[00:00:17]Now, a lot of us grew up thinking love between men always had to be physical or that it had to be romantic, that the kind of thing you find in a book. But, there's a whole world of love that has nothing to do with that. This matters more as we get older.

[00:00:37]It shows up in more ways than most of us were taught. So, I want to lay out the versions that actually shape our lives.

[00:00:45]First up is platonic love. This is the deep friendship kind of love that is a steady, dependable connection where you know someone cares about you without needing anything from you.

[00:00:58]It's emotional closeness without the pressure of anything physical.

[00:01:03]Another type is familial love. Now, this includes chosen family as well as your biological families, and these are people who stay in your life because they want to and not because they share your DNA.

[00:01:18]Another type of love is communal love.

[00:01:21]Now, this is the feeling of belonging to a group of men who understand your experiences.

[00:01:27]It's the comfort of being part of something bigger than your own day-to-day life.

[00:01:33]And then there is self-love, and I don't mean the kind where you touch yourself.

[00:01:38]This is the internal kind of love that is a belief that you matter and that your needs count. It's not about pampering yourself, it's more about your own self-respect.

[00:01:51]And then there is romantic love. I think we all know what this is. This is the emotional bond that can exist with or without physical intimacy.

[00:02:08]Another form is brotherly love. Now, this is the one I think gay men rarely think about. Straight men, on the other hand, have built entire cultures around it through fraternities, sports teams, and even podcasts. It's often referred to as bro culture.

[00:02:27]There is loyalty, support, and emotional closeness. Yes, even in a podcast there's emotional closeness. And it is wrapped up in bro language, so no one questions it.

[00:02:39]But, it's still love.

[00:02:41]Gay men deserve that same kind of connection without being misunderstood or sexualized.

[00:02:48]Now, why gay men over the age of 50 deserve this kind of love.

[00:02:55]Um I'm going to be speaking directly, I think, to the men in my age group here.

[00:03:01]You deserve emotional love because you've lived long enough to know how important it is.

[00:03:07]You've had responsibilities, heartbreaks, friendships, losses, and joys that have shaped you into someone with depth and perspective.

[00:03:18]That alone makes you worthy of an ongoing, meaningful connection.

[00:03:23]You have spent years giving support to others, including friends, partners, co-workers, and sometimes even strangers.

[00:03:31]You've been the one people lean on and the one who listens when they talk.

[00:03:36]You were there for them when they needed you.

[00:03:38]You deserve to have people who do the same for you.

[00:03:42]And there is no age limit on being cared for, and there is no point in life where you stop needing connection.

[00:03:49]You don't age out of emotional closeness, nor do you lose your right to be valued.

[00:03:55]Now, gay culture often puts youth on a pedestal, and you see that everywhere.

[00:04:01]However, youth doesn't define your worth.

[00:04:05]You can bring humor, resilience, experience, and heart to the table.

[00:04:10]Your stories and perspectives are something that younger gay men don't have yet.

[00:04:15]You bring a sense of grounding that only comes with time.

[00:04:23]Emotional love is part of a full life, and you deserve a full life.

[00:04:28]So, now I'm going to give you five ways to nurture this kind of love.

[00:04:34]If you want more emotional connection in your life, you can build it. And it's not complicated, but it does take intention.

[00:04:43]Number one, be consistent with the people you care about.

[00:04:48]Reach out, follow through, and keep the friendship alive.

[00:04:53]Love grows when people know they can rely on you.

[00:04:56]Number two, let people know who you really are.

[00:05:01]Share your thoughts and feelings instead of keeping everything locked up.

[00:05:05]Emotional connection only happens when you let people see the real you. So, for some, it may be time to stop hiding yourself away.

[00:05:15]Number three, support other men without turning it into a competition.

[00:05:22]Give compliments freely, but still sincerely. Acknowledge their strengths and encourage your friends. When you lift other men up, you create a space for them to do the same for you.

[00:05:39]Find a way to stay in touch. Maybe set up a weekly coffee, a monthly dinner, or a standing phone call.

[00:05:57]Many older gay men are very comfortable giving support, but uncomfortable receiving it.

[00:06:33]No, love is about male connection and belonging and being valued by the people around you.
