Memory becomes self-serving over time. Not all distortions are fully deliberate in the moment. Over time, memory can shift in a way that supports emotional needs, reducing guilt, increasing justification, simplifying complex situations. The brain tends to preserve self-consistency, even when it means reshaping details.
