When heavy machinery cannot access soft, saturated ground, manual post pounding becomes the only viable method for fence installation, requiring significant physical effort and patience to complete sections that would otherwise be impossible to reach.

The Hard Way: Finishing the Fencing Without Machinery | We Got A New Bull!本站添加:
How many are you bringing?
>> I'm just bringing one ext. That's all I'm bringing.
Oh, Greg, you're on the big tree.
>> What?
Good.
>> Yeah.
Jesus.
We got to be able to get out, too, you know.
>> Wow. Whatever.
>> Why is it snowing?
>> I'm loving this, though.
>> Of course you are.
>> Oh, yeah. There.
Sit.
Power steering.
Everything looks good.
Cool.
>> There's the line.
I'm going to pop a Couple trees over.
>> Okay, >> we'll touch it again. But >> it's good firewood.
Heat. Heat.
Uh-huh.
So, it is pretty wet back here and we aren't able to get any of the machinery.
So, we've borrowed a huge manual postp pounder. The yellow one is ours that we use for the tost and stuff, but that's a big heavy one. So, it's going to be twoerson job. Hopefully I'm strong enough to help and to get this in.
Is it going in?
>> It is.
We should probably get one of these.
Just borrow this one. I don't want to buy one.
Well, I don't need this either.
>> Your bottom hand hurt?
>> You got to hold it like this.
>> I hold it up so that when it hits it, I don't >> Yeah. No, I'm not. I'm My arthritis does not like that. It's getting It's going in good, though.
We're going to call that good.
>> I don't want to do that manually.
>> For too long.
>> No, >> I got five of those in me.
>> I don't even But we got five.
>> Like, it's so rocky up there.
There's the owl.
All the other counts.
Let's Look, four Water up here.
Even if you get it in a couple inches.
I got it.
There we go. This is totally the cheating way doing this, eh? But I've seen other people down the road doing that have axes like this. I think I'm only getting one one twist and careful.
You're going to love this. I'm getting this in without you.
>> They hammered this wire into the wood.
>> I've noticed that.
There's something weird.
Is that going in?
All right, that should be all that we have to do with that big old pose pounder.
>> Thank the good Lord.
>> So glad that's over with. Um, we're going to get this stapled up and tightened over there and then we'll be done. Be able to move to the other side of the other wetland >> to the corner pin.
>> The home stretch.
>> Home.
All righty.
We always get into these modes where we look at a bit of this fencing and think, "Ah, we should be able to do that before lunch." Well, it is 4:30. We've been at it all day. But this is a long and complicated little bit of fencing that we got in here and it goes out to right there. So, that's all the work that we've done about 6 hours all the way up to the hump up there. That's hand p hand pounding those post in. How do you like that?
>> I don't like it.
>> I don't not doing that no more.
>> She's doing that more.
All right. So, we're heading up to that hill, but we've got to go out on our trail and around the wetland, cross over, and head all the way back on that old road. We're just going to get everything kind of prepped for tomorrow.
It's getting late in the day.
Um, and we'll figure out how many posts we need to get. We've got some left over here still, but we'll have to probably take the tractor down tonight, leave it by the post, and then when we come up in the morning, we can um just bring however many posts we need.
And we're on the home stretch of getting this side done, which is exciting.
Hopefully just a few more days work.
Hey, hey, hey.
silence only.
Promises, silence.
Show me the emptiness.
All right, we're wrapping up for the day. We were just walking the fence line to see kind of what we have to do tomorrow. And we heard wolves off in the distance. So, I don't know if we'll hear him again. I didn't have the camera on me to record it, but it sounded like there was a couple wolves howling to each other, which was pretty cool.
Didn't really expect to hear that. I thought it was a man hollering, but it wasn't. Once I heard the second uh howl, I was like, "Okay, those are wolves.
Don't eat my hair.
You're silly."
