The Pendle Witch Trials of 1612 were a series of witchcraft trials in Lancashire, England, where 12 people were executed, largely based on the testimony of a nine-year-old girl whose mother was also accused; the trials reflect the historical fear of witchcraft and the harsh legal consequences faced by those accused, with the Pendle Heritage Center now preserving this dark chapter of English history.

We Went Looking for the Original Pendle Witch Shop 🇬🇧Added:
What a view, eh? Pretty that, isn't it?
Pretty that. Now, I wasn't sure if I was going to film today cuz today it's actually my birthday. Yep. Don't ask me how old I am. Should stop saying that, shouldn't I? When uh should stop saying it's my birthday when you get to my age, really. right now. I wasn't going to film because we've come away uh to Bolton by Boland and to this uh in kind of like a restaurant with rooms and um yeah, it's on the old sign there.
They've got coach and horses, but I think they call it um what do they call it now? You can see on here coach and horses. Look at that. Whoa, where's my gimbal? Look at that.
Yeah, this is I'll just show you this room quickly. This is fantastic room.
So, we've got tons of space. Really comfortable double bed. We've got these Where's Let me just try and we'll start that again. We'll reset the gimbal.
Right. There we go. Look at that. See like how much room we've got in this on the nightstands there. Got this lovely old oak huge old wardrobe in there. And the this this is cool. Got like 1960s Dell's men magazines. A bit of a vintage.
There's a lot of vintage sort of um well antique really pictures around this hotel like little uh like hunting prints uh you know uh horse horsey things, stuff like that. Very good. It's very very tasteful. But yeah, it's been just one night away, so I wasn't sure I was going to film, but it's so beautiful. And the um this little village built by Boland. I'm going to have a little walk around there in a minute, and we'll have a look. I'll just show you what the bathroom looks like in here.
Great big shower in here.
Fantastic shower. Look at that.
And then the shower there. You get all the You get all the lotions and potions in here. Look, all topped stuff. Very nice, isn't it? Nice big sink in there.
Yeah.
And these we haven't used these, but nice branded branded stuff there.
Yeah. Also, we've not really use this either. Coffee coffee station here. Cups or chocolates. Bits and bobs.
Now, as I say, it's just my birthday, so we weren't really planning to make a big video, but we'll see if it we see how it comes out. We did um so we didn't we came here last night. We had dinner, which phenomenal. The the the puddings.
The dinner was really good. We had um we have I had like a vegetarian uh tart and Mrs. Emerson had steak. It's happening again. And always get the opposites, but that was really really good. of the puddings um were like probably the best puddings we've ever had in our lives to be honest. We did send send our compliments to the chef.
So yeah, we did that. Um we did take some pictures. So hopefully I can drop drop a few pictures in um of what we had also breakfast. Took a couple of pictures at breakfast just to you know just to sort of document what we what we what we were having. So again I'll try and drop those in if those turn out okay. bit haphazard today, but we'll we'll see how the day goes. So, we're going to go out, have a look around the village, and then there's something there's like a Roman site or an abbey or something pretty close as well. So, maybe I just have a a potter around, take it easy, like a slow day, and uh see what we can find. Right, let's go and find first. Speaking of finding, where's Mrs. Emerson gone? I have to go and find her first. Right, come on.
Okay, we're just going to show you around this little village which is Bolton by Boland.
Bolton by Bolton. The the Bolton by Boland. It's a strange name that, isn't it? Oh, good morning, Mr. Samson.
>> Hi.
>> How do you like this place?
>> I love it.
>> All right.
I want to just film across there because they've got, see this old uh door here, 21. Looks like a medieval door. That, doesn't it? With the nails. It's got the old See the square nails to make the door together.
Absolutely beautiful.
Okay, there is the coach and horses where we stayed last night.
Got another medieval door here. Look at this.
Wow.
Fantastic. Oh, look at this place. It's like idllic idelic village. Got houses here around the village square. And then we've got a church up there in the background. Got two crosses. You got a new cross there.
And you've got the old like a more of a medieval cross. It's kind of worn away quite a lot, isn't it? You see, you got the old stocks there.
>> Mhm.
