Les Halles, historically known as the 'Belly of Paris,' was a massive food market that operated from the Middle Ages until 1969, serving as the central food distribution hub for the city. The market's demolition, largely due to rat infestations, marked the end of an era that had fundamentally shaped Parisian dining culture. This historic market laid the groundwork for modern restaurant culture by establishing the concept of centralized food markets that supplied diverse culinary offerings to the urban population, ultimately transforming how people ate in Paris and influencing restaurant practices worldwide.

Before Restaurants, There Was Les Halles追加:
So, we're in the heart of Les Halles, which is historically the belly of Paris. Literally, this is where there was an enormous market that sort of began to be built starting in the Middle Ages and lasted here until 1969.
Um and so, this area has always been known as a foodie center of Paris. These days, Les Halles have been demolished.
They were knocked down beginning in 1969 in large part due to the great number of rats they attracted. And now, here at Les Halles, we have instead a giant shopping mall um where you still can get some pretty good food, like chocolate from Alain Ducasse or donuts from Krispy Kreme. And uh a great number of metro lines converge, which makes uh Châtelet-Les Halles pretty much the most infuriating metro stop to visit in Paris. I avoid it like the plague, and I recommend that you do, too.
