Ching Shih (1775-1844) was the most powerful pirate commander in human history, commanding over 1,800 ships and an estimated 80,000 sailors in the South China Sea. Born into poverty in Canton, she took command of the Red Flag Fleet after her husband Zheng Yi Sao's death in 1807. Despite facing the British Navy, Portuguese merchants, and the Qing Dynasty's imperial fleet, she was never defeated or captured. In 1810, she negotiated her own terms, securing pardons for most of her crew while keeping her wealth, and retired peacefully. She died of old age around 1844 without trial, prison, or execution, making her one of the most successful military commanders in Chinese history.