>> That's where they put people if they're naughty. But they put them in those stocks and they throw rotten fruit at them. They can't get out.
>> That's embarrassing.
>> Those were the days though, weren't they?
>> Bring it back.
>> Yeah, bring it back. Bring back stocks.
Stocks and shares. No, I I I overheard them saying also that they need they have to keep these houses like the same, like the doors, the colors the same, and they're really >> Yeah. There's like quite strict sort of T's and C's on living somewhere like this. Look at that little terrace up there. That's beautiful, isn't it?
What we on here? Hyfields Road.
Okay, I do apologize for filming people's humble abodess, but that's just too good not to, isn't it? I mean, look at that utree cottage. You got Look at that. Look at the I guess that's the Utree, is it?
>> Yeah.
>> They got Wisteria around the door. We're just about on time for Wisteria coming out, aren't we?
Amazing.
Look at this pathway. This is crazy.
We just asked that like kind lady if we could get through to the church and she's like, "Oh yeah, come up this way or you can go that way." She didn't talk like that. I don't know why. Oh, look.
of a pheasant. Hello.
What idllic place is this.
This greenhouse there.
Don't fall. Looks like we go around this way. Hopefully, it'll come out on a normal. I think this is like someone's drive, isn't it?
Basically. Hopefully, we come out on a normal road. Oh, look at the name of that. Jerusalem Hill.
Oh, beautiful, isn't it? Look at that.
So nice.
Oh, we've got another green here.
That's what she said. Go. You can go up to the other green. Wow.
It's like a schoolhouse at the end. It looks like there.
And we've got this looks a little bit medieval on the left and then a little bit later addition on the right. It's got bigger sort of slightly bigger windows.
So that's interesting building. Look at this village green. It's crazy, isn't it? Right, we'll keep going around. Hopefully we get to the church around here. This village.
Unbelievable.
>> It's just beautiful.
M I think that's me, Mrs. Emerson. I smell nice.
>> Very floral.
>> Oh, plenty of shape in this village. If you like shape, there's a couple of lambs still lming about.
All right.
Couple of lambs still laming about.
>> Can you explain it to me? I don't know.
I get it. These are little cottages, aren't they? These these also are pretty old. These must have been like workers cottages at one at one time. Low doorways on those.
This looks a bit more stately through there. Must be a house at the end of it. Oh, we found a church.
At this location, there is a Commonwealth war grave. Oh, well, we'll see if we can find that actually.
We go up here.
There goes the postman.
It says come in. We're open. But that I'm not sure how long this sign has been here. Here.
Let's have a look. Wait.
Okay, let's go.
Is that the wind?
Heat. Hey, heat. Hey, heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
What does that say?
>> 1705.
Look at this door. Like that's proper made just like um fortified door, isn't it? With these bolts through it.
See in the back they've been cut off of the bolts gone.
Keep people out, doesn't it? Keep the zombies out.
Get too many zombies around these parts.
Hopefully just one or two.
Look at that. The old rectory tree.
Sounds like that's a bit of a bit of a restoration.
Oh, hello. There we go. Bit of a resto project. Be nice when it's finished, won't it? Nice when it's done.
Right, we've done a bit of a loop up there. where we went. We loop back around by the church back down to the coaching horses and then we're going to get on our merry way. Don't really know where we're going. We might go into further on, might we?
>> Although there is some interesting things that on this road. There's an old abbey.
And there's a ro there's some Roman remains somewhere. It might turn to a bit of a historical day. Who knows? We will see.
There's the river going through and there is the amazing sign.
Just stopped along the roadside just out of the just out of the village. I've come across this archway. Look at this.
Is that crazy?
Look at the old carvings on this.
Wow. Stone arch. There's like just a farmer's gate in the middle of it and it goes through. There's nothing behind it.
However, on this side, we've got an abbey. Looks like a very old ruin of an abbey. We'll go and have a quick look at this. Oh, hello.
Sor abarian monsters founded in blahy blahy blahy blahy blah 1147 basically.
Uh, looks like it's free.
Free to enter, not to maintain. All right, we hear you. We hear you. Wa.
That was quite a It's quite a sight, isn't it?
>> Not a huge amount left. Not a huge amount left of it. You look over here, you see the main part. So, left. We got some.
