[00:01:34]>> There's no need for that.

[00:01:36]>> Sally, it's definite. Every year, the same party, the same time, the same guest.

[00:04:45]>> No, sir. You got a bit mixed up. It's been empty and shut up. Ever since I've been on this, my wife and maids are here. They'll tell you whose house it is.

[00:04:53]>> Mary, FOR GOD'S SAKE, WHERE ARE YOU?

[00:04:58]>> If it is your home, sir, then how come you break a window and climb in?

[00:05:02]>> We were having a Christmas party. I went down to the gate to see my guests off.

[00:05:06]There was a gust of wind. Front door slammed. I couldn't make anybody here, so I had to break a window.

[00:05:11]>> Did you cut yourself, sir?

[00:05:13]>> Yes. Here.

[00:05:14]>> Funny there's no blood.

[00:05:16]>> It's probably the cold.

[00:05:18]>> Well, if you just let me have your name, sir.

[00:05:20]>> Greenwood. John Greenwood of Hansen and Greenwood, Morgate Street. If you want my card, I'll go and get one for you.

[00:05:26]They're in my pocketbook upstairs.

[00:05:28]>> There's no pocketbook of yours upstairs in this house, sir.

[00:05:31]>> Now, look here, coun. The reason being there ain't no stairs. They were blown to bits years ago.

[00:05:47]>> This way, Sergeant. He says he won't accompany me to the station and he refuses to move from this house until he's seen you.

[00:05:53]>> Why me?

[00:05:54]>> He says he's an old friend of yours.

[00:06:02]Sergeant Phillips, I'm sorry to give you all this trouble. Do >> you mind if I shine this torch on your face, sir?

[00:06:10]>> It's me, Greenwood. I don't know what on earth.

[00:06:14]>> Sergeant, it's your old friend, John Greenwood.

[00:06:19]>> Sergeant, >> no.

[00:06:25]Never again.

[00:06:28]Never the strange unsinking joy, never the pain.

[00:06:33]>> Christmas Eve 7 years ago, I was at the corner of the ice street when I heard the sirens.

[00:06:40]The flying bombs were nearly over by that winter, but this one was definitely heading our way. I watched it go right over here. Then I heard the motor stop.

[00:06:50]I was the first to get here before the air raid warden. Right through the roof it came in the middle of that Christmas party of theirs. A whole lot stoned dead from the blast.

[00:07:00]>> Sergeant, >> they say it was the last flying bomb of the war.

[00:07:05]>> Yes.

[00:07:06]Well, Sergeant Phillips, we can only assume that in some extraordinary way, Mr. Greenwood escaped.

[00:07:13]>> But he didn't, Mr. Gurnie. I know he didn't. I got him out with my own hand.

[00:07:17]>> It was dark. You must have been mistaken.

[00:07:19]>> They buried him in Atworth Cemetery along with his wife. And there he was just now with that same smile on his face and same white flower in his coat just as he was when we wrapped him up and carried him away seven years ago.

[00:07:31]>> You must apply your common sense and reason, Sergeant. Mr. Greenwood was a wealthy man. This fellow may well be an impostor trying to impersonate him and claim the estate.

[00:07:41]>> He didn't look like an imposter to me, sir.

[00:07:43]>> Imposters never do, Constable. If Mr. Greenwood is buried in Hackwood Cemetery, then it stands to reason that it's not him in the other room.

[00:07:53]Oh, doctor, have you had a good look at him? He's not drunk. Well, what is it?

[00:07:58]He would seem to be a healthy man in early middle age. He responds intelligently to questions. His movements and reactions are perfectly normal. But there's no circulation and no heartbeat. The temperature I do not know. There was no response to my thermometer. It's impossible. There is a slight odor of rum. What do you suggest?

[00:08:17]I have nothing to suggest. I refuse to take the case. I consider it to be a matter for the home office. You put me in a very difficult position, doctor.

[00:08:24]What am I going to do?

[00:08:26]>> Well, the doctor seems to think I'm all right.

[00:08:31]>> Well, what's wrong now?

[00:08:34]>> I didn't properly introduce myself when I arrived. I am Mr. Stapleton Gurnie, a coroner for this district.

