Filming locations in independent cinema often serve as authentic backdrops that enhance the film's realism and cultural context. In the case of Clerks (1994), director Kevin Smith filmed at the actual Quick Stop Groceries convenience store in Leonardo, New Jersey, where he worked as a clerk, creating a genuine slice-of-life atmosphere. The film's black-and-white cinematography was not an artistic choice but a practical solution to budget constraints, as the Director of Photography explained that the fluorescent lighting would give everyone a green hue, and since Smith couldn't afford a lighting kit, shooting in black and white eliminated this issue. This demonstrates how independent filmmakers often make creative decisions based on practical limitations rather than purely artistic vision.

TO ALL MY VIEWERS AND SUBSCRIBERS…We Need To Have a Conversation About What Happened To Me
Added:I should say, I wasn't going to Okay, we're we're friends, right? You and I. Like, we can talk.
Right? We can talk. Like, intimate stuff. Okay? Let's do that.
Listen, sometimes you you got >> [groaning] >> I know you going to dig this.
>> [music] >> Huh.
Mhm.
>> What's going on, everybody? How you doing, sitting over in Leonardo, New Jersey?
Leonardo, New Jersey.
Little township right on the Jersey hits.
Near Red Bank, the Highlands. It's amazing. I've been here, I don't know, three, four, five times.
Even before I did YouTube. Uh Kevin Smith.
You're a fan of his movies, Clerks. I'm going to show you right here. Clerks 2, even. Clerks 3, even.
Clerks 3, especially. Well, Clerks 2 especially. Oh my god. Clerks I I Okay, I didn't want to get too into the weeds with this video cuz I've done a video here before. But, I was driving through, like, 15 minutes away. I was like, "Oh, I'm going to stop again and do a little quick video because I love this location.
And I love New Jersey.
I do.
I've had it with the tolls, the traffic.
Something else I've had it I've had it with when it comes to New Jersey. The pizza everywhere you turn.
So, it gets a little much. And the main thing I should say, I was I I going to Okay, we're we're friends, right? You and I. Like we can talk.
Right? We can talk. Like intimate stuff. Okay? Let's do it.
Listen, sometimes you you got to pee.
Like I drink a lot of coffee in the day.
So I had a large coffee and a small one at my hotel, then a large one. Then I had an energy shot cuz I get tired on the road.
So anyway, I did.
And then that opens up the floodgates and I got to pee.
You can't pee anywhere in New Jersey.
They don't let you pee anywhere. Boss, you can't pee anywhere. Like they don't let you.
Anywhere. You got to buy something or they just they say they don't have a restroom or it's not for I went to a bank to get some cash cuz I'm going to New York City and you need cash, you know, you can't bring your you know, mover and shaker.
The bank, they wouldn't allow me to pee.
I'm like, "I'm getting money out." I paid her for service, deep. I went to Okay, I went to a deli. They say you have to buy something. I was like, "My my cards are in my car." And they're like, "Well, go go get your card." I'm like, "Okay." And I went to a vape store.
They didn't have a restroom. I I didn't think they would, but still.
Uh What is it? A sub shop, they didn't have one. A Chinese restaurant, all in the same plaza.
And then I went to um a realtor, Janice was her name. She said, "I don't have a restroom here."
I'm like, "Janice, come on. You do. Where do you go?"
I could I could put her on blast cuz I know I remember the I remember Yeah, I remember I could find her.
And say, "Don't buy from Janice." But I'm not going to do that, Janice. But Janice, let people pee if they need to.
It takes 2 seconds. In Canada, we let you pee anywhere. If you If you go to a Canadian household, I'm from Canada. If you go If you go to Canadian house, uh if you go to a Canadian house, yeah, if you go to Canadian house, just knock on the door. Whoever answers will be like, "Hey, how you doing, eh?" And we'll be like You can say, "I I I really got to use the restroom. Can I your bathroom? Can I use your bathroom?" They'll would "Sure, come on in. You want to pop?" You know, like come on in. Oh, thank you. Thank you. So, uh which which way to the bathroom? Oh, just go anywhere. Uh we'll get it afterwards. We're that nice. It's so true about Canadians. We're that nice. We'll let you pee anywhere you want and we'll take care of it afterwards.
That's my guarantee as a Canadian. Don't go to my house and ask. But, you can't pee anywhere. So, now I'm thinking about the fact that I and I did I went to a Wawa. That's a gas station.
And I finally found one and they have really nice bathrooms. So, I peed there.
Ew, that's weird I'm saying that. But, now just talking about it makes me want to I feel like I have to again.
And I and I drove by two hospitals and I swear I'm not lying. I swear I thought I I'm going to stop at a hospital and go to the emergency room and it's like park in the emergency section and be like Michael Scott and throw my keys to the guy and be like when he's like, "You can't park here." I'll be like, "Keep it."
You know, I was going to like run in the emergency room and like pee and they've got to have a bathroom in there.