Looks like they've uh documented all of these bits and bobs. Look, numbers.
They've all got numbers on it. Must mean something to somebody. Look at all these in here. This is crazy, isn't it?
Looks like a medieval Amazon, doesn't it? All parcled up with labeled ready to go.
Should we have a quick look? Is it too grassy for you?
too grassy. Not got the right shoes on.
I got the right shoes on today. Right, I'm going to I'm going to have very quick, very quick look at this abic. It's quite uh quite interesting the age that 12th century, isn't it? Crazy. Look at this.
See what's left of it. There's nobody here. Absolutely nobody here. Look. Oh, there's quite a bit in here.
The Abbey Church, is it?
Sign's gone.
Bit worse for wear, isn't it? Look at this.
Oh, wow.
The church looks like a maybe crypts in there. Crypts. It's cryptic what it was to be honest. Can't imagine.
Very nice. Got some uh still see some of the old steps going up there. It looks like they not really blocked it off.
Suppose they want you climbing up anything, but not really blocked it off, have they? If we go up here, I don't want to walk up that is a bit crumbly, isn't it? Just is just going to wear if everyone everyone walks up there.
There'll be nothing left of it, will there? In a few years. Yeah.
Interesting. This looks like the the biggest bit. That looks like a an accident waiting to happen to be honest.
That overhang there could come down in anything. Uh bad weather, couldn't it?
Look at that.
I think they've cemented a bit. They've sealed a bit of it up. So, they're putting in new bits of new cement in there. So, yeah. Quite a big site though. all the way back to the to that hut there and the wall have been walled in and all the way around and another building at the end.
So yeah, quite a sight. And this is next to Bolton by Boland in between there and Clive Row. So we're in we're next to Pendle Hill here. You know the old Pendle witches? Pendle Hill. Actually, I wonder if we could see that. I don't know how far we are from Pendle Hill. Do you know how far we are from the Pendle Witches?
Might need to Google that, won't we?
>> Yeah. I might be able to go and see the old Witcheroos.
>> Okay.
>> Who knows?
Right. So, we've come to the the museum Pendle Heritage Center in uh near Clive in Lanasher and um M's just checking parking now. It's one 25 little car park across the road. It opens.
We've got about 20 minutes or so before it opens. I think we can just kind of cross over. See people going in over there and we'll have a look around. It looks quite medieval. Now, this is famous. Pendle is famous, of course, for the witches and the witch trials of Lanasher and um in the I don't even know what year it was, but we're going to find out all about Pendle Witches. And I believe the witches got like burnt to a steak.
>> Oh.
>> Ooh. I'm coming over all telescopic.
This looks like the toll house here. So, that probably would have had a gate gate across the road. Oh, you can see the prices. Horse and cattle one D coaches free shillings.
Wagons, three shillings. Carts, one shilling.
It's expensive, isn't it? Prices even in those days were going up. The old Georgian dragon here.
You looking for a birthday card, Mr. Samson?
>> Two.
>> Two birthday cards. Right. I'll have a look inside.
Just come to the town.
It's a tiny little Have you Do they have any cards in here? Oh, one or two. Okay.
All right. That was quite interesting little shoparooni. We had We went in to look at cars, but they also had It's like a little uh maze in there, wasn't it? It's like a rabbit warren or something. Could wander around. Had a cafe with fudge making kits. all sorts chocolates. It's over there. Look, what's it called? Beastro 7 through there. Um, not sponsored. So, yeah, we didn't get anything in the end cuz there was no one on the hill, but there you go. It's quiet. So, we're going to We've come up. We've seen little bit of the of the could call it a town. It's just sort of a main road, isn't it? But we're going to wander up now through the park.
Which way? I think we'll go up up and we'll see if um the museum is open cuz it opens at 12:00. I think it's getting on for 12 now, isn't it? Oh, time check.
Is there a time check?
>> Oh, forgot about those. 11:47. Right. By the time we get there, probably be open.
Nice park list, though.
>> Mhm.
>> Well kept, isn't it? I like a good lawn that's well kept.
There it is. Pendle Heritage Center.
They do have a cafe.
