Added:Hey, how's it going? Welcome back to the channel. Today's puzzle, uh, I realized I hadn't done a puzzle by Jo in some time. So, uh, saw the name pop up, saw this puzzle, which looked quite interesting, and thought, hey, perfect fit, right? Uh, so what is this thing?
It's called Span by Jo. And there's really only two rules, arrows, and um, renb bands. So, but they look like they have a nice little grouping together here. So, we're going to give it a a a try here. So, normal sudoku, every row, column, and 3x3 box will contain the digits 1 through nine once each digits along an arrow must sum to the digit in that arrow's circle. So, whatever those three digits are, they will add to some value. That value is going to go right there. Purple lines contain a non-re repeating set of consecutive digits in any order. So, 1 2 3 4 5 could technically work if the arrow would allow it. Probably couldn't, but I wasn't paying attention to the arrow there. So, those are all the rules. Um, again, nothing crazy here, but it's just a nice little interaction between these two. And I think that we're going to have some curious things that we can go through and look to see how maybe some of this stuff is going to work out. So, with that said, let's get at it. Let's have some fun. All right. So, the question is going to be where the heck do we start? Now, we know that all of these three cell ones have to be at least six, seven, eights, and nines.

Uh, do we have anything about you? One, two, three.
Eh, you can just be anything from five and up at this stage. There's probably more we can do than that, but Oh, you are also a 6 7 8 9.
So, the question is going to be, which one do we want to start looking at first? I don't think we can really say too much about you at the moment.
Um, is it you? You seem like you're the central focus here. So maybe we do think about you [snorts] because let's actually think about what we can do. Let's say this was A5. What would that be? It would be a one and a one and a one two pair. That's the only way it works, right? 1 2 3 4 5. And I guess that does work.

Um, so that's not super helpful. [laughter] 98765.
So I guess you could be as high as a five.
5 6 7 8 9 that would work.
Now is there now obviously the the puzzle is called span. So there's going to be some relationship between the arrow and getting back to the renban.
So let's think about what that will be because when I was counting that I was say nine, right? 8 7 6 5. You would always be I think you always have to be 1 2 3 four digits away from this one, don't you? Yeah, that would make complete sense, wouldn't it? Cuz what are these? The minimum here is four. So let's say I put the nine 8 765. You would have to do a 1, two, and a one.
What happens if I put an eight here?
>> [snorts] >> 7 6 54.
Well, how do we make eight with a four?
Well, we need four more. So, and we can't bust that open, I don't think. Cuz let's say we tried to put the nine and put like a six here. Well, we're breaking because we go to 10 min. We try to do like the eight with the instead of the four, put the five again, we're breaking. So it's always I think looks like it's always going to be [snorts] four less than whatever this guy is and then these have to just be four.
[snorts] Is there any other way that can work?
Let's say let's just try to think about you in a second here. And can you be something anything higher than the one two pair? What happens if you're a one three and just put a one here for poops and giggles? Right. We're at five. So the most you could ever be would be a four. Four. 5 6 7 8. No, it doesn't work. Okay, so that is correct. So, we just have to be four away. So, if you're a nine, you have to be five. 8 is 4, 3, 2, and 1. And you guys just have to be a one two pair, and you just have to be a one, which is kind of curious how that works together there. Um, and again, these will just be whatever it takes to get from you to you. Now, [snorts] that one here is nice because it says you can't have a one on you. So, you'll be a 2 3 4 9 [snorts] and you won't be a nine. So, there will be a one on you. And it's not going to be those two. So, it's going to be you.
Okay. Now, is there some similar coordination like this to these guys? 9 8 765 4. It's the lowest we can ever get to. So, you will be the four. Uh, let's see. 6 5438 765765.
Yeah, you will always be the very low digit to whatever this is. [snorts] That's kind of similar to this and this.
Cuz if I put a six here, this is a 1 2 3. We can get down to a three. That's as far as we can go. If I put a seven, this is a 1 124. I can get down to a four.
That's as far as I can go. And then five, of course, with the eight. And then this will always be just a is it a two? Yeah, because the the six would be a 1 2 3. The seven would be a 1 2 4, [snorts] excuse me. And if we have a five with the eight, that's already six. It will just be two. So you are just a one two pair to [snorts] get that to work. And then these will just be the um the digits in between. So the eight and the five you would be uh six and seven. the seven to the four, you'd be five and six, etc., etc. Okay, excuse me. Now, what the heck does that do?
Uh, you can't be a nine.
So, there has to be a one on you. So, you can't be one. Now, if you can't be one, you can't be five because again, we have to be able to stay within the limits here. So, that's 1 2 3 4 five would be the most Do we [sighs] let's say we must have to think about what these can Oh no. Let's just put these in first. Uh we got four and a nine gap here. You have to be five, six, seven, and eights.
And does that tell me anything about these digits then? [snorts] It might remove some of these options, right? cuz these have to be from 2, three, four, and nine. You're obviously not nine.
And if you are 2, three, or four, you have to, we said these two have to be the inbetweens from you.
So, you're not going to be five and you're not going to be four. You have to be the three. If you're the three, you have to be the six. And this has to and you couldn't be a two anyway. So, you will be the four. You will be the five.
Okay, there we go. Uh, you're not fours.
You can't be two or three. So, you have to be nine. You're not nine. Two, three.
This is going very well. [laughter] It's a little bit scary. What are these two dudes? Seven and eight. Looks like if you are 78, that's a 9. 78. You have to be the six. Now, we know you will be that two cuz we had to keep those guys connected. And you will be three, four, and five. If I guess I'll put those in so I have them.
The two now says you can't be six or seven cuz we'd have to use the two. So you are the eight. You're not an eight.
And this has to be the 1 3 4. It's the only way the eight can work which means you will be a two and a three.
Okay. Um what are these digits? 7 8 and should do one 78 not eight seven you will be the Oh duh we could have just done Sedoku you're seven you're eight you're not seven so what are these now and we oh actually we can just do you first cuz right 8 76 54 well you could still be three or four I guess but what are you two five six and four And the 134 just says you are seven and one.
So let's put those in. I guess then we can say what these are. Maybe that's a better way to go instead of trying to figure out this first.
Five, six, and nine. You can't be a nine.
Can you be a six? The answer is yes, cuz this could be a one two to a nine. But because you're five or six, you can't be six or seven. So there's that.

