[00:00:00]Hello, I'm Ernest Dickerson and welcome to Trailers from Hell. Today we're going to talk about Goldfinger.

[00:00:07]Now, Goldfinger is the movie that really started it all. The first two Bond films, Dr. No and From Russia with Love, were quite successful, but it was with this third film that the Bond formula finally gelled and turned 007 into a global phenomena.

[00:00:27]Look, he's gunning for trouble. 07. It spells Bond.

[00:00:43]Many of those elements to make a James Bond film finally came into focus in Goldfinger. the technology, the gadgets, the outstanding action choreography, the tongue-in-cheek humor, the extensive pre-redit sequences, and the visually stunning credit sequences with big Bond theme music sung by popular artists.

[00:01:00]>> The film's promotion was enormous.

[00:01:02]Shirley Eden's Golden Girl image even graced the cover of Life magazine.

[00:01:06]Goldfinger became the first Bond film to classify as a worldwide box office blockbuster.

[00:01:16]Goldfinger, a champ in thrill making cinema entertainment.

[00:01:19]>> The man, >> a three time winner for Fleming Secret Agent 007.

[00:01:35]>> Isn't it customary to grant the condemned man his last request?

[00:01:43]come and purr over Honor Blackman as [ __ ] galore.

[00:01:48]>> Adapted from a 1959 novel, the movie improves on the book in significant ways.

[00:01:54]>> The book's Oric Goldfinger intends to rob an empty Fort Knox, but even the movie's Bond tells him it would take 12 days to steal all that gold. The movie's Goldfinger reveals he actually intends to irradiate it by exploding an atomic bomb to make it inaccessible, thereby bankrupting the US and substantially expanding the value of his own personal gold stash.

[00:02:24]It spells Bond. James Bond mixing business with girls and thrills.

[00:02:41]>> Goldfinger intends to kill Bon with a circular buzz saw, but luckily by 1964, high-powered lasers existed, allowing for a more technologically elegant and less noisy way to threaten our hero.

[00:02:55]>> No, Mr. Bond. I expect you. Goodbye.

[00:02:58]>> Goldfinger was so successful it became the template for most of the future Bond films. It also sparked numerous knockoffs and define the aesthetics of action films to this very day.

[00:03:13]Unfortunately, Bond's creator did not live long enough to see the success of his labors. In Fleming died of a heart attack in August of 1964, a couple of months before Goldfinger's release. We can only hope he would have been very happy to see Goldfinger become the cinematic classic it is today.