I think that's just Is that just the tea rooms? No. Museum. Let's go and have a look.
Oh, hey.
So, this started 1450 through the ages up to 1780.
>> Not bad.
>> I like the little models.
The old locks in here.
Just say how you open the door.
So this is 17th century then fireplace would have occupied the entire room.
>> This is how they would have lived 17th century. That would be you there cleaning, sweeping up. That's me sitting down there.
>> Enjoying myself.
What's for dinner?
Bread again.
Go. Pendle witches 1612.
This tells you all about it here then, doesn't it? Story of the Pendle witches.
Look at that. That's a bit satanic, isn't it? Look at that picture.
So they were taken to they were taken from here to Lancaster and they were try tried at Lancaster and then either acquitted or hung and you can see a picture over here being hung Lancaster possess supernatural powers.
Oh, so spooky.
Invisible witchcraft monuments.
Spooky.
All right, let's have a look through here.
>> Telescopic.
>> I've gone a bit telescopic in here.
>> Smells nice.
>> This smells nice, doesn't it?
Look at that. They had nice gardens, didn't they? Those days, >> medieval times.
Oh, hello.
>> What did you think of that weird um >> witch house?
>> Very confusing.
>> I think it's So, so this is where Alice Nutter lived then. It seems like this entire family and then they did it said that they confessed to murdering like quite a few people on those boards. It's a bit creepy, isn't it? And then they were taken to over to Lancaster and by the neck. But if they were tortured, of course they were from >> Oh, yeah. You You don't know. You don't know what's going on, do you? I mean, it's too long ago to There's no witnesses still alive, is there? From like the 1500s, 1600s, whatever it was.
But yeah, this house has definitely got an atmosphere to it. It's like really creepy, isn't it?
>> Anyway, >> yeah, lovely thing to do on your birthday. Get creeped out in a witch's house. Anyway, we've got Americano.
See? See?
>> So, not too bad, actually. And we've got a little millionaire shortbread. I guess this is my official birthday cake, isn't it?
Really? Happy birthday to me.
>> First cake.
>> Not much caramel in there.
>> It's very nice.
>> Is it >> like really good? Yeah. Homemade.
Can't wait.
>> I want to see that map cuz there's another witch museum, isn't there?
Somewhere. And it's hard to know which one to go to.
>> Where did you say it was?
>> Yeah.
>> New church in Penzo.
Is that far?
>> It can't be far, can it?
>> I don't actually know where we are.
We are >> in Barfield somewhere.
>> We came down there through Blacko into Barrelfield. Yeah, that's over there.
>> Barford. So, it's over to there.
>> Have to maybe go up that little road.
I think we should try it. Do you see as we're here?
>> Never been here before.
>> Probably never be here again.
>> Vote in a common.
It >> doesn't work like Oh, have a little look around some sail plants. Yeah, I just been reading about those witches.
Spooked me out a bit to be honest with you. So the whole thing, the whole Pendle witch trial is based on this a 9-year-old girl's testimony basically who was the daughter of one of the witches who gave evidence in court when her mother came into court and she was going to give evidence. Her mother like went mad. She was screaming and cursing.
They had to remove her from the courtroom before the evidence could be heard. So basically it's like yeah, you've like convicted yourself basically. So like the family was like put to death because of this nine-year-old girl testimony. Anyway, I thought, "Oh, I wonder what happened to her." So I was searching out on Wikipedia, not sponsored, and um it said that later in her life, she was accused of witchcraft by a 10year-old boy and um she went to jail. But um the boy it well it said on Wikipedia that the boy later said that he made it up basically. So she was accused of witchcraft went to jail and then it said years later she was still in jail. She probably she couldn't afford a jail bond or what for whatever reason. So what goes around comes around basically doesn't it? But yeah it's creepy. It's creeping me out. Anyway, I don't think they actually lived in this house. I just think this is the Pendle Museum where it basically tells the story of what went on.
>> Well, that's the heritage >> is the heritage of Pendle, isn't it?
Now, there is another place further deeper into uh the the bowels of Pendle where being metaphorical uh where uh there's another witch place, isn't there? Which I think is the one in all the pictures with the witches in the window. Which one we should have gone to first? No one knows, right? What we're going to do, we'll have a little look around these gardens and maybe we'll get over there. Yeah, >> the cactus is too far.
