Hello again, YouTube, and welcome back to Just Get a Tesla. And I am on a little bit of a series of errands today, driving along in my Tesla Model Y Juniper on full self-driving.
Now, you might, if you've seen other people's videos, look at two blue lines and say, "Ian, that isn't full self-driving. That's autopilot {slash} autosteer." And you'd be right, because in the UK, Tesla sell a product called full self-driving capability for the same price with the same subscription as full self-driving supervised. Or, if you're in a market such as the Netherlands and your vehicle is hardware three, Tesla will sell you full self-driving capability for 99 euros a month, as opposed to selling full self-driving supervised to a hardware four user for 99 euros a month. It's confusing. It's daft, but it is what it is. So, I am wafting along. I haven't bothered to increase the speed from the 60 that was set earlier, but I'll I'll flick it up to 55 uh now. On a single carriageway road like this, autosteer actually does a reasonable job. I wouldn't say it's necessarily the smoothest, but it definitely will take you round all of these bends and things without any major issues. The one problem that there is, perhaps, is that um it sometimes reacts to vehicles going past like that. It started backing off for no particular reason, but on a flowing, I would describe it as flowing, single carriageway road, it will work absolutely fine and dandy. Incidentally, all of the videos that I have seen of FSD supervised on single carriageway roads are also flowing. I haven't seen anyone going down what I would consider to be a classic British B road with full self-driving. Anyway, that remains to be seen in terms of how well that that works, but on this kind of setup, things are absolutely fine. So, what I'm going to do now is drop in a clip of me on dual carriageways and motorways using navigate on autosteer where it's supposed to be able to take you on and off slip roads as well as the automated lane change. And then we're going to come back and have a look at what it's like in towns. It has got a feature where it will recognize stop signals which normal autosteer does not or even enhanced autopilot does not. And then we're going to go into all of the parking fun. So, auto park and the various different kinds of summon. So, all of that's to come. First, dual carriageways.
Let's see if it can bring me off.
I'm almost certain that it can't and it just knocks me and it knocks the indicator off. That's the absurd thing about it.
You know, this whole automated interchange navigation thing, it's just pretty poor.
Now, it's picked me up into the right-hand lane which is actually correct for where I'm going, but I'm not sure if it's done that on purpose. I think that's just it wondered and it ended up picking one side or the other side.
And now we're going to see the system working on a dual carriageway. So, I'm turning here onto the A90 at Kintore heading northwards and I've already engaged autosteer just for a second at least because you saw the two blue lines, but it knocked itself off.
So, what we're going to do is we're going to join the dual carriageway, and then I'm going to demonstrate the automated lane change feature. So, I've engaged the system now, and on the right-hand side of the screen underneath the speed controls, you can see a little green symbol which is showing you that there are lanes available to change into. So, when I hit the indicator, the car checks the lane over to the left. If it is clear, then the line is shown as dashed blue. It shows a box in the lane that it's going to maneuver into, and it completes the maneuver. It does the steering entirely by itself. Now, this is an extremely useful feature if you have got a Model Y Juniper like I have, and Tesla have crippled autosteer.
Because on the old car, when you did a double pull on the right-hand stalk, which of course this doesn't have, it would engage traffic-aware cruise control and then stack autosteer on top of it. If you needed to break the steering lock to do a lane change, you maintained your speed with the cruise control, which remained on. With this car, that doesn't work. When you change lanes, it will break cruise control as well, and the car will regenerate and sometimes regenerate quite hard. You have to put your foot on the throttle and apply it before you do a lane change. You don't have to do that if you subscribe to full self-driving as I have done here. The car will do the lane change by itself when you use the indicator. And it is quite good. When you've got light traffic like this, especially, it's very good. Sometimes it can be a little bit hesitant. Sometimes it thinks about a lane change and then doesn't actually make it. I've had the occasional one where it gets halfway through and then it abandons it and it swerves you back into the lane, which is a touch disconcerting, but largely it's good when the traffic is light. My problem with the automated lane change feature is that when traffic is much heavier, it basically doesn't work because it needs such a long gap in the lane that you're going to move into that it simply won't go. So, I just touched the speed symbol there to accelerate to 70. I've hit the indicator. You can see the blue box and the dash yellow dash blue line, and across we go. But, it's doing that because there isn't any traffic there in lane two. If there was, even if the gap was sufficient for you to be able to indicate and then change lanes, it won't let you do it because it needs a huge amount of real estate.

