On June 16, 1943, the crew of B-17E Old 666 demonstrated extraordinary courage during a photographic mapping mission over Bougainville, Solomon Islands, when Captain Jay Zeamer, shot in both arms and legs, and Bombardier Joseph Sarnoski, mortally wounded, refused to abandon their formation and continued fighting, ultimately destroying at least five enemy aircraft and earning the Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Crosses for their heroic actions.
