seriously must need sleep.

[00:03:37]There's no discipline in the house. I need you to sit down for a minute.

[00:05:52]And it drove Elspeth nuts.

[00:06:03]MOM ACTUALLY unscrewed the doorknob just to get Daily out.

[00:06:08]Stop, Daily. You're going to hurt somebody.

[00:06:23]Having seen that there was no discipline in the house, I wanted [music] to talk to mom to find out just how long she'd been letting it slip for.

[00:06:30]The excuse card, which I'm I'm going to play, is the divorce, the move, Nana dying. Because when [music] they're, you know, when the divorce happened, Nana kept it together.

[00:06:43]Right, okay.

[00:06:43]>> She kept me together. Right, okay. Of course, of course. It has been overwhelming.

[00:06:50]Of course. I want her back.

[00:06:54]As a nanny, you become an integral part of a family. So, I could relate >> [music] >> how devastated this whole family were when they lost dear Nana. So, she was a giant staple.

[00:07:09]>> [music] >> We still think about Nana a lot. Nana was a part of our family. Every day, coming home from school, Nana would sit on the front porch and wait for everybody. [music] Yeah, that was nice, huh?

[00:07:27]In fact, Daily showed me a very special object he'd been given by Nana. My mom got it from Nana, and Nana told her to give it to me.

[00:07:40]Cuz I have an idea for this.

[00:07:43]And I knew that Nana's rock would come in handy later on.

[00:07:55]We're not going to have a baba right now.

[00:08:15]SO, he has as many bottles now at the age of three and a half, six to eight bottles, as a three-week, four-week old as a newborn baby would have.

[00:08:27]I personally recommend that parents let go of the bottle with their children when they reach about 12 to 18 months.

[00:08:34]>> [crying] >> Finn's perfectly capable of drinking out of a cup. He doesn't need a bottle, but the bad habit continues because his mother won't break it for him.

[00:08:49]So, at the moment, what mom's doing is teaching Finn to ask for a bottle when he shouts and yells, which is, you know, wrong. All right.

[00:09:15]Later on in the day, I saw there isn't much order with regards to food.

[00:09:31]Sweets, raisins? What's all that going on in there?

[00:09:52]They've got all sorts growing underneath there. Aiden lost a cheese sandwich under Mom doesn't reinforce anything. Let alone have responsibilities for these kids so they can tidy up after themselves and keep a home they're proud of.

[00:10:10]So who does all the washing and everything? My mom. Your mom, okay. Do you guys do any of you guys have chores and things? Do you all do things?

When we want money, we ask mom to do chores, but There's not much respect right now for her new home and she's finding it very hard to come to terms with leaving the old house >> [music] >> and now being in the new one. [00:13:03]Now I've seen people speak to waitresses better than what these kids were speaking to their mom. I'm getting drinks right now. Get me this, bring me that. I mean, where are the kids' manners?

[00:13:51]>> [music] >> Right now I'm feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, tired and I knew that Joe was going to tell me some things that were going to be really hard to hear about moving on.

[00:14:16]So who's going to do it? Because Nana's not here anymore and Nana did it.

[00:14:21]When you got the divorce, Nana slipped into that role.

[00:14:36]Why is Finn still having bottles like a three-week-old baby? Cuz it's easier than hearing [music] him scream. And it's just one battle that I don't have to face. But from what from where I stand, it's not like you're prepared to fight any battle.

[00:14:55]>> House space, >> [snorts] >> okay? You lived in this big house that you loved and over the years you built up memories in that home.

[00:15:06]And now you're in this home that's not ideal for you because you've been used to things a certain way.

[00:15:12]But you're sleeping on the couch, not getting a good night's sleep, >> [music] >> which is crazy to me because you've lost all pride and self-respect.

[00:15:21]>> Yes. I mean I don't I mean seriously, why won't [music] you clean your home? We vacuum a couple times a day. There's no way. Well, no way cuz the the We couldn't find we couldn't find the vacuum cleaner for three days.

[00:15:46]Because right now I need a woman opposite me. I need a woman, okay? And a mother. But let me tell you something.

[00:18:33]Once the storm had passed and Blythe and I had dried off a little bit, >> Let's get in the car. Okay. I wanted to start teaching straight away. [music] So I took her on a little trip. We're going to drive to the old house.

[00:18:49]When Joe told me where we were going, I thought I want to turn around.

[00:18:57]I don't want to >> [music] >> walk back on the grass, but I sat there and played with the kids so many times. I don't want to go back there unless it's my home. I want to go back there and miraculously have it be what it was before.