I'm now driving through Aberdeen with my mum in the passenger seat, that's who you can see popping up here and there.
And I want to show you the traffic light and stop sign control which you get with full self-driving. So, the lights in front of me are on green. It will see the lights. It will show a line across the road to show whether it's going to proceed. This one is green and we keep going through.
Supposedly, you are supposed to have to dab the throttle to tell the car to go through. And here I am with the car weaving from side to side because two lanes emerge into one and it doesn't quite know where to go. But, the idea is that when you have lights like this on green, according to the rules, you're supposed to dab the throttle to make it go through.
What I have seen it do, instead of it going through there on green, is stop because the line is red even though the lights are green because you haven't dabbed the throttle.
Right, there's no one behind me. So, I'm going to show you what happens when you approach a green traffic light and don't do anything. There's no one behind me.
>> [laughter] >> I'm It's only now going cuz I'm applying throttle.
Right?
You tell me the value >> [laughter] >> of that. This is a feature that if you already had enhanced autopilot and you wanted to pay the same amount of money again to upgrade to full self-driving, the only additional feature that you got was this, the ability to stop and go at traffic lights or stop signs. Now, I will be honest, the previous system, the free system where it will go straight through a red is obviously dangerous, so you have to disengage it before you get there or hope cars in front are going to proceed or stop so that the car will read them. So, this functionality is useful, but it is consistently inconsistent with its application.
Sometimes the line is green when the lights are green. Sometimes the line is red when the lights are green and the car just stops. I found this to be the most baffling feature of the global release of full self-driving, yeah? That for double the money, the only thing that it adds is this random stop or go, you have to keep watching it feature. It really is quite perplexing.
So, what else can the system do? Well, it can do auto parking.
Okay, so we're going to tell it we're going to park here next to this van.
So, bring the vehicle to a stop.
Press start and it's going to do an offside parallel park.
Hopefully.
>> [laughter] >> I'd say I'm much closer to that van than I'd like to be normally.
I've left it bags of room. Okay.
So, it's gone into there, okay?
Kind of.
So, you get the idea. See somewhere that you think you want to park, put the indicators on and then it'll um Why is it nosing right up to this van?
Okay. All right, it's it's trying to get us in a little bit more.
It does faff a little bit, but it does get you in.
Okay?
Um so, as I say, when you're coming up to a spot that you think you want to go into, Just stick the indicator on onto the correct side and it'll look for a space and then off you go.
And we're also going now to go into the supermarket car park and see it going into a space.
Okay, so supermarket car park. We'll use one of these ones over here. Come on.
There we go. Let's pick up a spot. That one? No. That one will do.
Try and get it to be nicely out of people's way and I think we are here.
So, pick a spot and then press start and um it reverses itself back in. And you know what? It does a reasonable reasonable job of it. I think sometimes it's a little bit faffy or it's it's kind of overshot and it's having to correct itself quite a bit and a wee bit of a shunt forward, but if we Hang on.
If we stick the cameras on, you can see that it's it's reasonably reasonably in the lines. Okay. So, that's auto park and then I'm going to step out and we're going to have a look at the other things that we can do.
Okay, so we are going to have a play around with summon and actually smart summon. Well, actually dumb summon really. So, you want to go into the app on your phone, okay?
And then we are going to scroll down here and go to summon and then press summon and it locks itself onto the car and then you've got a couple of arrows. So, a forward arrow and a back arrow. So, if I press and hold the forward arrow Yeah.
The car rolls itself out of space.
And then I let go and it stops and then I hit the back arrow.
Woo.
