Jurors reveal key evidence that led them to convict Utah mom Kouri Richins of murder

[00:00:00]Two jurors who found Corey Richens guilty of killing her husband with a fatal dose of fentinel are speaking out to 48 hours. Last week, a judge sentenced the Utah mother to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2022 murder of her husband, Eric. The mother of three made national headlines after publishing a children's book about grief. Richens has always maintained her innocence. Now, in the season finale of 48 Hours, Natalie Morales takes a closer look at the evidence that led jurors to convict Richens.

[00:00:36]>> At Corey Richen's sentencing for the murder of Eric Richens, her husband and father of their three sons. She declared her innocence to the court and to her children. As much as you've been influenced into thinking that dad was murdered, that I took your dad from you, that is completely wrong and an absolute lie.

[00:00:57]>> But for jurors on the case, the evidence told a different story.

[00:01:01]>> She basically sacrificed her husband to get what she wanted.

[00:01:05]>> I came to see her as pretty cold and pretty calculating. Jurors Laura and Eric, who asked we not use their last names, are convinced that Corey Richens murdered her husband by poisoning him with a fentinel spiked cocktail. My hands are not breathing. Keep cold.

[00:01:23]>> An important piece of evidence for the jurors was Corey Richen's 911 call.

[00:01:28]>> 1 2 3 4. Am I on speaker?

[00:01:32]>> Yes. The operator repeatedly asked that the phone be put on speaker so Richen's hands could be free to perform CPR, but a prosecution digital forensic analyst testified that phone receiver sensor activity showed she instead held the phone to her ear. That means she wasn't doing compressions or if she was, she was doing it with one hand.

[00:01:55]>> Evidence was presented that money was her motive. After three hours of deliberations, the jurors were ready to deliver their guilty verdict. Though it was not a moment they were looking forward to. It wasn't that we didn't believe what we had decided. It was just sadness.

[00:02:15]>> Sadness for the Richen's children who lost their father due to their mother.

[00:02:20]Something Eric Richen's sister Katie spoke about at sentencing. His three sons are going to grow up and live nearly their entire lives without their dad because their mother planned and carried out his murder. She could not have done anything more selfish or more cruel to those boys.
