Going Where No Kerbal Has Gone Before...
Added:Hello everyone and welcome back to Journey to Everywhere, a Kerbal Space Program series where we are trying to visit every single celestial body in the game. And we are starting off today here with Jebediah Kerman who is currently on Laythe. Uh we landed here at the end of the last video and I say landed, uh we didn't quite make it in one piece as you can tell from the remains of our spaceplane here, but we do have to plant a flag cuz we didn't do that last time.
So, let's get Jebediah to plant a flag here in the surface. There we go. Now we have officially landed here on Laythe and we can head back to Kerbin to start our next adventure today.
So, here we are [music] back a little bit closer to home. We are orbiting Minmus with our space station at the moment which is still going along and producing a load of science. We've still got 1.43 days to get through which will get us to probably around 300 science.
These things are so good for generating science and we're going to want to transmit all of this back home so we can make a bit of progress in our tech tree before we head out into the solar system today. And as well as our space station, we've also got Gregsted Kerman here on his Mun rover driving around looking for features to analyze. So, we've already analyzed the small rock here and we analyzed a large crater, but there should be another feature for us to analyze here on the Mun and that is a small crater. So, if we find one of those, we'll get a bunch of science by analyzing it with this scanner arm here.
So, I'm going to drive around a little bit around the surface and see if I can find a tiny little crater for us to analyze.
And that really didn't take long. I think I've already found one. This looks like a small crater here. It's definitely a crater. It's whether it's a large one or not. I think this is definitely smaller than the one we found last time. So, we should be able to analyze this and get a bunch of science from that. So, we've got to park up nice and close.
We're going to come in a little bit fast. Okay.
Like that. I don't know if this is going to be close enough. Let's put the brakes on. There we go. Okay, let's scan this Mun crater. I'm pretty sure this is different to the one we got to the one we found the last time. So, we should get a whole load of science from that.
Look at Gregsted, he's so happy to be out on the Mun doing stuff.
There we go, zapping that crater, getting lots of data from it. Okay, Mun crater scan from the Mun surface. Is anyone up for a round of cosmic golf?
Once the Mun is fully explored, these craters may be may make amazing tourist destinations. Okay, cool. We can send that back to Ker- Kerbal and we'll get 60 science for it. Very nice. Right, let's transmit that right now. This rover is so funny, the way it sends the sends the data straight through Gregsted's forehead back to home. Right, there we go. Well done, Gregsted. 60 more science. Right, let's go spend this in the tech tree. Okay, so we're back in the space center now and we've got ourselves 417 science from our space station and from Gregsted driving around on the Mun, which means we can unlock some more parts for our spaceship. And today I want to get a proper relay system set up, so we're going to be unlocking the electronics here, so we can get these relay antennas and also the ground communicators, uh as well as some other science parts like a seismometer and a magnetometer. Okay, so we're going to research this and then we're going to send some probes out into the solar system. So at the moment we do have spaceships that are good enough to venture out into the outer solar system.
The problem is we don't have any way of communicating with them. So, I've got a few relays set up. This relay here uh is in a pretty terrible orbit. I was going to circularize it, but we weren't able to because it couldn't connect to Kerbin. It is connected at the moment, but when it's out as far as this, it couldn't connect. So, what we're going to want to do is have relay probes basically all over the solar system at every every orbital level out towards Jool, so that when we get to these planets, we can actually get science from it. We weren't able to gather any science from our trip to Laythe because, whilst we do have a Kerbal there, they have no way of communicating with home and sending back any data. So, let's get on with building some relay probes.
Okay, so we built ourselves a tiny little probe to send out into the solar system. Now, we're going to send a bunch of these things out. So, we've got a huge relay antenna on here. We've also got some smaller ones on the side. We've got a some huge solar panels as the small solar panels, some battery packs.
And this thing is just going to be dumped into orbit around the sun and we're going to go ahead and put a load of these out into the solar system.
We've got a sent vehicle and all of this stuff to take us out into the sun's orbit. So, let's head out.
So, we have now got a bunch of relay probes out in our solar system. If we head to the tracking station, we can actually have a look. It looks pretty cool. We've got loads of rings going around the sun.
Here we go. Yeah, we've got a nice little web of links links here. So, we can we should be able to communicate with Kerbin pretty much anywhere we go now.
Jewel and Eeloo might still be a bit of a stretch, so we might have to send some more out in future. But, for today's video, we're going to be going to somewhere pretty strange. I have never seen this place before. I don't know if it was recently added or if this is a mod or something. Uh Drez, is that right? Is that how you say that? Yeah, we're going to be going to this place here. Looks like a tiny little rock um kind of in the middle of the solar system. I've never seen anyone go to this thing before and I didn't even know it existed. So, I guess we'll go have a look and see if it's real and see if if really out there. But, we've got to build a craft in order to do that. So, let's get a craft to take us to Duna.
So, here we have a craft that should be capable of making it out to Duna. We've got the mystery machine here. Uh this is our lander up the top here. This is going to be going down to the surface of this weird planet. We've got our nuclear engines to do our interplanetary transfer. And then we've got our ascent stage here to get us up into orbit of Kerbin and out of that pesky atmosphere before we can get out into space. So, all that's left to do now is to wait for a Duna transfer window. Okay, our craft is ready on the launchpad. We are in a transfer window. Now it's time to head off to this mysterious planet and send a Kerbal where no Kerbal has gone before.
So, let's lift off.
