[00:00:00]The generals were certain the battle was already won. For 7 days, British artillery had bombarded the German lines, 1 and 1/2 million shells. Surely nothing could have survived. The infantry would simply walk across. On July 1st, [music] 1916, at 7:30 a.m., the whistles blew.

[00:00:29]In deep concrete bunkers, the bombardment hadn't touched. They emerged, set up their machine guns, and waited. By the end of that single day, 60,000 British soldiers were [music] casualties, 19,000 dead in 1 day. It remains the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army. The Battle of the Somme continued for another 4 months.