And it backs itself in and it won't actually go any further than that. So, that can be a really useful feature when you're trying to get the car in and out of tight spaces. But then the really daft one is what they call officially actually smart summon, but in my testing it's actually quite dumb. The idea is that basically the car will come to you from wherever it is. Now, in North America where they don't have laws, you can actually get that so it will come quite a distance. In Europe, where we do have laws, it doesn't work that way. So, let's see what we can actually do. I'm going to come over here in towards the loading bay, all right?
So, the car's over there and we're going to go on to, again, we're going to go to summon, but this time we're going to go to come to me.
Press and hold.
And we'll see what happens.
It says stopping as the phone is no longer within 6 m. Yes, this is the problem. You have to be within 6 m of the car to make it work. So, let's stand We are We are not 6 m away.
We're less than 6 m away. We're going to press it anyway.
Okay. Come to me. Now, it should turn.
So, there's a bit of steering lock going on.
But you can see it's not really What?
Where's he Where's he gone?
>> [laughter] >> Why is he come to itself in the middle of the car park? That is not where I was putting it. Let's see if we can make it back up. Where's he Where's he going now?
>> [laughter] >> Ouch.
Where on earth is he now? I'm trying to make it go backwards. Yeah, come to me.
Okay, come to me.
What's it doing? It's not going Hang on. Sorry.
Right, I'm going to have to get in and drive it manually now before I annoy this person. So, >> [clears throat] >> right.
What it's just done there, I've said come to me while I'm behind it and it's gone forwards again. [laughter] So, ASS, actually smart summon, is about as dumb as it gets, okay? So, to be fair to Tesla for a second, cuz somebody needs to be, the 6-m restriction on ASS isn't Tesla's doing.
That is the regulations as laid down by the UNECE, which is the global regulator for car design systems, okay?
6 m. The problem is that in my testing, it's more like 6 ft because it obviously has to be interpreted by the company who make the software, and of course Tesla is American and they don't understand meters, so they've just taken six and applied it to feet, I think, because it doesn't actually go very far. But, auto park, very useful. It's not the fastest system in the world, but it can be really useful getting in and out of tight spaces, and then summon is very useful for shunting shunting of the car forwards or backwards, if as an example somebody has parked too close to you and you can't get in. I have made use of summon to get the car in and out of tight car parking spaces, as in extracting it so I can get the doors open. It's an extremely useful feature from that perspective. The other stuff that you have seen, so um being able to waft along with the car following the contours of the road, really useful. Automated lane changes, very useful. Especially where you've got a car like this, Model Y Juniper, and Tesla have broken Autopilot. Sorry, it's not called Autopilot anymore, Autosteer, but it used to be Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and then Autosteer stacked on top of it. And now that it's all just called Autosteer, it's not stacked, which means that when you change lanes with Autosteer enabled, it cuts the throttle and starts braking, which is really annoying. If you have um auto lane changes, which you get with full self-driving capability, then that is definitely better.
So, really, it's just a question of do you think 99 quid is actually worth your money? Or 99 euros if you're in Europe.
Or I think it's 99 of whatever your local currency is. If, like me, you've bought Enhanced Autopilot, it's 49 of your local currency.
Here is my problem, though, which is Tesla sell the same thing at the same price to different hardware versions, and it's a completely different product. So, this is full self-driving. This is full self-driving, but it's this full self-driving as opposed to that full self-driving. This is full self-driving capability, which is full self-driving for 99 a month, and that is full self-driving supervised for 99 a month, and it's full self-driving. And um they're not remotely comparable. So, it's daylight robbery, quite frankly, that Tesla sell full self-driving capability for the same price as full self-driving supervised. They probably think they can get away with it because, hey, it's the same name even though it's entirely different. So, I'm going to leave it there. Tell me in the comments what do you think. Would I spend my 99 a month if I had base auto steer, cuz it's not autopilot anymore, if I had base auto steer? Um would I pay 99 quid a month for it? Well, it actually adds quite a lot for 99 quid a month. I just think it's outrageous that Tesla charge that much for such an inferior product when the much better product is the same price.
