Film composers intentionally use real acoustic instruments and non-traditional recording environments to create authentic, lived-in soundscapes that capture specific textures like 'dust' in the audio, rather than relying on synthesized sounds.

Dust in the soundAñadido:
When they thought about the score, unsurprisingly, the real mantra and the motto was make this thing feel lived in.
Specifically, what he said is that they wanted to capture some dust. Capture some dust in the sound. And you kind of feel that. They really were intentional about trying to use like real instruments, not letting this thing be synth-driven, though it is textural in some parts. The vast majority of what you hear is real old dusty upright pianos and then flutes and whatever else. They actually did this thing in a very much a non-traditional film scoring studio. So, that was like a big point for Bryce Dessner as he was like, "I want this thing as far away from the Hans Zimmer remote control style score factory as you can imagine."
