The V14.3.3 journey continues, Take 2

[00:00:00]Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my channel. Um we're going to do another version 14 drive. Uh this is actually my second drive. And as you saw in the first video, I did it completely in sloth mode, which is very slow.

[00:00:16]Um this time I'm going to drive completely in the next profile, speed profile up from that, which is going to be uh chill. Chill mode, which is the mode that I use the majority of the time. The next mode is standard, and then hurry. Um so, yeah. We will see how we go today.

[00:00:33]Um it's about a 15-minute drive to Bunnings. I've told the car to put us into the car park. So, hopefully this car park won't be closed.

[00:00:44]Uh I'm sure it won't be it being Bunnings. Uh and it'll be a big car park. Hopefully the lines are visible so that full self-driving can pick them up and hopefully park us in there. So, uh let's see [sighs] how we go.

[00:01:00]Cool.

[00:01:01]Easy. Yeah, so straight away, I think I mentioned it in the last video. Um it pulls out from the uh parked mode into the lanes or roads much quicker and much more confidently.

[00:01:15]Uh so, it's been a little bit jittery here cuz it can detect these guys up here on the right. Oh, as we're coming up on the left here, uh it's just these guys with cones and road works. So, I noticed when it sees uh that's one thing with full self-driving I've noticed before uh when it sees road work or any high-vis um material like those guys are wearing and the cones, it is super cautious and it's super careful. So, as we were turning right just there, um it obviously picked up those high reflective colors. And um yeah, that's that's why you saw it jittering cuz it never does that. Never Sorry.

[00:01:54]On on that corner, it'll never do that, you know? It's always just like pretty smooth.

[00:01:59]Um but yeah, sorry, this is not just like just to clarify, this isn't just my second drive with full self-driving version 14. I've done a maybe a few more before that, but this is just the second video that I'm putting out. So, I have had a bit of experience using it um going to the airport and back. So, those those those are pretty cool drives. They were like 15 50-plus minutes both ways, but um a lot of it I did going over the West Is that right? Correct? Westgate Bridge, I think. Yeah, so it's long long drives, but intervention-free. Zero interventions the whole way there and the whole way back. So, um I didn't really make videos of those ones, but um yeah, I'll just make sure yeah, I'm in chill mode. Sweet. And it And it does have park, so it's only being there.

[00:02:44]Okay, cool. Yeah, please keep your hands ready to steer. Yeah, yeah, cool. Um so, I've got it on chill mode here, as you can see, and I'm going to say park at a car park. Boom. Done. Okay, sweet. So, hopefully um yeah, it'll do what we want it to do.

[00:02:59]Pull up to Bunnings car park and yeah, pick a spot and park, hopefully.

[00:03:04]Um yeah, so what I was saying about those other drives, so good, especially going to the airport. Then it's like it's quite a long drive. Um and just to have full self-driving take you there the whole way and back without any interventions, without any worries or concerns is much It's It's very cool.

[00:03:20]Very chill. And also, I must say that version 14 on uh highway driving, it it is I wouldn't say erratic. I would say it's more um more human-like. It doesn't It and and and a little bit impatient, I think. When it sees cars, you know, if we're in the middle lane and there's just cars not doing the speed limit, which is like a lot of times. There's a lot of people just sitting in the right lanes or middle lanes just not doing the speed limit.

[00:03:49]It'll go in the left lane really like um confidently and assertively and overtake them um because yeah the thing is I guess with you know when you're driving your car normally and you've got your foot over the accelerator you're using the accelerator to you know accelerate whatever your speed is always fluctuating going up and down and unless you're using what is it or cruise control and setting the speed yeah it's just beeping because this guy sort of just jumped out in front of traffic but it is fine um yeah if you haven't got if you got this cruise control on and you set the speed limit to what the speed limit is so I'd say it's like a hundred kilometers an hour it this car will the so it will self driving will do a hundred kilometers an hour and people who are driving you can sort of see them that they could speed you know you will experience it before if you're driving your speed fluctuates up and down okay it's sixty but we're doing okay traffic lights so yeah so it's full self driving it's got really good I don't know like distance detection green cars so it automatically knows like hey we're doing a hundred this car is doing ninety-five up ahead so I noticed on the highways it would just like pull over to the to the left lane to overtake or pull over to the right lane to overtake which I really like you know um it's before in the previous version it definitely just took took its time and would you know for example if a truck's going on you know if you if you come up to a truck it it would slow down to like eighty-five eighty kilometers an hour even though the speed limit is a hundred and just stick behind that truck and not actually like take the not risk just take the more assertive choice and try to overtake either left or right so that's a really good improvement in this new version I must say like it's it's overall it's just so much better in so many ways okay it's telling me to it's so good in so many ways and um yeah I I I I I I didn't I'm just gobsmacked and very impressed because obviously this is not the final version.

