On May 27, 1942, British and Czech resistance operatives Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš attempted to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, the brutal Nazi Governor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, by ambushing his car in Prague; however, Gabčík's Sten gun jammed during the attack, forcing Kubiš to throw a bomb that severely wounded Heydrich, who died in hospital a week later, prompting Hitler to order the brutal Lidice massacre as revenge.