[00:19:14]Once outside the house, there was a favorite spot that mom had and she took me to it and there was [music] a message on the wall.

[00:19:23]>> It's kind of faded cuz of the rain. The rain's washed it off. Oh, look. [music] The O, the V, the E. They snuck out the back and snuck out the side gate to come and do it.

[00:19:36]And then they came in and their hands were muddy and I said, "What have you done?" And they're like, "Nothing."

[00:19:43]That's fabulous.

[00:19:45]My head gets that it's just four walls and a roof. My heart is in a totally different place. You say goodbye to a house now, but you don't say goodbye [music] to your memories. You remember them. They stay in your heart. You take those with you and you create new ones in your new home.

[00:20:03]She needed to make a decision in her heart as well as her mind >> [music] >> that she was going to create new memories in her new home.

[00:20:12]So, I asked Mom to go, "Bye house." Just to say it, just to [music] let herself say it so that she could hear her own voice. "Bye house."

[00:20:20]Because I'm about to create a new home now with my family. What are you letting go of?

[00:20:25]Just [music] the house. Exactly. What are you keeping? I'm keeping the memories.

[00:20:30]>> Yeah, of course you're keeping the memories. We don't let go of the memories.

[00:20:32]>> to my house, [music] to this house. Goodbye to this house.

[00:20:37]Goodbye house.

[00:20:39]I have a new home now. You too. I said goodbye to the house, not [music] the memories.

[00:20:44]Because those are mine.

[00:20:46]Mom's going to have to find the [music] strength from somewhere to push through everything that's going on right now.

[00:20:52]And so, I decided to get Daily and Mom together. You really worry about Mom, don't you?

[00:21:00]>> Yeah, of course. And you love Mom very much and you worry about her. And then when she gets upset, you get upset.

[00:21:05]Yeah. Yeah, exactly. So, you're part of one big family. Mom can't just do this on her own, okay? It takes you as a grown-up boy as well to understand [music] what's going on. Now, when you and I spoke the other day, we spoke [music] about Nana and we spoke about the fun times. And it makes you feel sad all the time, right? Yeah.

[00:21:26]Yeah. So, a lot of children ask, "Why why did it have to happen?" He and Nana were so close.

[00:21:33]There was this bond between the [music] two of them.

[00:21:37]Why did it have to happen to Nana?

[00:21:41]I don't know.

[00:21:42]I don't I wish I knew.

[00:21:46]Yeah, me too.

[00:21:47]My mommy had breast cancer the same [music] as Nana.

[00:21:51]And and it was very aggressive as well.

[00:21:53]And and she didn't survive.

[00:21:57]It's sad because, you know, we feel lost.

[00:22:01]During my observation day, I became [music] aware that Nana had left a rock for Daily that had the word strength.

[00:22:11]And when I saw that, I knew I'd be able to use this rock in a very powerful way.

[00:22:16]And Nana was a very wise woman because Nana left you this rock and it says strength. This is certainly what she's asking the whole family to have, strength.

[00:22:27]Now, Mommy's going to need a lot of strength to put [music] things back on track, right? Yeah. Yeah.

[00:22:32]I think this might be a good idea if you >> [music] >> lend this to Mom for a while so she can carry it around in her pocket.

[00:22:44]Love you, Mom.

[00:22:47]Thank you. He's a very brave guy. He's an amazing guy to give it to me. And you know what? If he can give it to me, he must believe in me.

[00:22:55]When times get tough, she can pull out that rock and and recognize what it symbolizes, [music] Mom being that rock. So, where's the rock? Right here.

[00:23:09]>> [screaming] [laughter] >> Finn started crying saying [music] that he wanted a bottle.

[00:23:18]There was going to be no great time to get rid of the bottles. So, don't be a glutton for punishment. GET RID OF THEM and leave them.

[00:23:26]Finny, we're going to throw our bottles away and drink out of a big boy cup. Okay?

[00:23:32]Finn went into this whole huge fit. And then that led to a total meltdown.

[00:23:39]>> [crying] >> I thought, "I'm ruining his life. This is like going to be one of those life-changing moments that this child is going to be in therapy in for the rest of his life because I took his bottles away."

[00:23:53]>> [screaming] >> I was literally to the point where I thought, "Just forget it.

[00:23:59]Just just forget it. I can't do this. This is too hard."

[00:24:04]>> [screaming] >> Finny, we're going to throw our bottles away and drink out of a big boy cup.

[00:24:10]Okay? I made a decision that Finn was going to come off the bottles and [music] it was as simple as that.

[00:24:16]>> [screaming] [crying] >> I'm like any mother. Her child is hurting. It makes your heart break. It's your weakness. And I just wanted to give in.