[00:05:55]This is not the final product. It will just as any software update, it's going to continue getting better. It's going to continue being faster at making decisions. It's just going to be It's just going to get It's just going to improve over time and um what we're already seeing is super impressive. I mean, I'm I you know I say I've said it before, but we're just sitting here like Uh oh, I'm just sitting here right and you're watching me and this car is just driving itself to the destination. So, um yeah, even though it is supervised, you know, like I always say I'm keeping um watch. I'm paying attention. It's just really really really confident and really really good technology.

[00:06:33]>> [laughter] >> Um one other thing that uh So, yeah, we're turning left here. No problem. Lights are red. All good. So, the sign says new limit 60 km. What is Let's see. We're at 40 right now. Goes to 60. And then, yeah, it goes up to the speed limit.

[00:06:51]No problem. So, we're on chill.

[00:06:53]Acceleration is not that um crazy. It's like I said, like like like the profile suggests, it's chill. So, um with the normal Teslas, you have like um if those of you own Teslas would know what I'm talking about. There's not speed profiles for full self-driving, but like um profiles for acceleration and like this chill, normal, and then like really fast or something. I think there's three profiles. I can't correct me if I'm wrong. Um but I've I've usually just have it on slow, so the acceleration is just slow.

[00:07:26]It's still adequate. It's like a normal car. It just doesn't have that whoa push you in the back of the seat sort of acceleration. And this is not even the performance model Model Y. This is just the normal rear-wheel drive. And I found the acceleration um not very necessary. It was already really fine as it was. Um and obviously having it on the slower speed profile actually reduces battery usage. So, I read a real This is a many years ago, but I remember reading about like cars and uh correct me if I'm wrong again, but I I think like 70% of energy consumption, whether it's fuel or battery, is used during acceleration.

[00:08:06]So, I remember this these guys did like this world record challenge on the Stuart Highway, which is through the middle of Australia, and they were trying to get the most fuel efficiency out of a uh a internal combustion engine. And yeah, what they would do is just like accelerate very very slowly.

[00:08:26]>> [laughter] >> And and obviously, you know, when they're going up hills, try to accelerate the least amount as possible.

[00:08:31]It was all about just controlling acceleration. And um yeah, it does make sense if you speed up 90 80% 80 90% percent of the time, you're going to come to uh in urban driving, you're going to come to a traffic set of traffic lights, and then you just slow down, and all that energy is dissipated through the brakes, right?

[00:08:48]So, yeah, I I learned from it actually makes sense. Oh, here we go, see. Okay, cool. Just took the took went into this right lane for a reason, probably cuz we're turning right up ahead.

[00:08:59]Um I used to deliver pizza pizzas as a delivery driver, you know, when I was younger. So, I I always had that in the back of my head. I was like, "Look, if I can um reduce acceleration um by 50%, then I save money by not accelerating so fast, and you know, Oh, everyone's tripping out here because this guy missed the light, but um yeah, so um chill mode acceleration is really chill. And with fast mode, well, I've yet to see how I've I've only used hurry mode a couple of times, just like short um stints on trying to get the speed limit um up because that's one thing I wanted to talk about is um um the speed limits. So, for those of you who are running version 13.9, this right wheel when Tesla or when full self-driving was reading the speed zones incorrectly.

[00:09:56]So, for example, it was uh school zone and it was outside the school zone hours, it would do 40 instead of doing the correct speed, which is 60 or 70 km/h, whatever.

[00:10:08]Um, and so what I would have to constantly do and you would have probably would have seen me doing it in my previous videos a lot is like adjust the maximum speed to like 70 or 60 or whatever up from 40 so that full self-driving actually sped up.

[00:10:26]Um, so that's all changed now.

[00:10:28]So, now this right-hand wheel knob or whatever it is, um, it no longer adjust the speed.

[00:10:37]It actually just adjust the speed profiles. So, from what we're on now, chill, sloth, um, standard or hurry.

[00:10:47]And so that's hm, how would I say? A little bit annoying because though full self-driving version 14 has gotten the speed zone detections much, much better, I would say.

[00:11:00]Yeah, enormously improved on that department. It's still not 1,000% correct all the time. So, I've had to, um, you know, push the wheel up a little bit to put it into hurry mode. And hurry mode, from my understanding is it's a little bit faster than the speed limit. It'll go a little bit faster than the speed limit. And you can you can you can adjust that offset of how much you want it to go above the speed limit by uh whatever you want. 15, 10, 20 km/h Um, above the sign speed limit. So, I think that's their answer to the wrong uh incorrect signs being read, but uh we'll see.