So yesterday we didn't actually film, but we got we're at the corner, the back corner, and we got this H post done. We did posts down there. I think we only had to do five or six. And then we did a handful of Tpost cuz a lot of the fence was good. We cleaned up that line. We've got to go back and tighten it. And there was a section we were going to do, I think, four wooden posts just because the excavator could get in there. So, we thought we would just try and get some solid posts in there. We went and did the posts all the way down. I think we've got six left to do, but it was getting late. The diesel was down here, the excavator's over there. So, we didn't want to have to mess around to to get the last few posts in the ground.
But, we're just here getting our supplies. And we're going to start putting the line up as we make our way back that way. So, we're on the home stretch getting close to having this side of the creek done. And I measured it out. It's 2.6 km once we have this side done out of about 4.9 km. So halfway when we have this part done I guess.
>> Don't do that.
>> We've got a nice gate here.
one of those things. We need to redo this H post. There's still tension in the in the wire. So, we're going to try and just squeeze a piece of wood in there.
Get it back in order.
You can set it right there.
Go like this.
Oh my gosh, tank top weather already.
So, a lot of people have been commenting on how far out the staples are from our gun and they're actually that way on purpose because we want the barbs to slide through. So, I'm going to have to loosen all of these ones that were already installed by someone else because the barbs will just get caught.
we won't be able to tighten past that section. So, yeah, we're doing that on purpose so that as it tightens, there's enough space for the barbs to squish in and pull through. And some of these have been driven home, so they're a real pain to get out.
Grab a nail.
You see the green on there? Those are the first signs of leaves.
Just thinking about it.
>> It's going to be good.
All right, north line is done.
>> The long line.
>> You're on the wrong side, Juniper.
All right, we've got a little section left to do on the east line, I think.
Whatever that direction is. Um, at the corner, we need probably four posts, which we don't have. We used the exact amount of post so far. We're totally out.
and and to tighten the east line where we cleaned it up yesterday. So, we're so close to being finished. I think we're going to have a little break and then come back and just finish it today.
>> Okay. This is the top line.
>> Okay.
All right, this last section is kind of difficult because there's no H post and the barb wire doesn't end anywhere. So, we've been doing kind of small sections that we tighten and then move on to the next short section, but this one goes all the way down. So, we're just going to try to tighten it the best we can.
And if we have to use the little tensioner tool thingies, we can do that later on.
But this line's probably going to be pretty hard and it's getting late in the day.
Good luck.
>> So, for people who don't understand, why are you putting a post next to a post?
>> That one's pretty wobbly.
>> Yeah, >> we've got some that are burnt in the ground.
>> Just some backup.
>> Yeah, even though this is probably going to pull it out of the ground.
>> Oh well, that's a problem for a different day. It's a problem for a different day. We're fixing today's problems.
So, we're done our day of work and we're walking and we're walking and there are so many widow makers. Look at this thing.
Look at this thing. What? How is that even holding on?
Anyway, we got to keep our eyes open for stuff like that.
So, I'm going to get I'm going to get get this right here.
Hi.
You okay, buddy?
Hi.
Hey buddy, look at that girls.
Yikes.
Oh my goodness.
>> Holy. Look at his dingle. Dingle dong.
Let's close this off.
Who's that?
>> Look how she's stretching out.
>> Oh, kissing him. I'm kissing you.
He's got his girls.
>> Got to go check it out.
>> Yeah, he's not being a little coward.
>> He's like, "Wait for me.
This is the house. This is the protein block." He's going straight for it.
They're so interested. He likes actually.
Yikes.
Whose little baby moos are those? It's >> the maples.
He's thirsty. I got to get him some water.
>> Can they even move properly?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Oh, caution.
>> Not sure about this thing. I don't see.
>> Got to go get him some water.
>> You coming here, Teddy?
Hey, >> it's good.
>> They're like, "Move, Maple."
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Look, I can do this. You see this? Look.
Hi buddy.
>> Hi buddy. Hi.
You girls happy?
Please be nice to me. Is he going to be mean, >> sweetheart?
>> I don't know. I'm kind of scared. I don't think you need to be scared of him.
>> Denny, do you love him?
>> Benny, he's not going to like you if you headbutt him.
>> He's got horns.
>> You might have to move the bucket from the fence.
>> Well, if he drinks it that way, I suppose.
>> Hi, What are these tiny little moos?