[00:24:32]That does penetrate when you have to listen to a child cry and scream the way Finn does.

[00:24:37]But eventually, he stopped.

[00:24:41]I was very surprised with how quickly it all came to an end. All of a sudden, he's laughing because we're playing hide and seek under the covers.

[00:24:54]He stopped.

[00:24:55]He stopped. He stopped.

[00:24:57]>> [laughter] >> All right. And you know what?

[00:24:59]And you know what? And tonight, he may cry and then you're just have to listen to it and push through it and then he'll stop. Okay. I'm looking now.

[00:25:10]And then a magic moment.

[00:25:12]He asked for a glass of juice.

[00:25:14]You hold the juice. Can I have a glass of juice? I felt like I had won the lottery.

[00:25:20]Ah, you did it.

[00:25:22]You did it. You are such a big boy.

[00:25:24]>> [music] >> So, now it's time to get Mom some help around the house. Mom, on a piece of paper, I would like you to write down all the chores that would be helpful if the kids did them. Okay? The fact that some of these kids are 13, 11, and 9 and have never ever done any chores blows me away to be honest with you. Guys, come downstairs, everybody. We're having a meeting.

[00:25:48]>> [music] >> So, this was a time for Mom to assert herself and get busy with these kids.

[00:25:52]But considering [music] they've never picked up anything themselves, it was going to be a little bit of trouble. Cuz I can't do it all anymore, guys. Every person has to make their bed before they go to school in the morning.

[00:26:02]>> Oh, man.

[00:26:03]>> And Lochlyn and Aiden, you are responsible for cleaning your bathroom.

[00:26:07]That is where you're going >> I'm not letting them in there.

[00:26:09]>> Deal. Deal. You three have the other bathroom. Or you four.

[00:26:14]Guys, these are the rules. This isn't like a discussion right now.

[00:26:19]But what we are going to do is we're going to tag team the kids, all right?

[00:26:23]To help Mom delegate the chores, [music] she wrote down on a piece of card the job that the team needed to do. You two are going to be a team and you're going to go clean the bathroom upstairs.

[00:26:33][music] >> The kids would have matching ribbons and when they had finished, they would hand in those colored ribbons afterwards. You three have the OTHER BATHROOM.

[00:26:43]>> [laughter] >> NO BUTS.

[00:26:48]I DON'T LIKE cleaning up. Even if, you know, the kids don't like it, I know it's like really good for my mom. Like it's for the best.

[00:26:59]For the first time to really do chores, they did really well. Once they got going, I got it.

[00:27:05]They just did it. Great job.

[00:27:10]It is nice to see the kids all pulling [music] together with Mom. However, she is still sleeping on the sofa and I think that's wrong. [music] As a mother, you have done what every other mother would have done, okay? You prioritized the children's sleep. But you do want a bed to be able to sleep in, obviously.

[00:27:26]Because there's no [music] spare bedrooms, it makes sense to put her in Lochlyn and Aiden's bedroom. And so, I snuck off to the shops, got what I needed for her to bring back.

[00:27:39]>> [music] >> So, what we all did as a family was to put two girls' bunk beds together.

[00:27:46]>> [cheering] >> I'm glad that she got a room. Like she was she's able to room with me and my sister.

[00:27:52]Setting up the bedroom today was [music] really fun. It was everybody in there together.

[00:28:01]>> [laughter] >> The nice thing was is that when they finished, all the kids jumped on the bed to join her.

[00:28:09]Do you know how long it's been since I've been able to say [music] to my kids, "Come lie down in bed with me.

[00:28:14]Let's just hang out."

[00:28:16]It was a good thing for my mom to get a bed. Oh, guess what?

[00:28:20]You're not sitting on my bed anymore.

[00:28:23]>> [laughter] >> And then it was dinner [music] time and I knew I wanted to make some changes. In the old house, they used to have a family [music] tradition of talking about the best and the worst part of their day.

[00:28:38]But since she's moved to the new home, she hasn't done that. And yet the kids absolutely loved it.

[00:28:44]I'm thankful that we're all here together.

[00:28:47]I'm thankful for each one of you and for the happiness you bring to my life.

And what I thought would be a wonderful idea [music] for all of you would be to celebrate and honor the life of Nana. Her spirit, the woman who she was.

[00:39:33]What if >> [music] >> at this walk one woman decides to do a self-breast exam and someone doesn't die from this disease then Nana didn't die vain, and [music] I like to say that Nana got a little heavy.

[00:39:50]We'll just carry each other through the hard times and smile through the good times.