[00:11:48]We'll see how it goes, you know. I don't think it's like a you know, it hasn't it's not perfect. Um it's not going to read every speed limit correctly. Um Actually, yeah, there are some situations when I'm in that when I'm in that exact same boat. I'm like, "Where What is the speed limit around this area?" And there's just no speed limit uh sign for a while. I've noticed that.

[00:12:08]It It's happened throughout my life where I've just been like, "I have no idea what the speed limit is here." Uh so, it's not much different from that, I guess. It's better just to be safe than sorry. I always, you know, I I don't know if this is the this is the law. I remember in Sydney it's the law, but it's 50 unless signed otherwise in a built-up area. So, I just go off that mantra. I'm not sure if you guys do it as well, but uh it's a pretty safe bet most of the time. Yeah.

[00:12:32]>> [snorts] >> Um Yeah, I I don't know if I don't know if you guys have noticed I think I talked about it in my last video, but um version 14 is much more confident in turning now as well. Turning and um I Yeah, like I said, overtaking as well.

[00:12:49]It's faster at turning and more confident at turning. And when I say faster, I'm not saying it goes around like speed limit faster. Just this wheel turns much faster. It's a very noticeable. Um before it would just sort of like not not this road, not this turn, for example. This is like a whatever or an arcing turn or whatever. It's not that crazy, but tight turns it would just go turn and back.

[00:13:14]>> [laughter] >> Sorry for the sound effects, but um whereas like previously, version 13 would be like and then back. Whereas this is just I I find it and haven't even seen it on hurry mode yet, you know, so uh yeah, it'd be interesting to see. One of you guys asked me if I would make a hurry mode video.

[00:13:36]Well, this is the chill video.

[00:13:40]I'm going to tell you there's a hurry video coming up. I'm going to have to pick somewhere where there is not so many cars, I guess, and not so many so much police presence.

[00:13:51]>> [laughter] >> No, I'll change the offset so I'm not like going too crazy above the speed limit, you know.

[00:13:57]Um but it would be interesting to see how it reacts, you know, because in real life there's going to be situations when you're late for an appointment or you're late for a date or you need to get to the hospital cuz your wife's giving birth.

[00:14:11]I don't know, whatever, right? And maybe you've just been using full self-driving for so long and you don't know how to use your arms and feet anymore and they're not coordinated so you choose um hurry to get you to the airport airport or hospital, you know, so there's all these situations. Ah, so we're coming up to Bunnings. That was actually a pretty quick drive which is good. I wanted to showcase you what chill looked like, what, you know.

[00:14:36]But um so this is the car park. This is the Bunnings.

[00:14:41]Let's see how it reacts. So like I said like I said I've got in the car park mode so it knows there's a car park coming up.

[00:14:48]I've had this exactly the same problem at this exact same Bunnings before where on version 13 where it just didn't park.

[00:14:56]So let's see what it does.

[00:15:00]Very cute. There's a lot of bays to for it to turn down. And it's we need to go sort of over there. So let's see. It's got a left hand turn coming up here so Oh no, no, it turned a little bit earlier.

[00:15:13]That's fine.

[00:15:15]All right, cool. Heaps of car parks. Um I'm so curious where it's going to park.

[00:15:22]Is it going to pull in or is it going to reverse? I think it's going to reverse park. I think it's going to reverse park.

[00:15:27]Oh, okay.

[00:15:28]We're turning right. Okay, it's going to Maybe it's going to go to the destination and then get it out of park.

[00:15:35]Possibly.

[00:15:37]Let's see what it does.

[00:15:40]Okay, so we've arrived at the destination. It knows that. Okay, so it's pulled to the right here, which is nice. It's exactly where we wanted to go because it's close. And let's go. Yep, cool. All right, so it's going to park as well. There's clear lines par clear lines visible, so um it should be able to do this pretty well. I mean, this this this self-driving parking is awesome. I talked about it all the time, but it's uh it really is good.

[00:16:07]Um it's not 100%, but yeah, it always corrects.

[00:16:11]I it the end result is 100%. It's very good.

[00:16:15]So.

[00:16:17]So, I don't know if you guys can see, but there's this ute that's tray over our line, so it's it's being very [music] careful. Um that's why our nose is pointing out a little bit because this ute is m- way over the white line, um which is normal common for utes. It's But it's But it's park car park. There's plenty of space.

[00:16:36]So, uh that's the end of the drive, guys. Um as you can see it completely smooth. It went really really really really well. Uh I don't have any complaints with that whatsoever. It was about 14 minutes. I'm not sure. I'll go back and check the video, but um yeah.

[00:16:54]It parked, which is exactly what I wanted to do. And really close to the entrance, too. So, like I'm pretty pleased with that uh result overall.