[00:08:42]>> Oh, has there been an accident?

[00:08:44]>> It's not my wife.

[00:08:45]>> No, no, no. It's not that.

[00:08:48]You probably know that my duties are somewhat varied. It's not always a matter of inquest upon persons recently deceased. I am sometimes called upon in certain other eventualities when treasure is discovered or when bones are disinter.

[00:09:07]>> What's all this got to do with me?

[00:09:10]>> Mr. Greenwood, we have clear evidence that you have been dead for seven years.

[00:09:19]What, Sergeant?

[00:09:22]>> It It was a doodle bugger. A flying bomb, Mr. Greenwood. Destroyed most of your house, and everyone at your Christmas party was killed.

[00:09:32]>> Right.

[00:09:34]Well, I don't know whose idea this is. I can take a joke as well as any man. But there are limits, and the joke's misfired.

[00:09:39]>> It is not a joke, Mr. Green.

[00:09:41]>> Why don't you tell me I'm a ghost and be done with it? The doctors examined me, and he says I'm all right. I have placed your finger where normally you would feel your pulse.

[00:09:51]Good heaven.

[00:09:53]>> Uhhuh.

[00:09:54]But I was here with my friends, my wife in this room half an hour ago.

[00:10:01]>> Yes. Um, well, there have been rumors about this house. Lights, music, laughter.

[00:10:12]I can only suggest that on every Christmas Eve on the anniversary of that tragic party of yours, the events are in some way repeated in the form of a u ghostly sherade. Well, if I aren't the others, >> yes, well, apparently they have returned to well, as they did in other years at midnight.

[00:10:37]You in some way have been left behind.

[00:10:41]I can think of no other explanation.

[00:10:45]I I I imagine you do intend to disappear.

[00:10:49]>> I don't know. I've never tried.

[00:10:52]>> You've been doing it for 7 years.

[00:10:53]>> If I knew the way.

[00:10:54]>> Would it help if I put the candles out, sir?

[00:10:56]>> Leave the candles alone. Constable.

[00:10:58]>> Perhaps you could try some long deep breaths. Mr. Greenwood, >> I'm not sure that I want to disappear.

[00:11:04]>> But my dear sir, you must.

[00:11:06]>> Must. What colossal cheek, sir, to walk into a man's house without invitation and calmly tell HIM TO DISAPPEAR.

[00:11:12]>> BUT YOU'RE NOT ALIVE, AND THIS IS NOT YOUR HOUSE.

[00:11:14]>> IT IS my house.

[00:11:16]>> It was your house on a long lease. It is legally impossible for a deceased person to own property. After your death, no relatives were traced.

[00:11:23]>> I had no relatives beyond my wife.

[00:11:24]>> Exactly. On that account, your personal property passed into the hands of the crowd, and the lease of this house automatically reverted to the freeholders.

[00:11:30]>> Then they'll have to return it to me.

[00:11:32]>> But my dear sir, you are merely a manifestation. Huh? CALL ME WHAT YOU LIKE, BUT the point is that I'm here and that I don't look like a ghost and I don't feel like one. What's happened to my furniture, by the way?

[00:11:44]>> What was salvaged was put into store, Mr. Greenwood, pending a final settlement.

[00:11:48]>> You might have it sent round, would you?

[00:11:49]>> Impossible.

[00:11:50]>> The morning will do. The clothes, slippers, wireless books, curtains, sir.

[00:11:55]>> Good idea, Constable.

[00:11:56]>> I shall have to discuss it with the town cler in the morning. In the meantime, if you settle down quietly, you may disappear in your sleep, and the whole thing will settle itself without any more fuss and trouble. Doctor Sergeant, you all understand. Not a word of this to anybody. If a thing like this became public, what's all the fuss about? All you need to do is say there was a mistake. I wasn't killed after all. And here I am back again.

[00:12:23]>> Oh, out of the question.

[00:12:24]>> Why? The town council.

[00:12:26]>> What have they got to do with it?

[00:12:28]>> It's very complicated. I can only tell you that the council would never accept your suggestion.

[00:12:33]>> Why not? Because my dear sir, YOU ARE BURIED IN HACKWOOD CEMETERY, >> just off the Watford bypass.

