DPD shows video of attack on officer before shooting

[00:00:00]The Dallas Police Department released new body cam video from an officer involved shooting. It happened over the weekend on Mockingbird Lane near Preston Road. So, in the video you can see the suspect approach the officer's car before eventually punching him in the face breaking several bones. Fox 4's Alex Boye walks us through the rest of the video and we do have a warning. Some of the images are graphic. The officer was sucker punched just moments after getting out of his patrol car and it turns out that the suspect had just been stopped by two other DPD officers minutes before that violent encounter unfolded. Now, this happened early Sunday morning just after 2:00 a.m. DPD Officer Aston Rosebud pulls over a black Jeep Cherokee for driving without lights on. As he calls the license plate into dispatch, a guy later identified as 27-year-old Jeremy Mayes gets out of the passenger side and walks over towards Officer Rosebud who's still sitting in his patrol car. Watch what happens next.

[00:01:32]This is unacceptable. This type of behavior from suspects or individuals being pulled over on traffic, this is unacceptable and really unbelievable how this incident occurred. Our officer was violently attacked, punched in the face, has three broken bones in his face along with a broken nose.

[00:01:57]The driver of the Jeep Cherokee drives off. Mayes, who was wearing a large ring when he punched Officer Rosebud, was shot in the stomach but survived.

[00:02:06]Investigators believe he was intoxicated at the time of the shooting. Now, at the news conference Chief Como said just 10 minutes before the officer involved shooting, two other DPD officers came across Mayes walking along the side of Central Expressway and stopped to see if he's okay. Here's part of that exchange.

[00:02:27]All right my man, you cannot walk on the side of the We just got to pass you down and take you off the highway. This is my lady right here, bro. Okay, hop in with her. That's fine.

[00:02:36]So, Mayes drives off in that same Jeep Cherokee. Chief Como said it was a coincidence that Officer Rosebud would pull the same Jeep over minutes later.

[00:02:46]Mayes is still at the hospital but will be charged with aggravated assault on a public servant once he is released. Now, Chief Como did say at that news conference that it was Mayes's girlfriend who was driving the Cherokee.

[00:02:58]She turned herself in to Frisco police after the incident and then told investigators that she drove off because she was fearful when she heard the gunshots and everything that was playing out. Because of that, DPD says that they will likely not face her with any charges. Uh meanwhile, Officer Rosebud is at home recovering from his injuries.