So, we've got Tomcan floating here in interplanetary space at the moment. And I thought while we were out here, we might as well do a crew report and get zero science from that. Okay, I thought we hadn't done that before because it's always been out of reach of Kerbin, but apparently we have. What about an EVA report? Will we get any science for this? EVA report, nothing. Okay, never mind. Uh but that's fine because Tomcan is currently on a trajectory for a very close encounter with this mysterious planet. We are coming in 22,000 m above the surface. That's uh very close encounter. So, we can time warp up to that surface and try and burn ourselves into orbit. We've still got a lot of fuel left in the nuclear stage here. So, we should have more than enough to orbit ourselves and then go down towards the surface.
So, after 1 year and 196 days in space, Tomcan can finally see that mysterious planet in the sky over there, that little lump of rock. We are now in our Duna encounter, and we are heading very close to the surface. 18,000 m. I have put a quick save down cuz I'm a little bit worried that we're going to come in a bit too close and maybe hit a really high mountain or something. Uh there also seems to be these uh large asteroids in a ring around the planet, which is pretty cool. So, we're going to get as close as we can and then we're going to burn hard to try and bring ourselves into orbit.
Okay, there is the surface. We're going to start our burn now to slow ourselves down as much as possible. Going to get 13,000 m a second. 1,300 m a second at the moment. We should be okay to slow down in time so we can uh get into orbit of this thing. Uh it looks very strange.
It looks kind of similar to the moon, right? But uh yeah, I've never been here before. I don't think anyone's ever been here before. Uh this is a a very kind of pointless planet, but uh we're going to try and land on its surface and have Tomcat send back some science from down there.
That is a humongous crater over there. I think there's a canyon as well somewhere in Dres's on Dres's surface. Maybe we'll try and land as close to the canyon as possible once we get into orbit. We're bringing our orbital speed right down now. 800 m a second. We shouldn't shouldn't be too long. I guess this is a very small planet if it's uh if orbital speed's that slow.
If we have a quick look from inside Tomcan's lander, you can see the surface from in here. And that is us Oh my goodness, the camera freaked out a bit there, but that is us in orbit now. So, we're going to bring it in nice and close to the surface.
So, I've been using our map views try and find the canyon and I think it's this part here. This looks canyon canyon-like to me. So, I think we're going to try and land as close to this feature as possible. If we time warp so our orbit is above it and then we'll come down to the surface. Yeah, I I thought it was more distinct than that, but I think that must be the canyon.
We are now directly above the Dres canyon here. So, we're going to burn our orbital speed down to pretty much to zero and then drop off these nuclear engines and let them crash down to the surface. I'm sure that's that's fine, right? Just dumping nuclear material on the surface of this tiny planet.
So, there we go. We haven't got much orbital velocity to kill. We'll get down as close to zero as we can. We probably can get to zero using this stage. These nuclear engines are so efficient. They are great.
There we go. Orbital speed of 3 m/s.
Yep, I think that should do us fine. I'm going to point the craft a little bit towards the canyon and fire fire slightly that way. Okay, now we can go ahead and dump that stage.
And let out our lander legs. We've got more than enough fuel to land on the surface. This is a very small planet, so it won't take much to slow us down on our entry to the surface.
So, we're pretty close to the surface now. We've got the canyon here. These look like maybe ice sheets along here as well. It's a pretty cool feature. Oh, there's something some very cool kind of runoff channels there as well. It looks like water has flowed down into the canyon at some point. All right, we are now too close to the surface to time warp, so I guess we're just drifting down looking for our shadow. Where's the sun? Okay, the shadow should be over this way somewhere. I don't see it yet. We should probably slow down a little bit. Don't want to hit the surface at 100 m/s. That wouldn't end very well for Tom can at all.
I am worried this isn't a very smooth part of ground a part of the surface that we're heading towards. I don't know how easy it's going to be to land here.
We might have to take a few tries at this. Okay, we are still coming in very fast. I still don't see our shadow, though.
There it is. Okay, very nice. Right, we are very close to the surface now. We want to hit the ground at less than 10 m/s. Maybe six 6 m/s should be all right.
There we go. Nice and slowly.
Touchdown. Perfect. So, there we go. We have made it all the way to this mysterious planet. Right, let's get Tomcan to head out and have a look.
We'll deploy the ladder, although I think the gravity on this planet is so so tenuous that uh he'll definitely be able to just jump back up to the cockpit on his own.
Okay, he is too wide to fit between these two canisters. So, I guess we're not losing the not using the ladder.
We're just jumping down to the surface.
There we go. We made it to the surface of this strange world, Duna.
So, let's go ahead and plant a flag in the surface here.
Very nice. Another celestial body ticked off the list here in KSP. And while Tom Kerman's down here, we will also grab ourselves a surface sample.
There we go. Let's see what it says.
Surface sample from Duna's ridges. You find traces of a large number of elements likely deposited here by impacts over time. Very nice. Okay, we'll keep that data. We'll transmit it back home for 60 science, which isn't bad. Um Tom Kerman may just be realizing he's not going home anytime soon. We've got enough fuel in the lander probably to send him back into orbit and probably to escape to into an escape velocity of Duna as well. But, not quite enough to make it back to Kerbol, and he definitely wouldn't be able to re-enter the atmosphere in this pod anyway. So, at some point we'll have to send a rescue mission for him, but not today because today he has science to send home. There we go. We get 63.7 science out of this, and we can actually transmit it because of our relay network as well. Look at that. We're connected to Oh, it seems like we're connected straight to Kerbin.
We'll also do a crew report as well.
That'll be another 40 science, and then we can do an EVA report, which I forgot to do whilst we were out. So, if he just jumps out now, I don't know if this counts as being on the surface or not.
Let's find out. If we do a crew an EVA report, yeah, from Duna's ridges. This isn't space over Duna. Okay, great. So, well done, Tom Kerman. Your mission has granted us a lot of science, probably about 200 science from this. But, that is all I've got time for in today's video. I hope you enjoyed.