[00:12:38]>> If you insisted upon posing as the real Mr. Greenwood, then the authorities would no doubt apply to me as coroner for an exumation order. They would confront you with your own body and you wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

[00:12:49]Constable.

[00:12:52]>> A room with a view and you and no one to worry of. No one to hurry up.

[00:13:04]>> Ah, morning Mr. Gurnie.

[00:13:06]>> Well, Sergeant, is he gone?

[00:13:07]>> No, sir.

[00:13:08]>> What's he doing?

[00:13:09]>> Putting up curtains with Constable Thompson.

[00:13:12]>> Curtains?

[00:13:13]>> Oh, and he wants to know whether he can join Boots Lending Library.

[00:13:16]>> Certainly not. Max station.

[00:13:22]>> Sergeant, would you tell the removal that they can return to the depository?

[00:13:26]>> There's quite a bit more furniture in the van, sir.

[00:13:28]>> There's ample here for the short time Mr. Greenwood will be staying with us.

[00:13:33]Right, sir. And Sergeant, tell Constable Thompson to leave the curtains. I want a word with our Mr. Greenwood alone.

[00:13:45]I sat up with the town cler until 5:00 this morning reading the encyclopedia's section on ghosts.

[00:13:51]>> Well, that's interesting.

[00:13:52]>> In every case, without exception, the apparition disappears within a short time, usually after midnight.

[00:13:57]>> Could you just the chair? I think it looks best beside the fireplace. The merry always greenwood.

[00:14:05]>> Yes.

[00:14:05]>> The town Clark and I found no known case of a ghost actually staying the night.

[00:14:10]>> Do sit down, Mr. Gurnie. What? Oh. Oh, thank you.

[00:14:15]>> Now, I understand there's a very good spiritualist, >> Mr. Greenwood.

[00:14:21]>> Just a moment.

[00:14:23]That's better. Bought them as a pair.

[00:14:26]You see, there's a very good spiritualist medium in the town. I'm sure she'd be able to help you to return to the place you came from. If we send her round, uh, will you accept her help?

[00:14:40]>> Certainly not. I don't believe in spiritualism.

[00:14:43]>> My dear fellow, >> are you so desperately anxious to get rid of me? The local council has brought this property for a new block of flats.

[00:14:51]They want to pull it down early in the new year. If you can't disappear or or won't disapprove their own legal claim by going to Hackwood Cemetery and digging you up, and everybody would know you for what you really are.

[00:15:11]Now, surely the small inconvenience of moving >> moving >> a house in exchange.

[00:15:18]>> And you would agree to some story that I wasn't killed? Oh, I think the town cler and I have found the perfect place. Lord Cranmer's old castle in Cranmer Park.

[00:15:26]It's very suitable. There's a moat, a drawbridge, and if I wasn't killed, I could claim all my money. Remarkable views from the top. Tell me Gurnie, how long would it take to get Clan McCastle ready?

[00:15:41]>> Oh, about a week. In the meantime, we're taking precautions to allay curiosity in the neighborhood by saying that this house is temporarily let to a Mr. Davis of Tasmania, a distant relative of the previous owner.

[00:15:55]>> When I get my money back, I have a complete new wardrobe and modern furniture for the new house. So, I'll be round tomorrow with the draft agreement.

[00:16:04]And I hope I shall have some good news about the FITTING UP OF THE CASTLE.

[00:16:07]>> I'll be starting life again here forever and ever. And I shan get any older. Mr. Greenwood, Mr. Gier. Oh, goodbye. And give my regards to the town cler.

[00:18:35]Well, I've always been thrilled by that sort of thing.

[00:18:38]>> Well, didn't you feel frightened? Coming to an empty house alone with a ghost in it.

[00:18:42]>> But I knew there was a policeman here.

[00:18:44]Now you're here, too. There's nothing to be frightened of. Supposing I hadn't been here and you'd sat here all alone in the dark and suddenly the ghost had appeared. What would you have done then?

[00:18:53]>> Probably shrieked my head off and jumped out of the window.

[00:18:57]>> What you going to do now when you see it?

[00:18:59]>> I suppose I'll do whatever you do.

[00:19:01]You're an expert, are you? Psychic investigator.