Or it's two of them I stopped. And they'd be like, "What what's your problem?" I'm like, "What's what's your what's wrong with you? Why are you sick are you sick?" Cuz you're in an emergency room. I'll be like, "Yeah, I've got um always got to I have it's a it's a real condition and it's Canadian. Look, don't look it up.
But, let me in." And they would. But, I didn't stop. I got to the Wawa. I peed.
Let people go to the Just you know, just let it happen. Look, so here So, Kevin Smith I love a lot of his movies. My favorite Kevin Smith movie is Size Clicks. It's actually Jersey Girl.
And I know a lot of people [ __ ] on that movie, but I think Jersey Girl is a great movie.
And um Jay and Silent Bob, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jay and Silent Bob the Reboot, uh Yoga Hosers, Tusk. I mean, there's a million. There's the 4:30 Movie.
Shout out my friend Jamie from Demanta Forever. I know she loves Kevin Smith.
But, right here is where they filmed it.
And that's that's And it's go across the street. So, back in the day >> That was built a few years ago. So, I think in the first Clerks that was not here.
>> Yeah, it wasn't. Well, obviously, that was 1990 whatever.
1995 1994 Uh it wasn't here.
I don't even remember if you see it in Clerks 3. Yeah, you do, I think.
But anyway, I want these cars to all move so I can get some good match-up shots. They're not moving.
But here it is. There's the Quick Stop.
>> So, if you've ever seen Clerks about two guys working in One guy works in there, the other guy works in there, which was a video store at the time. And um they uh it's a slice-of-life. It's a day in the life of guys working.
And it's shot in black and white cuz it was cheaper.
And it was made for like $27,000. Became a huge cult hit. Started Kevin Smith's career. Then he made, of course, Mallrats, which I've done the locations for that. Mallrats is great. Chasing Amy, I've done those locations are down in Red Bank.
There it is, right there.
So, that door Not that door. That door is where the video store was, which is pretty cool.
In the movie. Have I run out now? Is this it?
Um No, so they shot the whole movie in here. They played hockey on the roof, of course, in the movie. He worked here. Kevin Smith actually worked here.
So, he wrote a movie about being a clerk in a little uh grocery or convenience store.
And he shot it where he worked. And the reason why they shot it in black and white is his DOP said, "Well, the fluorescent lighting is going to give everybody a green hue." And he couldn't afford a lighting kit.
He couldn't afford a lighting kit. He just He maxed out his credit cards.
So, he thought, "Well, what if I shoot in black and white?" And he goes, "Well, then you got get The DOP said, "That gets rid of the green hue."" So, they got rid of the green hue by shooting them black and white.
A lot of people thought it was like an artistic choice. It was a financial choice.
Should we go in? Let's go in.
If you look here, I've got Randal right there.
And the famous I assure you we are open.
Quick Stop Groceries. There's Randal.
Small cast.
Very cool.
But yeah, I don't know what you can see in the video store anymore.
If you can, there's some Clerks stuff right there.
Here's this.
Jay and Silent Bob would stand right here. Now you can't even see inside anymore.
Used to be able to see right inside, but it's got a garbage bag over it.
I don't know what's going on there. See if They used to always let me film in here. Come a few times. I'm sure they will. Maybe. I don't know.
>> Well, the milkmaids.
>> The milkmaids?
>> The women that go through every gallon of milk looking for that later date as if somewhere beyond all the other gallons is a container of milk that won't go bad for like a decade.
>> Maybe just a group of customers.
>> Well, let's hear it.
>> Uh last time I was here, I got invited to a party.
I don't know if I told that story. That was like 3 or 4 years ago.
There was a young lady in there buying something.
and then a dude like a dude, he was a dude came I think I'm pretty sure he came from this way cuz I think I went out and back went back in and they started talking. She was really sweet. They were talking about a party.
And then they turned to me and asked me if I wanted to come to the party. It was around Yeah, it was around this corner.
I was like, "No, I'm good. I got to go somewhere." They're like, "Oh, okay, cool. Well, we're going to have a party." It was like 2:00 in the afternoon. I was like, "What kind of party is happening?" But, you know, they said, "You don't want to come to the party?" I was like, "Well, no, I don't."
But I I kind of now think maybe I should have.
Maybe it would have been cool.
Maybe the party would have been exactly what I needed.
And then I came back like I think I was I fell for a while.
The girl had come back again.
She was still here or something.
I don't know.
I told that story in a live chat once and I remembered everything that happened. Now I can't. I think it's cuz I have to pee again. So, yeah, there's the famous uh Clerk's store there, Quick Stop. So, I just want to make sure I don't get the kid in the video.
And right here let's see if I can get a good picture of the milk lady. That was Kevin Smith's mom trying to find the the expired milk like like the milk that hasn't expired the milk that's going to last the longest. So, she's taking all them out. I do that.
I think a lot of people do that.
But um James and Bob are standing right there. Let me see if I can get a good shot.
I know.
Yeah, they stood right to the uh right.
No, it's right here.
Right there.
I think it was a famous shot to like that way.
So, I went out like that way this way till the kid rolls away.
Here we go. Okay. So, I went like that way. Once these Oh gosh.
