Extraordinary Performance Art! Siblings React to Amaia | Tiny Desk ConcertAdded:
Hello YouTube.
>> Welcome back or welcome for the very first time to La Vida Loca Reactions.
I'm Karen La Vida.
>> And I am Nick La Vida.
>> We're siblings who get together whenever we can and we like to show each other our favorite music and every once in a while we do a double blind and today is one of those days as we check out the Amaya Tiny Desk. Yes. So, I came across this um uh through Instagram where I saw just this really tiny clip of her playing the chair as a flute and I was like, "Nick, Nick, we got to we got to do it."
>> of gave away the best part of it.
>> Right. Well, I mean, that it's on the thumbnail, so whatever. Like, yeah.
Um so, uh we've just have been really enjoying our international music uh and of course we're big Tiny Desk aficionados to the point where we're now going to have a Tiny Desk >> Yeah. There's a couple others we'd like to cover as well. We will cover.
>> And we will. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
>> keep pumping out the good stuff, so >> Exactly. Exactly.
>> out of Spain, by the way. Is it Okay.
>> said Spanish, so yeah, we'll presume. Yeah, yeah. So, uh yeah, as always with our channel, we do zero research. We just >> [snorts] >> throw ourselves in and hope for the best and that's what we're doing with this as well.
>> Zero research is the description in the Tiny Desk video.
>> Right, exactly. Exactly. And then the commenters, you got to tell us who they who they are, what they're about. Um so, yeah. Now, we're I'm excited about this.
Like, again, I I I've only heard like tiny clips and I'm like, "Mhm. Mhm. I think this is this is going to be our our thing." So.
>> Cool. Um really quick housekeeping before we get into this. Like, comment, share, subscribe. Uh hype if you can find it. Uh and then we have a buy me a coffee and that is like a tip jar. Uh we can't take requests, but if you want to go the extra mile as a thank you to us, uh we have that available to you.
Coming soon, we're going to do a Patreon and we would love any kind of feedback on what you think would be good for a Patreon. Right now, we're stuck at put our videos on there. Yeah, which That's as far as we've gotten.
>> Right, yeah.
>> [laughter] >> Not very far, obviously. Right, right.
So, any any input would be greatly appreciated. So, cool. Let's switch the scene.
Let's get into this.

>> [music] [singing and music] [music] [music and singing] [music] [music] [singing and music] [singing] [singing] [applause] >> Yeah.
Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. That's the >> intro. Yes, it is. It's a great uh to to start that. Yeah. Uh I mean, okay, it's starting with the musicality. That, of course, phenomenal phenomenal piano phenomenal um everything. Yeah. Uh the harmony's fantastic. Uh and then just like the cheeky lyrics, you know, we're we're sucker for cheeky lyrics on this channel. Uh having a drink while you watch the world burn and it's like absolutely the vibe. [laughter] Well, and I think what's interesting is you had minor parts, which were the darker parts, and you had the major parts, which were the happier. And it's like the darker parts were like her the expectations of her in a way, right? And then when it then it when it kind of went to major and it was like, "Ah, you know, this resolution you know, the tension part, obviously, and then when it just kind of resolves, she's like, "Yeah, so what?"
>> So what?
>> Yeah. I get to decide.
>> Yeah, I decide. Yeah, this is my life.
So >> Exactly.
>> the drama. This is who I am. Weird.
That's great, you know.
>> all texture, and I get to decide. Yeah, absolutely. Oh, I'm I knew it. I knew this was going to be so good.
>> So, yeah, it's a great way of this is who I am, right? This is, you know. What an introduction. Cool. All right, shall we continue?
>> [applause] >> Yes, the chair.
I thought she used to open it.
>> [laughter] [music] >> Chairs.
>> [singing] [singing] [music] [music] >> Ah.
>> [singing] >> Ah.
>> [music] [music] [singing] [music] >> Ah.
>> [singing] >> Ah.
Ah.
Ah.
>> [singing] >> Ah.
Ah.
Ah.
>> [music] >> Ooh.
Ooh.
>> [music] >> Na na na.
Na na na.
Na na na.
>> [singing] >> Na na na.
>> [music] >> Ah.
>> [singing] >> Ooh.
>> [music] [singing] [music] [singing and music] >> Pa pa pa ra ra ra pa ra ra [singing] pa ra pa pa.
Pa pa [music] pa ra ra ra pa ra ra pa ra pa pa. [singing] Pa pa pa ra ra ra pa ra ra pa ra pa pa.
Pa pa pa ra ra ra >> [singing] >> pa ra ra pa ra pa pa.
>> [music] >> La ra ra si la ta ra ra no la ta ra ra niΓ±a ah.
>> [singing] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Nice.
>> [cheering and applause] >> Thank you very Oh, man.
>> It's a Spanish samba. Yeah. Oh, see, this is why we keep you around.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, it was like a It was a samba, but it was like [clears throat] that with the Spanish kind of the um harmony. Okay. Yeah.
>> so very clever and what a you know, and on top of that um noticing like this great blend of acoustic and electric instruments.