[00:19:03]>> No, I'm as much in the dark as you are.

[00:19:06]>> Why did they let you come then?

[00:19:07]>> They didn't. I came on my own.

[00:20:19]>> I suppose we usually only notice the quill looking ones without heads.

[00:20:23]>> Or perhaps somebody on the other side has discovered a way of getting spirits back to Earth and and you're the trial kite, the guinea pig.

[00:20:31]>> Well, if that were true, surely they'd experiment with experts. They wouldn't begin by sending a stock broker who doesn't know a thing about it.

[00:20:38]>> No, I don't suppose they would.

[00:20:40]Perhaps you've come back like all the others do.

[00:20:43]>> What do you mean?

[00:20:45]>> Personal reasons.

[00:20:47]Spirits return to Earth because they're unhappy about something.

[00:20:56]>> Worried about something you failed to do when you were on Earth?

[00:20:58]>> I never failed in anything. I began as an office boy and finished up senior partner.

[00:21:03]>> Well, perhaps you've been unkind to somebody and you've been sent back to redeem yourself, put things right.

[00:21:09]Everything was right. I paid my people well and they got their Christmas bonus.

[00:21:14]>> In that case, you must have just come back by accident.

[00:21:17]>> Accident?

[00:21:18]>> I imagine you'll be wanting to get back as soon as possible.

[00:21:20]>> Why should I?

[00:21:21]>> Well, it must be very lonely. I mean, last night you were all together, your friends and your wife. Must have been a shock for them when they suddenly found you weren't with them any longer.

[00:21:32]>> I don't think they're going to miss me.

[00:21:33]>> Really? I imagine when a flying bomb makes a direct hit on a husband and wife, it automatically dissolves the bonds of marriage. And as for those other people, they were her friends. I always let her ask her own that night.

[00:21:44]They bored me to distraction. But I put up with them for her sake. Of course, if they've been my friends, then I'd feel it my duty to do something about it. But I'm certain she's perfectly happy without me. Cigarette.

[00:21:58]>> In fact, I think the whole thing's a very good arrangement.

[00:22:26]>> I don't know much about these things, but Well, look at the carnation in your button hole. I can smell the scent of it. It It's as fresh as when you put it there for that Christmas Eve party seven years ago. It's part of what you are, if you see what I mean.

[00:22:42]>> Are you suggesting I've got to go on wearing this dinner jacket and this carnation day in and day out?

[00:22:49]>> I've never heard of a ghost that changed its clothes. Have you? I mean, you're lucky to be dressed as you are. Some ghosts have to go about with great rusty chains around their ankles or or swords right through them. What do you suppose would happen if I took them off?

[00:23:02]>> I don't know. It's only my personal opinion, but I think you only exist as a ghost in a dinner jacket with a white carnation in the button.

[00:23:10]>> Well, if you want my personal opinion, I think you're talking a lot of sheer rubbish.

[00:23:13]>> Well, all right, then. Go ahead and do whatever you think. Put on gray flannels and a sports jacket and see what happens.

[00:23:19]>> I thought you didn't smoke.

[00:23:38]>> I just thought you'd like me to tell you of the things to be careful about. I I mean, supposing you offered to see me home, and I didn't warn you of what might happen. Well, we walk down the steps of this house, and you go out like a candle.

[00:23:50]>> Surely you know that. Every ghost has its own haunted, narrow walk, ruined castle. Well, just a few yards. And when they move away, but they disappear.

[00:24:02]>> Not a prisoner. You can come and go.

And she always chose the exact moment when I was on the point of bringing off some deal I've been leading up to with an important guest. Everything I said was wasted, and the guest would have to talk about squirrels for the rest of the evening.

[00:35:42]We always think of this other world as something remotely up in the sky somewhere, but it may not be up there at all. It may be all around us, separated from us by well, some kind of blindness in our understanding. Just as sounds in wireless waves are silent until we turn the knob on a machine, the other world may move in some kind of wave like that very close to us. Then something happens, some tiny upset that disturbs the delicate order of it all. Or something may have given you a slight swerve that night, the vibration from the Christmas bells, the shock of a slamming door. A similar occurrence at the right moment will probably take you back.