>> Ah, it's um It's a bit prickly for me.
Yeah. Circle back.
>> Wait, no. Where is the cactus?
Actually, actually, maybe I do want a cactus.
Two.
>> Two pound.
>> They're actually good, aren't they?
>> They are actually good.
>> We would have to carry it though, wouldn't we? Would it fit in your bag?
>> Yeah.
>> Have we got £2? Yeah, I got >> Which one should we get?
>> It's your birthday.
>> Oh, hello.
>> Uh, I don't I I'm don't trust those red ones. They look pie poisonous, don't they?
>> Really?
>> Yeah. Oh, you want that one?
>> I can have two if you want.
>> Oh. Oh, hello. I like the pot with that one. Look at that. Viscus Viola.
Vivaceious Viola. Whatever it says. No, let's get one.
>> Sure.
>> Is it okay? It's not like >> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay. We're going to get it.
Happy birthday.
>> All right. Birthday cacti.
>> I need change.
>> We all need change.
>> We'll just have a little walk around.
We'll show these gardens off. So, this is not I This is not witches gardens. I thought this was like a witch's house.
It's not. It's just the Pendle Pendle uh gardens. A museum gallery museum. Oh, look at this. There's a bit of a woodland walk this way. Wow. Wow.
Oh my goodness.
Wow.
You won't believe it through here. It's crazy.
>> What?
>> Look at up there.
>> Oh my god.
>> That's adilic, isn't it?
>> Oh god.
>> I'm coming over all the >> There you go. Take a photo. Get a photo of it. There you go.
>> This is crazy. Look at it. It's madness.
It's madness. Got a little brook down there.
Duck.
>> Another picture.
>> Yeah.
>> All right.
>> Wow. It's so beautiful. It >> is, isn't it? You can smell all this wild garlic. Look at that. Really strong.
>> Down. You can see there's the T- rooms there. And >> make a way. Make a >> I don't know if I've got >> Hey, should I scrabble down there? We could get quite a bit out of there, could we?
>> I see a pound there.
>> There's a pound. Should we go in? I'm going in for it.
For it.
>> No, we don't want to want to take people's wishes away, do we? I put more >> cents for you.
>> €10.
>> Does it take international money?
All right.
My wishes may all my wishes come true.
>> There's still a lot of museum in here.
>> You made a wish. There's another little museum in here, you know.
>> Yeah. So many museums in here. It's like for gardening things.
>> Smells like a basement.
>> Basement flat. could live in this.
How much would the rent be on this? Be cheap, wouldn't it? Look, get your own lawn mower.
Happy days.
Check out these gardens. Look at this.
Wow.
That's so nice. Put a lot of work into these, don't they?
All right, there we go. That was a Pendle Heritage Center. Now, we don't think it's not as witchy as we first imagined, is it? It does tell the story of the Pendle Witches, which we got spooked out by, but I think we're going to go to a place that's even more spooky. So, stick with us.
>> Oh, can I just say something?
>> Yeah.
>> It's worth coming here just for the cafe.
>> Oh, 100%. Yeah, it is 100%.
Homemade uh foods in there, isn't it?
Cake was very good.
Oh, try and get ourselves across here now. Here we go. Hurry, hurry, hurry.
Car park just across the road.
Oh, that's beautiful, isn't it? That pub across the river past the bayos.
Go left, >> isn't it? Oh, look. There's the statue of uh what was her name? Alice.
>> Alice Nutter. Look.
>> Careful.
>> All right. There's nobody here. Look.
Can pull up there. Look. Alice Nutter.
It's a bit creepy, isn't it?
>> It is.
>> Imagine uh walking here at night with no street lights and you see that. Why would you walk here at night?
>> Just, you know, >> for the vibes.
>> For the vi for the witchy vibes.
>> Maybe you forgot which way to go.
Brilliant.
Beautiful country around here, isn't it?
This is the real Lanasher. This folks, it's what Lanasher is all about.
Country roads and wage trials.
Look at the old milk churn there. Look.
Do you think that's decorative or do you think they're actually leaving milk for someone to collect? I think they're that's actually real.
