The UK is experiencing its hottest May day on record, with temperatures potentially reaching 35°C in the Southeast, while most of England and Wales will see temperatures in the 30s Celsius; this exceptional heat is accompanied by high UV levels, rising pollen counts, and a risk of tropical nights where temperatures remain above 20°C, making it unusually warm even for midsummer months.

25/05/2026 - Temperatures rising - Morning Weather Forecast UK – Met Office WeatherHinzugefügt:
Good morning. Today is expected to be the hottest day ever recorded in May in the UK. So, some exceptionally high temperatures over the next couple of days. Across the northwest of Scotland though, it's a very different story.
Here we do have much more in the way of cloud. And there will continue to be some bits and pieces of rain at times through the course of today. Mainly for the islands, the heedes, the northern half of Highland, Orne, and Shhatland.
But for the vast majority of the UK, it's going to be a dry and sunny day once again. Temperatures quickly lifting in that strong May sunshine. So by this afternoon we will see much higher temperatures compared to over the weekend and the core of the heat will be a bit more widespread. So 30s perhaps up into northern England, parts of Wales as well and parts of the Midlands, the east of England and particularly the Southeast will probably see temperatures nudging towards the mid30s Celsius. So it's likely to be, as I say, record-breaking. The current UK highest temperature ever recorded in May is 32.8° 8° C, but there's a chance that we could even see locally temperatures as high as 35 C. So, that's exceptionally hot even for midsummer months, let alone in May. And it will also be a warmer day for parts of the north, too. Northern Ireland and southern Scotland should see temperatures getting into the mid20s Celsius here. So, a pleasantly warm afternoon to come here. Now, you'll need to head to the beaches and the coastal regions if you want some rest bite from the heat. here will have some sea breezes giving a bit more of a refreshing feel to the thing to the weather. But do bear in mind that the sea is pretty chilly this time of the year if you are um expecting to go for a dip. Now there's very strong sunshine as well. High levels of UV and indeed pollen levels are on the climb as well as we go through the next few days.
We're entering the grass and the weed pollen season. So if you are a hay fever sufferer and you haven't really had too many symptoms so far this year, then the next few days may be a bit troublesome for you.
Now, as we go through this evening, if you've got plans for bank holiday Monday evening, the weather will be fine, sunny, and very warm well on into the evening. And it will actually start to turn drier and clearer overnight across the northwest of Scotland as well. So, by the end of the night, it should be largely dry with some clear spells, temperatures falling away into potentially single figures in the Highlands, in the Glenns, but in the south in particular, it's going to be another warm night, potentially um quite sticky and uncomfortable for sleeping.
and temperatures may not fall below 19 or 20°, especially in the more urban areas. If temperatures don't fall below 20°, well, that will be another record broken for May in the UK. And it's a term that we often refer to as a tropical night, something that's pretty exceptionally rare, even in midsummer months and unheard of in May. So, it does mean that Tuesday will start on once again a sunny and very warm note across England and Wales. temperatures rapidly rising in that strong sunshine once again. But we could just see that heat spark, one or two very, very isolated heavy showers or thunderstorms by the afternoon, particularly across parts of Wales. But most places will miss these even if they do occur and stay entirely dry. A much sunnier, bright day to come across the northwest of Scotland. A bit breezy, yes, but warmer than over the last few days. And many places will remain dry. Bit more way of cloud coming into northeastern parts of England, though. And that will certainly peg temperatures back um much more so than over the last few days. So only highs into the high teens perhaps for some and a bit breezier too. But in the south, well temperatures once again into the low to mid30s for some, particularly across the Midlands, central southern England and the southeast. And we could well be pushing 35° C in one or two spots once again. So exceptionally hot for May. But as I just mentioned, parts of North North Sea coastal regions, particularly northeast England, will see a much cooler day to come tomorrow compared to today.
Temperatures perhaps up to 10 degrees lower than on bank holiday Monday. So, a lot going on in the next few days and the weather is set to stay fairly warm and settled as we go through the rest of the week. Just one or two isolated showers around and if you're not a fan of the heat, well, it's good news because it won't be quite as hot in the south as we go from Wednesday onwards.