So, this is our new bull. His name is Teddy. He's a Highland cattle Highland bull. Um, he is really nice, really sweet. uh which we thought would be a good idea for our first bull. We really wanted to get a Galloway, like the black and white ones, but we couldn't really find one and Teddy came up and he was a great price. He wasn't too far away, so we decided to just jump on it and kind of throw ourselves in the deep end. He's not proven, but hopefully in the spring we will have some calves from him.
He's already very interested in the girls. So, I'm sure as soon as they are in season, uh, he'll be able to get the job done. So, hey, Teddy. Got four posts left and then we're going to be done on this side of the creek. Greg bought some more posts today. We're going to go drop off on the other side of the creek cuz that's where we actually need them. But, we are going to bring the world over here and just get it done. So, we got some weather coming in though, which really sucks. So, hopefully this doesn't take too long.
You're lucky. Look how far that slid from the truck. You're lucky you made it home.
>> I You knew it was sliding a little bit, but then I pulled over when I saw start started to see it.
>> Remember when you had all the plywood and you got home and you're like, "Hey, where's the plywood?"
It's on the road that >> I just want to race. Well, that was anticlimatic.
>> Better than I figured it would be.
>> And that's where it gets forgotten.
>> Okay. As far as you can throw it. One, two, three.
That'll be good.
down and we'll fill this in.
>> Well, just you're not throwing it at the same time as me.
>> Well, I I can throw it that way, but I don't want to do that. I'm trying to throw it flat.
>> Well, I'm aiming for the pile. So, aim for the pile.
>> If we fill this in, then God, you're not doing it, Katie.
>> You're not doing it.
>> No, we need to do this together.
>> I'm aiming for a spot.
>> If we don't if we don't keep this clean, it's going to just bounce everywhere.
There's a lot to come off of here.
>> Okay. Where?
>> We can do everything at the same time.
>> Well, where are you aiming for? You're trying to go for the back.
>> Yeah. Well, like >> cuz cuz like at this point, >> I can just do this.
knocking me over.
>> Oh, Greg, that's sketchy.
>> Okay, >> let's take the ones off the top and then I can just I can just bomb the rest out.
Watch out.
There you go, YouTube. Found our downfall.
Heat. Heat.
It's me, Greg. I'm just out here working on the line. My sweet dear Katie has a migraine. She tried to push through it. It was not happening. And this is kind of a momentous moment for us. This is the last line that I have to tighten before 180 acres are fully fenced from the creek all the way around to the creek. So, we've been working so freaking hard on this. And you guys know uh cuz we've been putting video after video after video on it.
We're going to take a little break after we're done. But after we're done today and we're going to do some other stuff, but uh I'm very excited. Oh man, I'm so ready for this.
I haven't hated this process at all. I love being in nature.
And if I don't care what I'm doing, I love being in nature. I love being with Katie. I love it when we work really well together, which we don't always do.
We just don't let you guys know that sometimes we're having a spat. We're real people. But for the most part, 90% 96% of the time, we're working great together.
And um Katie and I have done so good with this project so far getting tangled up in this barb wire and keeping patience. And um I'm really proud of her and I'm also really proud of her for uh being able to do this. Like this is not easy work.
This is 2.8 8 kilometer of fencing that we did this month. Now, some of it was up already. Um, but still like that's not a small feat. And we've been doing typically 10-hour days, sometimes more, sometimes less of just this over and over and over again.
And uh it's too bad that damn migraine got in the way cuz this would have been a nice thing to experience together. Though we are not done. This is halfway. But we're going to be taking a break because if we don't have start a garden, get a greenhouse going, we're not going to have our own vegetables. And this off-grid life is about self sustainability. And I mean, living off grid, if you don't grow your own food, what are you even doing?
So, we need to get our own food going.
We've got our beef growing. We got pigs lined up for the the year. We've got chickens lined up for the year as per usual. But, we need to get our garden going. And that's one thing we really miss about our last place, of course.
This is the last wire to tighten.
Oh, I'm ready for supper. We're eating steak tonight. And it's fitting cuz this is a big job and I'm ready for some meat.
Woo!
Done.
Heat. Heat.