>> Uh-huh. Look at that and it's just like I mean, they work, you know, working together in >> no pun intended, but perfect harmony.
>> Yeah. Pun very intended.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, so it's interesting because like uh going through like I'm trying to pay attention to lyrics while also just jamming out to the like amazing amazing groove that they're creating.
So, this is also an existential piece.
Yeah.
Um [snorts] and so we I don't know uh the how we're going to release these videos, but we recently watched Miloj as Milo Zooka Milo Zooka's um uh Tiny Desk which is phenomenal. Beautiful piece of art and but it was like the dark darker side of existential dread.
>> Mhm.
Um, and like this is similar theme, but it is much more hopeful than Miloj as and like I think that's so interesting. It's like the difference between I mean obviously individuals period, but also male female perspective.
>> Right. Uh taking the same subject matter and like for her it is much more playful and less like dread serious.
>> Right. You know, even though with Miloj as like it was playful in that they had the the performance >> Catalina, yeah.
>> the Catalina performer performers behind it, but her tone like if we're going to go back to tonal painting >> Yeah. her tone is much much more playful of like we can see the the complexity of things and still hold it lightly. Yeah.
And so I really like that. This is fun.
And just like that the jam itself. Like I could absolutely just groove to this.
>> Oh yeah. I'm really really digging it.
>> you Right. Right.
>> not with a samba, you know. 100% 100% yeah. No, I I'm we're we're like really striking gold on good artists that we're coming across.
>> international too.
>> The international yeah, yeah. We're definitely like becoming more and more of an international music channel which I love.
>> That's why I like Tiny Desk so much cuz they introduce these artists, you know, that I've never heard of, you know, [snorts] and when you watch them, you know, and not just internationally, but you know, within the states as well.
There's a lot of independent acts that are just they're phenomenal. Yeah, yeah.
>> And so, yeah, that's what you know, I'm definitely definitely you know, support Tiny Desk, support NPR and all that just for that alone, you know.
>> Exactly. Exactly. This is or that changes the zeitgeist for sure.
>> Oh, yeah, for sure. All right.
>> Something just 20 minutes out of your day you could just enjoy yourself, you know.
>> Exactly. Exactly. All right, let's keep going.
>> [applause] [applause] >> Thank you very much. I am Amaia. I'm from Pamplona from Spain.
And it's a pleasure to be here. Thank you NPR and thank you Tiny Desk. Sorry, I'm I'm a bit nervous but and and my English is regular.
But I'm going to try.
>> [laughter] [applause and cheering] >> Thank you.
The next song it's a a mashup from between, sorry.
It's a mashup between Zorongo Gitano by Lorca and Rumores de la Caleta by AlbΓ©niz. I hope you like it. Thank you.
>> [applause] [cheering] [singing] [singing and music] [singing and music] >> Yes.
Stop laughing.
>> [singing] [music] >> La >> [singing and music] >> Luna is so La >> [singing and music] >> Flores No Vale >> [music] >> Lo Que >> [singing] >> Vale Son Tus brazos.
Cuando >> [singing] >> De Noche Me Abrazan.
>> [music] >> De Noche Me salgo Y Me Harto De llorar.
De ver >> [singing] >> Te >> [music] >> Quiero Tanto Y tu Me Quieres Nada.
La Luna Es un Pozo [music] Chico [singing] Las Flores No Vale Nada.
Lo Que Vale Son Tus Brazos.
>> [singing] >> Cuando De >> [music and singing] >> Noche Me Abrazan.
>> [music] >> 24 Horas Del Dia 24 Horas Que Tiene Si tu Quiera 27 >> [music] >> Tres Horas Mas Te Queria.
La Luna Es Un Pozo Chico. [music] >> [singing] [music] [singing] [singing and music] >> Wow.
>> [applause] >> All right. Pause.
>> Real quick. Yeah. I was going to say, all right, piano guy, this is your world.
>> that she did Albeniz, like I am I love Isaac Albeniz. Um in fact, uh like this probably could be my lifetime project.
I'm working on Azulejos. It'll kind of um it's a piece that he uh isn't unfinished. He died before he finished the piece, but and he had um I think uh I need it might be Enrique Granados, I think, finished it, but it's beautiful beautiful piano piece, but >> one that's like 9 minutes long? That's >> 9 minutes long. Yeah, but oh my gosh, it's just what a 9 minutes it is, you know? It's just amazing. Um probably my personal favorite piano piece, you know, of all the I don't know all, you know, >> Right. in the classical, you know, canon out there, but I mean, gosh, yeah, I love love that piece. I love Albeniz. I love, you know, it's yeah. I mean, so yeah, so it's cool that she played of course he's, you know, he's Spanish.
He's in in Spain, so you know, but yeah, it's such a very cool um mashup that she did. I love I love like the Spanish classical sound of like staccato and and sweetness, like and the same with like flamenco and all of that where like it's the that that There goes the break. I know, right? We tried with this thing.