Do we just keep thinking about you further?
Because we know there has to be a seven on you somewhere for get from the eight down to whatever you are. The six, the five, and the four could all be elsewhere.
One of these will be a seven. It's not going to be you.
And we also know that this has to get down.
Well, it doesn't have to get down because it could always put the nine here with the eight. But there will be something that gets us from the five to the six.
Okay, maybe we come down here for a second. Kind of jumping around a little bit. Oh, that's a one two pair says you can't be the one. So, we know where the one goes. Let's put that in.
None of those will be ones. So, one of these is Let's go back to here, though, cuz we're thinking now about you. Maybe we can use some more information up here uh to give us something else. Cuz you can't be obviously can't be one or two.
We can't be 3, four or five. So you're looking at 6 7 8 9 again.

And I think there's much more option here now. Or what there is more option on this than what we've got going on the rest of these. Now, we do know well well there is a there's a restriction here because of the 543 on the arrow. You can't be a six cuz we can't do 5 1 or 42.
You could be 7, eight or nine though. I think [snorts] yeah cuz seven we could do a 1 six 8 we could do a one. Is there always a one on it? Maybe. Let's do that. Seven could be six. Can't be 52 or 43. Eight could be 17. Uh, can't Oh, no. You could be a 62.
So, scrap that idea.
Okay, that didn't quite get us there.

Ones. There's probably no way you could have a one on you, right?
And I think if you're five or six, there's always a one on this arrow, isn't there? Yes, there is. So this is just a one because we can't put it there.
Good. So I guess again this just means this is a one two, doesn't it?
Cuz what happens if you're a f? Well, no, you could be a Well, you can't be a three. So you will be one two. I was going to say we could do the five with the one and a three to make nine, but we can't do that. If you're six, you have to be 129. If you're eight, you have to be 152 cuz again the three won't work with the nine. So you are just a two.
Okay, good, good, good, good, good, good, good, good, good. Let's keep moving. Now, does that one two create any problems anywhere?
We get a one two pair here as well. If I look down the line again, that could be helpful. No ones and twos, no ones and twos. So there's ones and twos in here somewhere.
Is it ever possible for you not to be a one or a two? I think the answer is no because what happens if you're not one or two? Well, the minimum is a 67 between these two. So, you will be one of the one twos.
And I guess well, do we want to really dig into what you are the option-wise?
Does that help us in any real way?
Cuz obviously you're seven, you could be well, we already kind of thought about it. If you're the seven, you are the six. If you're an eight, you're a seven or a six. If you're the nine, you could be an 81 72 and that's it. So, those are just those options. Okay, let's try [clears throat] to find something else. Let's or maybe we keep going with our Sudoku in some fashion.

We already kind of know the two is the threes. So, this is a 3 seven pair.

When I put the three seven pair in there, I thought about it. Then I got caught up on something else. 3 4 5 6.

That will work. Okay. Uh go back to our Sudoku then. H I don't think we had much more there, but I'm could be wrong. One of these is a three, which pushes a three up here.

M. [clears throat] Now, if that's the case, you can't be nine. You'll just be a six with a one or two to a seven or an eight. And you can't be eight. You're seven. There we go. Which means you have to be the one two one, not ones.

Okay, moving on. See, these are sixes and sevens, though. So, these can pretty much be whatever the heck they want.

That'll push our four, which pushes our three, which pushes our two. Then I think we should be able to finish the threes.

You won't be five or eight. So you will be that nine. You guys will not be the nines. You had to be the eight and the five. So, let's put them in. You guys are not fives.

And it's either a nine or a three. And it can't be a three. Okay. So, it's a 69 pair. You are sixes and nines.

Not too bad. Uh 217 solves in 26 days. I don't think it's been out for that long.
Has it? It might have just been one of those ones that was created uh sometime earlier uh and has been recently put up.

Oh, no. It was posted about a month ago.
Okay. So, it has been out there a little while. It was June something. So, [clears throat] for some reason, I thought this wasn't a was something that would get posted in the last couple of days, but apparently not. Okay. So, it's been out for a while. Not a ton of SS there, I guess, in terms of what we think of that, but very interesting rule. I'm I'm I'm kind of glad I started with you cuz I think this was really quite a big catalyst for getting things moving in the right direction.
I probably could have picked away at some of these other guys for a while before realizing that this and there might have been other ways to go about this as well, but I feel like this was really a key to think about how these were interacting together to get them to uh create a restriction there.