>> Try it.
Bet it's curdled by now, isn't it? Oh, >> curdled.
Right. It's got to be down here, isn't it? Somewhere.
>> About half a mile away. Is >> Are you feeling witchy yet? Is it getting a bit witchy down here?
We need a We need a new witch finder general, don't we? To get all the witches out.
You think of anyone?
>> Yeah, I deliver it today. Look >> cows.
Got to be the the greatest field for cows ever, hasn't it? Living their best life in there. Best cow life.
Look at that car. Look, it's had its eyes poked out.
Definitely witches around here. Even the cars have got their eyes poked out.
Right. It's got It's up here, I think.
Isn't it?
>> The old uh real witch museum.
Right. Look, I think it's there. I can see witchy signs there. The signs were there all along.
Ben, new church. New church in Pendle.
Look at that. All the old signs there, haven't they? Old 1950s road signs. Brilliant.
There it is. Look. Witches galore.
Wow. This is definitely the place.
Says it's open. I don't know. Does it look open?
Did they live of the witches or do you know >> in the villages around here? Yeah.
>> Right. All right. in between here and South London.
>> Right. Not in this house though.
>> No, no, no, it wasn't.
>> Oh, wasn't it?
>> Of course. Yeah.
>> No, I think 1785 England. This was >> right. All right.
>> We cottages.
>> And what happened to the I I've just been reading about it, but what happened to the girl that accused? Do you know the history of it?
>> Eventually got executed at one time.
>> Did she? Right. All right. For witchcraft. Yes.
>> Yeah. What goes around comes around then, doesn't it?
>> Yeah.
That's a winter. That's panda. I want to Oh, that's >> Mhm. Are these a bit less faded to shop?
Definitely got to get one, haven't we?
Side quest.
>> Oh, there we go. That was the real original Lancasher witch witches shop that we found. What did you think of it, Mrs. Emerson?
I expected more.
>> Oh, hello.
It's like I don't think anybody comes.
>> I don't think anybody comes here, do they? It's like in the middle of nowhere, literally. I don't think anybody comes here. It's a It's really off the beaten track. We went in there and this great it was like silent. We looked around and this massive dog just jumped up onto the counter. I was like, "Oh my god, that that spooked me out more than the flipping witches did."
Right. Anyway, he said we couldn't film in there, didn't he? So, we stopped filming. It's like, "No, no, film it."
It says on the door, "No filming." So, we didn't really film in there.
Although, we did. So, we'll put that in.
Um, yeah. And we got a couple of things that graphic We got a graphic novel about the whole history.
>> So, I can read up exact exactly what happened later on. And we got a fridge magnet for our collection. So, happy days. Right. Let's get on our way.
That's cool, isn't it?
Do you want to have a look in?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
Look inside.
Look at this.
>> The Wales.
A Welsh dragon, isn't it?
Vintage.
Some amazing things in here.
Yeah.
So, we're just in the town of Cleo, right? And we're going to have a little look around, see what there is. Couple of antique shops there. Had a look.
Interiors.
We definitely have been here before, but not for a while, for a year or so.
So, we'll check it out. I don't think we've ever been to this street to be honest. No.
>> Few nice shops across there. Cafe beastro.
>> Oh, cakes. It is my birthday after all.
>> It is.
>> There's the castle. Can't really see.
It's under wraps. I don't think it' be much point looking at today as it's under wraps. So, we'll he's going across, right? We'll go down the main the main street. Remember this street?
Usually park right at the other end.
Yeah. We've come in the opposite way and we usually go to that cafe over there in the middle. But you'll you probably remember it when you see it.
Mrs. Emerson going into her favorite shop in the UK.
A daily trip to Boots. She probably won't buy anything.
>> Did you get anything?
>> No, >> she didn't buy anything. Charity shop here. It looks a bit hard to get in.
Actually, to be honest, it's not going. It's just new stuff in there. Sometimes you have like a lot of antiques in those charity shops.
Sometimes you can see from the door, it's just all like new stuff, you know?
So, who wants new when you can't have old? That's what I always say. Look at that. See cafer there. Do you remember going in that one?
>> No, I don't.
>> I've never been here.