Once these kids took their bikes away to my right more kids are here. I'm going to give them the shot I want of the front. And here it is right here.
That's what I wanted. Let me make sure no cars come behind me.
So, the thing they wrote with shoe polish in the movie, I assure you we are open because kids stuck gum in the key.
Something like that. Yeah, I believe that's what it was. And they couldn't lift the the gate, so people kept coming in saying, "Are you open? Are you open?"
Cuz it So, finally he put a big like sheet and said, "I assure you we are open." Just watch the movie. I can't do my What's really cool is that sign is still the same sign. Now, I'm not sure if the Quick Stop part is. That's pretty new, but the metal holding it up, it's all the same from back in the day of 30 years ago.
And the milk fridges look the same to me, everything from the movie. I don't think they changed it much.
This guy is nice. He just smiled at me and gave me a peace sign cuz he knows is that, "Hey, it's from Wildwood. What's up, Wildwood?" I love Wildwood.
Yeah. Oh, this guy's leaving in his car.
Maybe I can get a better shot of the front of RST Video where uh Dante worked. See, they're going back and forth in the movie. And in Clerks 2, they're at the beginning Clerk it goes up in flames. And you got to watch Clerks 2. That was filmed in California.
But it's supposed to be here. And then at the end of Clerks 2, well, something happens with this place again. And Clerks 3 takes place all here again, mostly.
Very cool.
Love the movies. So, I did buy something. I bought Hostess coffee cakes, but Kevin Smith swears by Tastykake, which is another company. And I didn't buy any Tastykake. I've had I've had Tastykake uh stuff before. They are very good. There's no denying that.
But I wanted to buy something, so I was like, "Well, I like coffee and I like cake."
And I will eat this over the course of 3 days. I'll just like take little bits.
Yeah, then it gets stale.
But when you're an athlete, you have to you have to stick to a strict diet. Right? You got You got the twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley.
You know, so you can't eat too much cake, but you can drink a lot of coffee.
You just got to pee a lot.
>> [clears throat] >> He left.
Yeah, I think there's some shots that way from the mirror. I'm not going to look, but I think there's some shots that way.
Really cool. I love coming here. This is it, Jersey Shore. Here we are, Kevin Smith. Very, very cool.
Now, people are staring at me. Watch where you're going. Now he's leaving.
The car is leaving now, the truck. So I can get some good shots of the front of the store, the video store, where Jay and Silent Bob used to stand right here.
Perfect. Thank you for leaving.
I appreciate it.
There you go.
Right there.
So not much of a video. It's a video. I look, I did what I could. Um there's lots of uh I'll put some links below to my other Kevin Smith videos I've done. I've done quite a few. And I Oh, I did an interview once with um Jay, uh of Jay and Silent Bob, Jason Mewes. It's on my channel. Nobody watched it. I did it about two or three years ago. Uh we did it in Hollywood, just off of Highland. Sat at a picnic bench at like 11:00 in the morning. He came up to me in Hollywood uh on uh you know, not too far from Kurt's house, Kurt Cobain's house in Hollywood Hills. He started uh talking in the background of my video. So then we started talking. I said, "Hey, you should be on my channel sometime." He's like, "Yeah, sure." It was hell to get a hold of this guy. Hell. The nicest guy in the world, but once he agreed to be in my world, he's in it. So and he's like I mean it's probably by the end of it he's like, "What the [ __ ] did I agree to? Why did I say Why did I say I'd be in this guy's video?" Cuz I I kept up with it. I was like, "No, you said."
And then nobody watched it anyway. But, you know, what if you're stepping into my world, you just just remember I'm going to I'm going to harass until I get what I need.
Jay, I love you, buddy. He was awesome. The nicest dude in the world. Next up, Kevin Smith. Got to find that guy. All right.
Well, he's right here. Smodcastle. So, this is here.
That our oral artists use their mouth on you. What?
Okay. So, it's a podcast theater show schedule at smodcastles.com. Yeah, you can put on a kids party, yoga party. I don't know.
Very cool.
Love it. Love to see it.
Kevin Smith is one of the hardest working men in show business. He's got 18,000 podcasts going.
Movies, you name it.
Comic books. He's got his hands in everything. And he lives in Ben Affleck's old house over in Hollywood. That's cool.
Okay.
You know, him and Ben Affleck are really close, but they between the filming of what movies?
Jay and Silent Bob reboot. And didn't talk for like 10 years.
And then Ben Affleck came, then they got a hold of each other. And Ben Affleck was like, "Yeah, of course I'll do it."
It's It's a story I heard. I listened to.
But yeah, they're they're so close, but you know, life gets in the way. Some of my friends I haven't talked to in 10 years. I'm I'm fine with that. Don't text me. All right. Thanks for watching, everybody. I love you all. I'm just having fun. I'm not really that much of an [ __ ] I Sometimes I am though.
Especially if I got to pee.
I love you all. Thanks for watching.
Kevin Smith, you rule. All right. Shout out Jamie Coogan. I did that already.
Peace.
Out.
Slow down.