Uh where like you have like the masculine feminine that's staccato hardness that then belies this like deep femininity that is just stunning. It's stunning. I'm obsessed with it and I'm going to fight with this now. Go ahead.
>> [laughter] >> I don't know what to add to that. I think I think you lost that battle.
>> Yeah, yeah. I know.
>> that battle right there.
But >> No, I mean, just yeah, and it's funny um cuz I'm a piano teacher, too, and the students I have now, granted these pieces were not written by Spanish composer, but you know, in these lesson books, some of the lesson books they do have like Spanish songs in some of them.
Usually those are my students' favorite and I I kind of play them up, too. It's like, "Oh, these are the most epic songs ever, every single one." And they are.
Yeah. For that very reason. It's just like they just pull that emotion out of you.
>> Yeah, they really do. They really do.
Yeah.
>> It's just so much fun.
>> [laughter] >> I am loving every second of this. Cool.
>> Yes, she's a fantastic piano player.
Fantastic, so >> Right? I could tell she's nervous, so I'm with her. I'm with her on that cuz I could tell at the end like that her finger, you know, as she was finishing up her She When she she pulled it through, she did fantastic job, so yeah. Beautiful, beautiful.
>> [applause] [music] [singing] [music] [singing and music] >> I told the man that to miss out of the sword When the I don't know what I do that You don't know >> [singing] >> I don't [music] know what I do that I don't know what I do that I don't know what I >> [singing] >> I don't [music] know what I do that I don't know what I I don't know what >> [singing] >> I don't know what I don't [music] know what I don't know >> [singing] [music] >> I don't know what >> [music] >> I don't know what I don't know I don't know what I [music] don't know what I don't know what I do >> [music] [music] >> Hey I don't know what I do that I don't know what I do that I don't know what >> [music] >> I don't know what I don't [singing] know I don't know what I don't know what I do that >> [music] >> I don't know what I don't know what I don't know >> [singing and music] >> I don't know what I do that >> [music] [singing] >> I don't know >> [music] >> I don't know what I do that I don't know what I do that >> [singing] [music] [singing] [music] [singing] [singing] [singing and music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [singing and music] [music] [music] [music] >> Woo!
Wow.
>> [applause and cheering] >> Thank you. WOO!
>> [cheering] >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THIS IS THE LAST SONG.
Let's pause.
>> Yeah, yeah. First stop. Just really That was so beautiful. Like the words that kept coming through my mind and it kind of is like a co-performer's like textured whimsy. Yeah.
>> Like like yeah, she does it's theatrical, it's it's whimsical, but still grounded, it's still like all those things. Like yeah. Well, it's just beautiful. The like said textures that you know, again how do you start a song and then how you develop it, right? And especially sonically, right? And so just you know, start It was great great transition by the way. Yeah. You know, um from the one song to the next and yeah, I don't know. It's yeah.
Beautiful.
>> second one just you know, and that second one is definitely the most pop song that you know, out of so far. But still at the same time like so incredibly artistic, you know, with it. So yeah, and just how the textures and the layers added and then you know, and then when she added her voice kind of floated, you know, floating on top of all that being kind of >> dancing in and out almost of those textures there. So >> Exactly. Just like this beautiful whimsy. So >> Yeah.
Cool. All right, let's keep going.
>> [laughter] >> I have said later. Sorry about I about my English because when I'm nervous is more is is Como se dice? worse >> [laughter] [clears throat] >> But this is the last song. Thank you NPR.
Thank you Tiny Desk. Thank you, all of you. You are beautiful. You are You have been a really, really good public.
>> [laughter] >> THANK YOU.

>> Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> She's such a theater nerd. Oh, yeah.
Only theater nerds would act like that.
>> [laughter] >> That was beautiful. That was just amazing.
>> both theater nerds, so we can speak to it.
>> Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> I mean, I don't know. It's just kind of words kind of leave me doing this, you know?
It's just other than obviously you know, very, in the best way possible, Spanish.
>> Yeah. Very best, you know, and just incredibly creative. And just every song is so different, you know? And but so much fun. There's a lot of like spunk to it, you know?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. It's just like it always um makes me happy about like the future of music, you know?
>> Yes. Like there's just so much good music out there. There really is. And there continues to be and will continue to be, you know? Yeah. So, I don't know.
That's all I have to say.
>> [laughter] >> Like honestly, there's not much more to say with this. This has just been so great.
>> It is so much fun. It was so much fun.
It was cute and whimsical and interesting and it had texture and depth and it's all the things that just really like make you excited about art and Oh god, you're right.
You know, Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> down to the chair flute.
>> Yeah.
I mean, who does that? Who does that?
No, that's great. [laughter] It's so cool.
>> That's like something unique, you know?
>> I love that. Yeah. I love that's This is what I love about humanity. Like that you can look at a chair and be like, "What else can that do?"
>> Yeah, exactly. Although I I would say like man, the way Yeah, to balance the weight of that That's not going to be easy to play that considering >> Yeah. That the weight is so not distributed evenly there.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But she did fantastic job. Yeah, so much fun. So, I'm glad we did this.
